oemera··on Pirate Party Germany gets into the parliament for the state of Berlin
Freedom of Expression is one thing but lying and denying a horrific fact is another. Are you saying that it is ok to denying the holocaust in Germany only cause every one should freedom of expression? I'm no friend of censorship but this has nothing to do with censoring this is just to protect the truth and the history. Such an horrific event shouldn't be forgotten neither should it be "over simplified to show it as it was ok cause there was no holocaust at all"! If you think this kind of stuff is ok then you should really really overthink what you are doing there. I would like to see how you want to explain the families who lost members in the holocaust this "freedom of expression" statement!
oemera··on Pirate Party Germany gets into the parliament for the state of Berlin
Even if it would be just A SINGLE PERSON who is denying the holocaust we should fought it. But I see that some people want to have better internet rights and willing to forget the most tragic event in the human history.

You can down vote me as much as you like but I will never give my vote to a party who has member who are just lying like that.

AND YEAH he is still active in the Piraten party. Source from december 2010: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js...

Here you have an other one from Bodo Thiesen, who is still active in the Pirate Party:

oemera··on Pirate Party Germany gets into the parliament for the state of Berlin
I'm little confused that this is a popular news at HN. They fight for Internet stuff but they also deny that there was an Holocaust in Germany.

For me this is pretty bad news to hear that they will get into the parliament.

oemera··on Ultrabook: Intel's $300 million plan to beat Apple at its own game
That's not true! When Vista came out the 15" MacBook Pro was the machine which had the best performance in Vista. Think a bit about that.

Installing Lion on a non Apple Mac is illegal and that's why it is so hard to do. Windows is not and should run smoothly like on every other machine.

oemera··on Report: Apple Loses iPhone 5 Prototype. Yes, in a Bar.
If this is true I pretty sure that the iPhone 5 is really a improvement to the iPhone 4. If it would look like a new iPhone model no-one would sell it for 200 bucks. Seems that Apple is doing a great job hiding the lost phone.
oemera··on The Patent Pledge
Great idea pg but what exactly does it fix? After you have 26 employees they will take you down like before the pledge. What can a company with 26 employees do against a arsenal of lawyers and patents? Do you think after having 26 employees you should have enough money to counter the attack?
oemera··on Why must you laugh at my back end?
I'm little late here but I can't stop but write my response to this.

I know the problem to laugh about code, backend or infrastructure. I know a lot of people are opinionated and if they don't like something you can't stop them firing on you. I'm very happy for you that you found a stack which works for you HOWEVER this doesn't mean that it works for others. A lot of programming languages, paradigms, frameworks and infrastructures just work for one guy on his greenfield project but while getting bigger things get lot harder and crappy cause it isn't modular enough or no-one understands "the legacy code" ect.

At beginning it seems like you can't run into such problems but after a couple months of development this happens nearly in every project. You learning from these mistakes and get better with every project. There are a lot of things in software development people are talking about but you can only truly understand it when you came to the point where you have this problem people are describing to fix.

For example a lot of my old colleagues are in love with PHP. They get stuff done with it and somehow they get code shipped but they don't go for elegance and having less code smells. They just go for "it works what you want more?". Software development is not only "it works" it is far more than that! Maintainable code, readable code, performance, architecture, elegance (for example: less readable code which covers the same as before) you name it.

I found my self learning a lot from different languages, paradigms, people and different systems. For example what I love about linux is: I could write a automatic shell script to do anything. With Windows you can't! You just can't write for every step a shell script a lot of things are only available through the GUI. This bad. I don't like that. And I also don't like to run the GUI on a server. You are wasting a lot of resources here.

oemera··on Microsoft UI has officially entered the realm of self-parody
You sure are a "Mac power user" who just don't have a clue what the menu bar in OS X is for and for it... Apple is crap and theire products are overpriced and the OS is a piece of crap too because you can't figure how to use it. Are kidding me? I bet that you only once used Mac OS X in an Apple Store for 1 minute.

I understand that a lot Microsoft people don't like Apple and Mac OS X but to say to be an power user of both systems and only use the terminal in OS X cause it is too complicated is little bit too much of it, isn't it? I can tell you the exact difference: I used office 2003 for a very long time and since we at work switched to 2007 I can't find anything. Ribbons everywhere but not one Ribbon is self explaining. Not even ONE. Sure you get used to it and after a lot wasted time you know where those things are now BUT getting used to it doesn't speak for a great UI design!

