odshoifsdhfs··on Apple Maps Gradually Winning over Google Maps Users, Report Suggests
I'm using the iOS 17 beta so not sure if it is only on 17 or works on 16 also, but you can download parts of the map on the Apple Maps app now
odshoifsdhfs··on Leveling up in job interviews for software engineers (2022)
Is this a US/SV thing? I hear it here over and over but in 20+ years of professional development (Europe + US/Canada remote start ups) never I needed more than a week to start working on a system (usually is 1-2 days that are mixed with onboarding sessions as well).

I may not be able to refactor the system to use micro services or whatnot, but to dig into the code and start fixing some bugs or even add a small feature has always been a week 1 goal for me (and one I set to the people I manage now).

odshoifsdhfs··on Tell HN: Interview take home assessments without feedback are frustrating
I had the same experience with DDG, but I will say I did get paid the 300 dollars or so (by PayPal) they promised.
odshoifsdhfs··on The D.E.N.N.I.S. system: Résumé tips for Senior Devs
I didn't read the article (so hopefully you aren't advocating something nasty), but will give you a piece of advice I have read somewhere a long time ago which is attributed to Bill Cosby (I know!) and has helped me immensely.

`I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.`

So write with your own voice. Maybe you will rub some people the wrong way, but that is the path you should follow to resonate with your target audience.

odshoifsdhfs··on Tesla's next-gen electric motors will get rid of rare earth elements
Where in Europe, because outside Norway Tesla's don't dominate at all. [1] They had around 15% market share and the last few months that dropped.

Maybe because in Europe you have other auto makers that make electric and non electric versions of the same car so you just assume they aren't EV? The Hyundai Kona is basically the same outside except for the front grille and no exhaust. Unless you know that, you don't really know the difference. I would say (in Portugal) on my daily drives I identify around 6/7 Evs for every Tesla. And as I said, I probably missed some as I can't distinguish them

odshoifsdhfs··on TensorFlow for Python is dying?
Try fast.ai (https://http://fast.ai)

They have a course that goes exactly like that (Practical Machine Learning or similar). You start high level with libraries and just a few lines of code, and gives you the high level tools to use ML in your projects, and sometimes goes a bit lower level when needed.

odshoifsdhfs··on Request for Startups: Climate Tech

odshoifsdhfs··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
It could even be a fucking pet monkey, he still didn't start it.

And that is the fucking problem. More and more shit if coming up about him (latests I saw today was an 'expose' about his degree and maybe even being illegally in the country, which I don't know if it is true or not) but people seem to believe whatever shit comes out of his mouth over facts. Was he pard of the success in Tesla, yes. Was he a founder/started it? Absolutely fucking not. Was Tesla be able to succeed without the government tax credits/investments, absolutely fucking not. But now that it is in a good path, he even moved state to avoid that 'government' issues. He is a fucking liar and a psychopath, but because he has money, people keep gargling his balls like they taste like candy mixed with wild truffles.

(no clue for SpaceX as I truly don't know).

odshoifsdhfs··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
"I will call 911 right now as a stranger is trying to abduct my son" should be the correct response.

Not a jab at you, but so tired of random people thinking they know what is best for my son from a 3 second interaction. We really need to bring back some shaming as I truly believe that is how you get a community to work together again instead of against each other.

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: Is long-term employee commitment to the same company still appreciated?
Do you also give 40-50% raises to your employees every 2 years?

Everyone knows that you can and get those pay bumps if you switch jobs, but want to penalise it.

I will say this differently, if you see short stints as a bad thing, there are two options:

1) you want to explore people that have difficulties negotiating/interviewing

2) you will hire dumb people (because unless you are curing cancer, anyone that rejects 20-50% pay bumps every couple years is just dumb)

odshoifsdhfs··on Anti-Xi protest spreads in China, worldwide as Chinese leader begins third term
I'm not American, but it isn't only America that has this distrust/hate.

China's government isn't compatible with (what we think) western democracy. Just this week a video was released (Manchester I think?) of China's Embassy guards trying to drag protestors inside the embassy while exerting violence (which they have no mandate to do) and if not for a British cop, the protestor would faced a worse fate.

There is documented instances of Chinese 'police stations' in various capital cities that exert pressure/violence in these cities at the whim of the ccp.

Industrial espionage is reported and just about expected from the Chinese companies/ccp here in Europe.

