october_sky··on Google App Maker Shutting Down
Until it's also shuttered in 18 months, sheesh.
october_sky··on Google App Maker Shutting Down
> Due to the specific source code used for App Maker, you can’t directly migrate your apps to another platform. We recommend that you explore these options

I couldn't help but recall the song, "There she goes again" [1], when I saw this. Google propose partial alternatives, but I wonder how long until those are also shuttered. Is it even worth migrating to another Google product? if you have to do the work yourself, migrate to a different (or open source) vendor.

october_sky··on US feds, states could join forces on Google probes: report
Does anyone know if this typical or atypical for anti-competitive investigations?
october_sky··on Aurora is finally ready to show the world what it’s been up to
Who are in the top 3 then? I thought Tesla was leading, but I haven’t been following closet

Typically, these posts get flagged by users because they realize that they violate HN's guidelines [0]. It's interesting, just off-topic. Not sure what the threshold is for getting flagged vs upvotes, but I suspect it takes far fewer flags that votes.

> If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic.

october_sky··on Preliminary analysis of 11 Novel Coronavirus genomes from the Wuhan outbreak
Ah, ok. Thank you for pointing that out
october_sky··on Preliminary analysis of 11 Novel Coronavirus genomes from the Wuhan outbreak
Yes, it's completely and exceptionally awesome that we can just sign on the Internet and gain this genome sequence. But it's also important to weigh the value. As the article states:

> but there is insufficient epidemiological information for it to be useful here

october_sky··on Three Chinese cities on lockdown, travel disrupted amid coronavirus outbreak
Wow. I thought lockdown was an editorialization of the event, but seems to be accurate. Quote from an NBC News correspondent there:

> Wuhan is now closed off. No flights or trains out, and no mass transit within. Before dawn, we saw public buses parked on streets.

october_sky··on Lastpass Chrome Extension Was Accidentally Deleted
Is that an easy thing to do? Is it like the Tomcat web server where the undeploy button sat RIGHT NEXT TO the reload button? https://javatutorial.net/how-to-deploy-and-undeploy-applicat...

Lots of "whoops" happened a decade ago because of that design decision...

How do you intend to make money from this free service?

october_sky··on The Cruise Origin
> 5G is supposed to make this feasible.

5G does not make this feasible. 5G does not break the speed of light

october_sky··on The Cruise Origin
Not a single job role open for security. Hope they've solved the adversarial attacks against ML before these hit the road. The rendered images look great though!
october_sky··on Amazon Echo Buds
To be fair, with everyone using bluetooth earphones, I got used to people "talking to themselves" now. A decade+ ago I worked in a retail store and thought it was weird, but now I just assume they're using bluetooth
october_sky··on WeWork’s Adam Neumann Steps Down as CEO
Also, smaller, regional real estate companies are doing this (generic co-working spaces) with empty office space, often on the ground floor. I visited a startup at one such location and was impressed with it. It's a strategy to capitalize on unused assets.
october_sky··on Money as a System of Control (2017)
That really is awful, and I'm sorry that happened to you.

I also moved to hoard a few types of liquid assets, and also have accounts with three banks (and multiple cards) to reduce the risk of a single-bank causing this level of impact to me.

No they don't. You're thinking of the Washington Post.

october_sky··on Smart TVs sending sensitive user data to Netflix and Facebook
This is what I do. Bought a Samsung, never connected it to the network, and just use HDMIs. I've never had an issue with it
october_sky··on Smart TVs sending sensitive user data to Netflix and Facebook
Same. My ~2017 Kindle stays on airplane mode for weeks/months at a time. It's the only device I read on, so I leave it in airplane mode to save battery. I've never had it re-enable wifi.
october_sky··on Men Arrested at Courthouse Say They Were Sent to Test Its Security
Ya, I've spoken with Coalfire employees in the past and have respect for them. I'm very curious to follow-up on the outcome of this case, and I feel for the employees sitting in jail right now. Hope it ends well for them

The title is "commercial" not consumers. This isn't for residential, which was already soft-launched months/one-year ago.

Sure, but I'm positive the ESA's argument is their fuel burn should have been zero.
october_sky··on Windows X86-64 System Call Table
Could someone provide examples of what to type in the field, with perhaps the relevance? (I'm not a Windows user, but this looks cool enough to test)
october_sky··on Google Doesn’t Want Staff Debating Politics at Work Anymore
Taking the other side, how do you counter the "So some opinions are okay to state publicly, while others are not?" I think this is the rub... For any given X, you'll find groups of people that are pro-X, and someone anti-X.