But maybe the complicated stuff fits you better but I doubt such thing!

oemera··on [dead]
Yeah Microsoft definitely revolutionized graphical interfaces... Come on! Microsoft never revolutionized anything!
oemera··on [dead]
Oh come on! "Zappos did change how we buy shoes, so what?" really? No it didn't. Maybe for you in the USA but in Europe it didn't. But the iPod and iTunes store changed how we buy music in the whole world. See the difference? Changing something in the whole world is a way bigger challenge than just establishing a new shop with convenient shopping methods in the USA.

I'm sorry if this sounds like fanboism but you shouldn't underestimate the change and the hard work here. Apple is the most innovative company in the world and so it should get credit for that. Even if you don't buy Apple products you should be happy that Apple is pushing the bars for simplicity and innovative products!

oemera··on A letter from _why
Yeah can imagine there are jobs where it is required to stay "hidden". I think it is very interesting cause most times you can make a name in communities when good and at the same time popular people from the community are working for your company.

On the other side there are plenty of people who did or still do a lot to be popular in the community.

Last but not least I think the guy has earned some rest.

oemera··on A letter from _why
Thanks for this. I can understand that people want to get out of the light because not everybody can take that.
oemera··on A letter from _why
I don't know much about _why but as I read all the stories about his disappearing I can't help but think he had serious problems in his life. To take it personally and go away only because your code is getting old and slow while other learned from it and wrote something better is IMO wrong! You should also learn from libraries and go on write something new and challenge yourself again. Giving up because of a loses match is just not ok.

I also find it pretty odd that no-one seems to know what he is doing now. What about all of his friends? Do they also don't where he is? But I think if someone puts so much energy in hidden himself he shouldn't be found anyway.

oemera··on Balls
First of all sorry I wasn't aware that this has been stated a lot here.

I'm not sure if Google is really the hero at this point like other commenters are stating here. Maybe they bought 3 times more patents than MS/Apple but it's not clear to me if all of those are really interesting in this fight.

I have to admit that I just don't like the Google way here. Saying that patent system sucks and and patents are bad but buying more and more patents is just silly don't you think? Plus they said that Nortels weren't worth 4 billion but they bought 3x patents for 12,5 billion. It's just the same ratio isn't it?.

Let's just see how this will end.

oemera··on Balls
No it's not! Google wanted those patents "to save Android from the competitors" and when didn't get them they just said: "Nah, we didn't want them anyway". Are you kidding me? Who on earth would bid such an amount if they didn't want those patents.

Also no-one wrote a article about the patents beside Google itself. The ones who didn't get shit.

Sorry but if this aren't sour grapes I don't know what is.

Edit: I forgot to mention that Microsoft wanted to gang with Google in the first place but after Google lost they said "they ganged against us". It's just ridiculous.

oemera··on Next-Gen Web Apps: Google unleashes Native Client into Chrome
I hope this trend will stop this instant. Why should we develop a Chrome App which only runs in Chrome (cross platform though) ? With existing technologies you can target way more people with all kind of browsers. (Ok there are browsers which are hard to optimize for)

I feel like we are going back from all these benefits the browserS gave us.

oemera··on Iron Man-Like Exoskeleton Nears Production
It would be a shame if these would be only used for combat and war. Imagine how cool it would be for hard jobs like builders or miners. But I guess in war and combat is way more money than in those hard jobs.
oemera··on The Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader is live
I'm from Germany and I have heard from people who have registered their account with a address in the united states and a valid credit card which is also registered to a guy living in the united states. If you can do this you can buy from the american kindle store and you are paying for the same books less money than european customers.

I hope they will get this right without a hack in the future.

oemera··on Poll: What should be done about the endless repetition of stories?
What about listing the story with the up votes and merging all the other stories about the same thing under the first one. I think it would be good like Google did it with discussion. If googles finds a page which seems to be a discussion, you can click the plus icon and all the other related results are getting listed.

What do you think about that? I think it would prevent that other topics are getting to the second page.

oemera··on WebAppKit - create web applications using Cocoa
My question would be: Can those web applications can only run on Safari with Mac OS X? If yes: Isn't this contrary to what a Browser wants to do? To Run Web Apps in any Browser.

If it cross compiles down to html/js/css it's just fine but the Readme isn't giving much information.

oemera··on Why I get my entertainment via BitTorrent
Wait. This is YCombinator right? Why on earth does no-one create a startup to make buying digital copies easier wherever you live? Why is that so hard?
oemera··on The Final Answer For What To Do To Prevent Piracy [of Indie Games]
Anyone knows Company of Heroes? It's not an indie game but a game from THQ. The developers decided that adding mechanism to it to prevent piracy is wasted money. And they were right because everybody I know bought it and the is/was a huge success.