Pressure on politicians, public institutions, professors, etc for saying something that is sensitive to the ccp/Xi.

And these are just in our European soil (among many other things). If we go on about how China deals with Tibet/Taiwan, muslims, zero covid, etc etc, it is just a style of government that is in direct opposition with what we expect, and the fact they try to make us bend the knee of them, makes a lot of people not like any kind of Chinese influence in their turf.

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: How to learn to sell?
I think he meant 'knock on the back door (or just walk in through the main entrance)' and not to just walk in through the back door
odshoifsdhfs··on The gangs that kidnap Asians and force them to commit cyberfraud
It isn't just the economist that does that. My small European country loved to rail on Trump, so usually bad news were 'Trump's government did X' and good ones were 'America government did Y'. I then checked and BBC, CNN and others had the exact same bias when reporting.

(not following now as covid lockdown ended and I stopped reading/listening to the news so much, so not sure if it still applied with Biden)

odshoifsdhfs··on Cost of public EV charging rises by more than 42% in four months
(not an attack) I would suggest you check how you are driving and maybe try to drive in a more conservative manner (of course terrain/traffic may be the culprit). My recent car usages:

- 2007 Honda Civic (gasoline): 5.9L/100

- 2015 Mazda CX-5 (diesel): 5.6L/100

- 2017 Porche Cayenne S (gasoline): 7.9L/100

- 2017 Lexus IS300h (gasoline + hybrid): 4.9L/100

(Can't remember my older cars consumptions but even those never more than 6L/100)

For reference, I now drive a 2021 Hyundai Kona/Kauai EV. My average is 12kwh/100, though I'm still getting the hang of driving it more efficiently so I'm confident I may get it a bit lower.

odshoifsdhfs··on Downturn career decisions
If the expectation is 'the best work of your life' shouldn't compensation follow? Fair pay gets you fair work, not the best. 'Best compensation of your life' gives you 'the best work of your life', anything below that gives you just that, fair work
odshoifsdhfs··on The Portuguese can no longer afford to live in Portugal
Portugal government really likes centralisation, including closing better performant offices/institutes elsewhere and moving them to Lisbon (and to a smaller extent Porto). This brings whole industries after that require a close connection to these centers.

There is a reason anyone outside Porto/Lisbon here complains that Portugal is only Lisbon/Porto, the rest is scenery. Which to be honest, if we look at the investments made throughout the country, it is quite accurate.

odshoifsdhfs··on The Portuguese can no longer afford to live in Portugal
It was declared on his 'declaration of interests' or whatever it is called. Was also published in Eco and Publico (at least saw in these two).

And from what I remember, a lot of the politicians in the Parliament also have multiple properties, and lets not even remember the 'Rubles' case.

odshoifsdhfs··on U.S. life expectancy drops sharply, the second consecutive decline
As with all guidelines, this always depends on the starting point and personal data.

If you are on the heavier side and a heavy drinker and carb eater, going low carb/no alcohol you will lose easily 10 kilos in a month (mostly being water weight).

If you are a healthy weight and eating normally with a glass of wine here and there, 0.5-1kg is probably a good range (and probably around 70% of it being fat loss)

If you are lean, 0.25-0.5kg a week is a good goal (and probably 50% will be fat).

odshoifsdhfs··on U.S. life expectancy drops sharply, the second consecutive decline
Not really and this is the problem.

My quality of life decreased after my booster shot. Had severe reaction and my athletic performance dropped quite a bit afterwards never going back to the baseline pre-vaccine. Also having more heart palpitations and a decrease on VO2max.

But apparently when I talk about this, I am either labelled anti-vaxx (even though I got the damn vaccine), a conspiracy crazy or people try to justify my issues with something else that magically coincided with the date I took the booster.

odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: Anyone having issues with job applicant fraud?
Maybe if companies haven't been fucking over people, colluding to keep wages low, offshoring, unpaid overtime, layoffs to protect investors and not employees, etc etc, maybe, just maybe I would feel like I should be honest/hard working. But since in 20+ years the amount of shit I've seen companies do to their employees, I seriously don't care anymore.

And guess what, when I decided to be an asshole, think only of myself and not give a fuck about the companies, voila, my renumeration started to go up and up and up (making 10x more now than when I was a 'company man').

