oemera··on Now Chrome disables Quicktime plugin by default
Wait. Why is the user losing the most in such political desicisons? I can't believe that. I love the Chrome browser but that's to much. I mean come on QuickTime (on the Mac) is the least painful player.

In addition I have to say that I'm a MacBook Air user that means when I play flash content in the chrome browser my fan is freaking out. With QuickTime this doesnt happen and guess what I like more? Yes, playing videos without freaking out fans.

oemera··on AppCode: Objective-C IDE from JetBrains goes public
I never understood that. Is there a good reason why everyone have to download 4gb for each XCode and iOS SDK release?
oemera··on Georgify: Hacker News meets beautiful typography
This is awesome! Thank you

Is HN karma worth anything? Don't get me wrong. I love HN and I think it is unique in its way but I never thought that I could earn a medal because of a lot karma on HN.

I can understand this "function" on StackOverflow (even though I don't have much karma there either) cause karma at StackOverflow can bring in new chances.

My question: Do anyone use HN karma as measurement to see if this guy is worth to hire or worth for something else?

oemera··on Apple under fire for approving ‘gay cure’ app
So basically you want to say that we should fight against censoring BUT not against gay-hatred?

Man I can't believe your priorities.

First rule should ALWAYS be: human rights.

oemera··on Video of reactor 1 at Fukushima plant
Real quick, what does that mean for the rest of the world? Do we have to fear something?
oemera··on Twitter to developers: no new Twitter clients
I don't think that Twitter Inc. likes any 3rd party Twitter apps anymore cause these don't let them show their Dickbar and whatever will come to the official apps.

You know what I think? There is ONE solution to pass this problem: Integrate such things into the API so EVERY client has to show the Dickbar. This sounds like the logical next level.

As bad as it sounds I think they have some good points about that cause, you know, they want to make some money and integrate some annoying stuff to the official apps. 3rd party apps don't have these kind of annoying things and that means they don't earn a PENNY from those "assholes" BUT they are earning money from their apps which uses the Twitter API.

I know this sounds crazy but I think that's exactly what Twitter is thinking about. They want people to use their official Apps BUT if they use other Apps these MUST HAVE the Dickbar (or whatever) too so Twitter earns money.

Lets see in which direction this will go BUT I have to admit that this "letter" to developers is fucking sharp.

oemera··on IPhone Devs, don't put your private keys for push notification in your webroot
Wait. Does that mean I could send messages to all users using the app which is paired to this key? Hopefully no-one finds this out :/
oemera··on How to Get PayPal to Freeze Your Account in Four Easy Steps
Hey guys seriously is there any "real" alternative to pay pal? I'm getting sick about these stories.

To be honest my account got never frozen but I also never sold anything with Paypal. I don't want to support this insane service.

What about using Amazon payment? I payed once with Amazon on kickstarter and was surprised how smooth it was! Is Amazon a valid alternative?

oemera··on Xcode now costs US$ 4.99
JetBrains is working on an IDE for Cocoa developer and guess what it wont cost 5 bucks thats for sure.

http://www.jetbrains.com/cidr/

oemera··on Xcode now costs US$ 4.99
I think it sounds little sharp here BUT I have to admit I paid several bucks to save me from headaches at work. I bought software which made me a lot more productive and it sometimes cost me more than 60 bucks AND I'm really using those software at work not at home cause I don't need them at home.
oemera··on Xcode 4 released
There are free (Express) versions of Visual Studio but they lack those awesome Visual Studio Professional features AND Visual Studio Professional costs 1500 bucks.
oemera··on Xcode 4 released
Yeah sure free beats it. Most times. I mean sometimes people don't see the value when they are getting it for free. Example: Guy finds a bug in a free software and thinks 'what doesn't cost nothing can't be anything'. But these people are mostly end users not developers.