Mechanism to prevent piracy are so expensive that it is not worth the money. Plus in the and the game will get cracked anyway and that means all the money you put into it was just useful for a short time.

Another thing about preventing piracy methods is that in most cases the paying customer are losing. I buy a game for 50 bucks from Capcom and can't play it cause they wanted to prevent piracy with a phone-home DRM. This is ridiculous.

oemera··on Ask HN: Version control for PHP?
Git. Although I don't know how it performs on windows. OS X and Linux is just fine.

To give you a better answer please provide information about version control knowledge, such as "Did you ever use a VCS?", "What did you use before?".

oemera··on Vico Editor (Mac text editor)
While you are right at some point I don't think that it would all good if people would stop creating better software.

It's what makes the human being stupid and at the same time a genius: Always trying to make something better (even if you know you can't). Otherwise we wouldn't have lower consumption cars, color TVs and so on, right?

oemera··on Vico Editor (Mac text editor)
No-one can tell you if vim is better for you or not. Both editors are kinda religious choices.

I like vim but if you are emacs user and are happy. Why would you want to switch?

oemera··on MacBook Air is enough for a work machine
You might be right and maybe a MBP just fits your needs even better than a MBA could. I just wanted to demonstrate that a MBA is pretty good for development too.
oemera··on MacBook Air is enough for a work machine
I think I'm really late into this and nobody will read my comment but I will give it a try.

Six months ago I had a iMac 24" and a MacBook Pro 13" for studying and portability. I noticed after I bought my MBP that I didn't use my iMac as I thought to be using. Not because it was slow or bad or something. No it was just horrible to synchronize both devices with my work and study related stuff (Yeah I know now better that it is a charm with Dropbox).

While I was deciding if I should sell my iMac I decided to sell both iMac AND my MBP. Why, you ask? My MBP was just fine but sometimes I had to carry a heavy books plus MBP with me and this was why my back was hurting. So I decided to switch to something lighter and faster (and yes my MBA is way faster than my MBP ever was).

After selling both devices I bought a MBA with 128GB SSD and 4GB Ram and happier than ever before. This was one of the best decisions I made in my environment. And if anything happens to my MBA I will order a new one with thinking a moment about it.

Pro's:

* It is very fast,

* it is light as nothing else,

* I have instant-on (something which is really important to me),

* I have 5-6 hours of battery life,

* Eclipse runs really really smooth,

* XCode runs even smother,

* and every other development related works just fine (and sometimes I think even better as on my MBP)

Con's:

* No glass display (I loved it cause it was way easier to clean than a "plastic" display)

* No keyboard backlight (while this was bothering me at the very beginning, I have to admit that I don't care anymore)

At the bottom-line I want to say that unless you are working on really high computation stuff (like 3D rendering or something) a MBA will do it smoothly. I never encountered anything which I had performance problems with. (If you ask me I would wait a second longer in exchange to carry much less weight with me)

Disclaimer: I don't play any games and try to escape Flash everywhere possible (cause it lets the fan freak out).

oemera··on Steve Jobs Responds to iOS Location-Tracking Controversy
I don't know what Apple has but people and the media are making out of _everything_ a big thing when it has something to do with Apple.

Stop it.

oemera··on Ask HN: Why can't I make as much as I make?
While I agree with you that not everyone can make a billion dollar business I can't help but think that there ARE people they did it. That other people already did it doesn't mean that you will do it the same way. These thinks require a lot of luck and much more hard work.

BUT what I want to say is non of these people made a billion dollar business because they want to make billion dollar business. No, they did it because they found finally something they thought people on earth do need. Some of them were wrong (like most of the weekend projects on HN will die because of monthly costs ect.) but a few of them were right and did it.

If you want to play this coke game then you should it and you should do it with a fun project, with a project you think the world needs, with a project you would love and whole bunch people too.

BUT make sure that you know that you don't have to play this game. There is also a way to make great money (not billions tough). If you want to go into the million dollar business you could dig into cooperate e-business stuff. These may not be fun and you can't program in Haskell but if do it big you will get your money. There is a lot of room for smart people you just need to say what they want you to say and make them happy. This will let you make so much money you wouldn't have thought about.

Just find out what you want.