Stop being an idiot (not parent, in general) and start looking for yourself only, in a few years you will see the rewards.

odshoifsdhfs··on The rise of workplace surveillance [audio]
It is your problem no? If someone takes 2-3 jobs BUT still producing enough, what does it matter? If a company has a problem with it and punishes everyone, again, it is a 'you' problem.

If I am laid off (company doesn't give a shit about me), will you give me part of your salary? No right? So why the f should I care if my actions (assuming they are legal) affect you? 2 salaries? Yay, I will get to retirement in half (or less even) time. Have a problem? Well change companies or do it the same. If your company punishes everyone for a couple individual actions, they don't know how to manage people or even who is working two jobs, just a suspicion. Change jobs, but let the people that can and prefer to work 2/3 jobs, finally had an opportunity to get ahead alone. It is your problem, not theirs

odshoifsdhfs··on German digital signage ban prompts confusion
Among the EU, germans drive more km per car than anyone else except Austria (data from 2000, can't find newer).

Among the EU, Germans rank 6th on car ownership per capita (2020 data).

Going these together, and it shows within the EU, Germans are the on the top of km per capita and not 'we drive less than others' (except maybe the US)

Your reply to someone asking about charging their EV(thus need to drive) was that in Germany that isn't a problem because there you eat healthy and cycle, which is a lie (you drive more than most/all of the EU). (as per cycling data, DE is 7th on daily usage of bikes in the EU, but couldn't find any data regarding number of kilometres though)

odshoifsdhfs··on German digital signage ban prompts confusion
It isn't about the absolute numbers (even though they aren't 'good' for Germany specially if you remove micro/extreme poor states), is the 'holier than thou' attitude from Germans. It's like an obese person going to the morbidly obese: 'here we don't stuff our mouths with food like you' while having no sense that they are just in a slightly better state than the ones they are chastising.
odshoifsdhfs··on German digital signage ban prompts confusion
With number 25 on cars per capita in the world and one of the biggest car industries and also obesity rates above average than EU.

'eat healthy and ride your bike' my ass

odshoifsdhfs··on What alcohol does to your body, brain and health [video]
Thanks, unfortunately, same issue as other good brands, they are British and after Brexit they don't ship easily to EU :(
odshoifsdhfs··on What alcohol does to your body, brain and health [video]
Can you recommend some (non-weirs) in Europe? I used to buy some from the UK but after Brexit they stopped shipping to the EU and all the ones I find have this 'non-alcoholic flavour' that I can't pinpoint but ruins the experience to me. That or they are somewhat sweet, which I Hate.

Aldi brand non alcoholic ones are actually ok, and can hit the spot, but wouldn't call them 'good!

And forget about non-alcoholic wine, that shit is awful.

Being buying low alcoholic gin (Beefeater 20%) and whiskey (Ballantines 20%). They are ok. Not perfect, but they have enough 'zing' to make them pleasant.

odshoifsdhfs··on Euro falls below parity with the dollar
Thank you, we appreciate it. Specially when just a few weeks ago Central Europe wanted the south to be solitary with the rest of Europe and save gas, gas they don't get from Russia and always paid more for.

This is why the EU is a stupid idea. When it is the south, they should suffer, when it is Central Europe, everyone should come together and sing kumbaya

odshoifsdhfs··on Apple’s Use of AppKit, Mac Catalyst and SwiftUI in macOS
Did you find out what was causing it? I have developed 'heavier' (aka 50k lines of code) applications in SwiftUI on mac and it mostly sits idle (0-1% cpu based if it is doing some regular background stuff). Heck, I just created a quick Charts based app from an online example on Mac and stays at 0,0%.

Is it possible it is re-rendering the view hierarchy due to some data invalidation you haven't noticed?

odshoifsdhfs··on California DMV accuses Tesla of falsely advertising Autopilot and FSD features
I just ordered the Kona EV (expecting delivery next week). What are your thoughts on it?

As for the 'security' features you mentioned, my 2015 Mazda CX-5 did the same (just not sure about the weather as I don't remember driving it in very bad weather except for a snow trip but I didn't put any of those things on). Couple seconds no pressure, beep. A few more and disabled lane assist. It also warned me of driving fatigue by analysing my driving and other stuff. I always felt it was helping me by making me a 'better driver' and not actually trying to control the car.

odshoifsdhfs··on Scientists have finally found the potential “cure” for baldness
Is there the opposite? Can I have a pill/cream that just removes all my head hair so I don't need to worry about shaving it or let it grow into a stupid incontrollable mess?