Long story short: I don't have a clue why Apple is selling XCode 4 BUT when I look at Microsoft you are getting a hell of a software for just 5 bucks. (Visual Studio costs 1500 bucks I think, to be fair there is also a Express (free) edition)

Anyway, I love the new XCode one window interface!

oemera··on Xcode 4 released
Wow! Apple is really doing some weird things lately. I don't like where this is heading. But when you think about the price and what you are getting it's unbeatable.
oemera··on Dirty Percent
What I do not understand is why no-one is complaining about Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 as a closed system but about Apples iOS line.

WHY is Apple bad for closing a system but Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are not? I really do not understand that.

WHY on earth has a cellphone to be open as a OpenSource project? Is there a reason for that? (Android has open sources but no-one can commit changes. It's all in Googles hands what comes into the next Android version which doesn't fit with OpenSource at all)

WHY is taking a 30% cut bad for all developers and Apps? (Jobs said that the 30% cut is not for SASS Apps but only for Newspaper Apps, right?)

Please give me some answers I'm starting to don't understand these discussions lately.

oemera··on How Germany Became the China of Europe
Thats true but Germany is still too expensive. While other countries are getting better at the quality point Germany doesn't get much cheaper for production. I think if these thinks don't change Germany will get into trouble.

(I'm from Germany)

oemera··on Minecraft creators’ next project is a strategy game: Scrolls
Thank you noting that because I was just like 'Wait. How will they manage another game when Minecraft is still in Alpha stadium?'
oemera··on The Android Developers Union
Oh come on guys! I thought HN is better then saying 'If you don't like it then don't use it'. Do you really think that this has any value? I don't want to be harsh but since when is this constructive criticism?

If you don't like this post please say WHY you don't like it and give some feedback HOW it would be better.

And now some Feedback to this website. I think it's fair to mention that Developers have to pay 30% of their earnings and getting nearly nothing for it. I mean I'm thanking Google that they are hosting the Android Market but taking 30% for just hosting something isn't fair anyway. They should lower the rate or give some more support to developers.

I really welcome criticism to any platform cause you can grow with it BUT without it you don't know what you are doing wrong, right?

To be honest I'm mostly an iOS developer but I developed already a Android App and successfully put into the Android Market for free.

oemera··on IPhone Needs a New Home
Oh didn't know that. Thanks!
oemera··on IPhone Needs a New Home
I hate to be that guy but PLEASE spell it right! It's not an IPhone it's an iPhone.

This is not unimportant cause Apple wont let your into the App Store before you spell it right (at least in the App).

oemera··on Designers, how do we get you guys to contribute to open source projects?
Git was developed for improving Linux Kernel development. You see why they don't care about Windows, right?
oemera··on Why We Stick With PHP (and don't move to Ruby or Python)
To be honest in most of these mentioned languages you can reach the same goal. There is nothing you can't do with a language which can't be done in the other from the end user perspective.

But I have the odd feeling that while it is good to stick to a language (for strategic reasons) it is bad for improving code, getting better at what you are doing from a developer perspective. If I hadn't learned Python and wrote something in Python I would never be the same developer as I'm now.

When you look at for example Ruby and Rails there are so much better things you can do in the testing area. Ever used RSpec and Cucumber? You should know what I talking about. This is awesome stuff and it will let you develop a quality web app in days which is also fully tested.

What I'm trying to say is that YOU HAVE TO stay hungry as a developer about what is next BUT you should carefully choose what to you use in business. Looking at the same stuff (PHP) and going only to PHP conferences and hanging around only with PHP developer won't help you to get a better developer in the overall perspective.

Last but not least I want you to read Paul Graham's essays about Python people and why you will get better Python developer than any other:

oemera··on The Boy Who Stole Half-Life 2
What I learned from this is: Never trust any of your friends or family when you have such important things in your hands.

You know in everyone of us is this little devil and if you have something which is important you can earn something with it (money or even credit in the community) there is a good chance that people will go the devil way.

I even would consider saying I even DON'T trust myself on such important and valued things!

oemera··on The Boy Who Stole Half-Life 2
I know he was young and didn't think about it but what he should have done is get into Valve network, watch it for 2 weeks, copy some source code to proof it AND after that say:

"Hey Gabe, you know what I love Valve and I love all of you guys. You are all my biggest heroes BUT you know your security systems aren't good. I hacked your system and it was quite easy. For two weeks no-one even noticed it. I DIDN'T steal anything but if you give me a job I will do my best to pretend such security issues and make your system as secure as I can. Would consider giving me a job?

I attached some source code of Half-Life 2 to proof my abilities.

I hope you all best and hope to hear from you back.

Thanks"

I really think that this would bring in the job.

oemera··on What Toy Apps would you write in order to learn a language?
Amazing. I would love to do that too but first of all I need to know how to write snake in a language I already know.

I will try that out in Python and let you know how it is going :D

oemera··on Don't waste your time by cd-ing in the terminal
Thank you for this awesome little script. However I found out that bashmarks doesn't work with folders which have whitespaces in the name.

For example:

  cd /Users/username/Library/Application\ Support
  s app_support
works great but if you do this it won't work:

  g app_support
I opened an issue on GitHub and after that I tried to fix it on my own. I never wrote a bash script and I'm really proud to have fixed this problem on my own.

Here are changes I made:

  # save current directory to bookmarks
  touch ~/.sdirs
  function s {
     cat ~/.sdirs | grep -v "export DIR_$1=" > ~/.sdirs1
     mv ~/.sdirs1 ~/.sdirs

     escaped_path=${PWD/ /\\ }
     echo "export DIR_$1=$escaped_path" >> ~/.sdirs
  }

  # jump to bookmark
  function g {
     source ~/.sdirs
     path=$(eval $(echo echo $(echo \$DIR_$1)))

     # replace whitespaces with "\ " for escaping
     escaped_path=${path/ /\\ }
     cd_eval="cd $escaped_path"

     eval $cd_eval
  }
Hope this helps you guys like it helped me. And if there is a way to do this in an more elegant way, please let me know. This would help me to improve my none existing bash skills :D

Edit: I opened up a fork and commited all my changes to this repo. I also opened a pull request and I hope my fix will get accepted.

GitHub fork: https://github.com/Oemera/bashmarks

Thanks

oemera··on IPhone Revenue Statistics
I really don't get those numbers. Can someone please explain them?

What does it mean?

How much money did he make by the end of a month?

oemera··on Tell HN: Rejected from App Store - "customer damaging their iPhone."
Hey I really don't know you and I don't want to be personal but it's ideas like this that make me happy that Apple is taking care what comes to the App Store and what not.

You know I really don't understand how someone could enjoy a game which encourages people to throw a 600 dollar device onto a "soft" surface. You how this ends right? Kids want to play this and they will throw the from EVERYWHERE and BOOM you have to buy another 600 dollar phone.

You want to make money? Write something useful.

However I really like that you put the source code on GitHub.

oemera··on World's first hack-free software developed
Are they serious? Is this serious? Is such a think like developing "unhackable" software or hardware even possible? I don't think so.
oemera··on The Next Big Language
I'm really asking myself when ECMA Script will take over the world. Everyone is talking about that it will be the NBL. It's not that I don't like ECMA Script but there is a shit lot to do to implement all those language features into ECMA Script.

All those stuff and sure much more have to be done:

- performance of eval() (yes, I even don't know if this is ever possible)

- tools (great-eclipse-visual-studio-like IDE)

- Destructuring bind (e.g. x, y = returnTwoValues())

- Standard OOP with classes, instances, interfaces, polymorphism, etc.

- Visibility quantifiers (public/private/protected)

- Iterators and generators

- Namespaces and packages

- Operator overloading

- Static typing and duck typing

- Solid string and collection libraries

Does anyone know if ECMA Script is going to implement half of the stuff?
