octernion··on Show HN: Report idling vehicles in NYC (and get a cut of the fines) with AI
it’s not working - it’s one of the highest ranking posts - and you really don’t want to go around admitting that. seriously, take a break.
octernion··on Show HN: Report idling vehicles in NYC (and get a cut of the fines) with AI
you have like 50 comments in this thread whining about the law and desperately wanting businesses (not private individuals!) to idle their trucks next to schools.

maybe take a break man. not healthy.

octernion··on Alpha Centauri
one of my favorite games growing up; fascinating to read the history and inspiration for such a great game.

i love that one of my favorite parts of the game (designing your own units) was the game designers' least favorite parts. hah!

i never read the pandora sequence that inspired it - thank you for sharing this article!

octernion··on AI Horseless Carriages
that is 100% the correct course of action. what an insane piece of feedback!
octernion··on How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia?
afaik you still need an account to read more than the first post in a thread, and many of us don't have twitter accounts any longer
octernion··on Ask HN: Do you still use search engines?
hah i use llms for that now too - "option-space 'link to <foo> lang'" and chat returns faster than the whole endeavor of opening google or putting stuff into the nav bar.
octernion··on Show HN: Cursor IDE now remembers your coding prefs using MCP
i store those in my rules files - really all the knowledge i would pass onto another engineer (incl. AI). not sure i follow why you would avoid putting that into AI-readable files in your repo like i do now.
octernion··on Show HN: Cursor IDE now remembers your coding prefs using MCP
not obvious to me why this is an improvement of having the agent just update the rule files directly itself; i have it do that to my various AI-targeted readme files and it works great.
octernion··on War story: the hardest bug I ever debugged
excellent post. i think the lesson is a good one: it's better to have less bugs than more bugs, and for some users, it would still have had an annoying bug.
octernion··on Making Postgres scale
i was reading through this and was going "huh this sounds familiar" until i read who wrote it :)

neat piece of tech! excited to try it out.

octernion··on Happy 20th birthday, Y Combinator
why on earth did they not post this directly to HN? who goes to twitter in 2025
octernion··on The best way to use text embeddings portably is with Parquet and Polars
or you could just use postgres + pgvector? which many apps already have installed by default.
octernion··on The Origins of Wokeness
ah yes an ill-informed whiny screed about wokeness is exactly the kind of content pg is good for. that's hacker content right there!
octernion··on Amazon Aurora DSQL
love that i can spin this up and spend money before any of the documentation is available. neat-o
octernion··on How gophers brought Mount St. Helens back to life in one day
> "An unhappy gopher and plant near the gopher enclosure fence"

i do like it when they take slight liberties with their captions. fantastic

octernion··on ChatGPT Search
love these HN comments where someone ignores the topic entirely. with search enabled it gives the correct answer and sources Wikipedia correctly, not that you tried it
octernion··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
i'm in the exact same boat - was really hoping to see a premium color device with buttons. not sure why they hate us :(
octernion··on Learning to Reason with LLMs
it claims 9.11 is larger, hah.

octernion··on TIL: Versions of UUID and when to use them
haha I had the precise same thought process and immediately didn't finish the article since they didn't have much attention to detail.

i enjoyed reading the appendix though as a snapshot of time.

octernion··on Zed Editor automatically downloads binaries and NPM packages without consent
a classic HN comment! "everyone is just like me"

absolutely incorrect, i loved that it does it for me and do not care even in the slightest and in fact this is 1000x preferable to vscode asking me.

what on earth made you think this was a reasonable reply.

octernion··on I built an ROV to solve missing person cases
yeah, fair enough. we had to build virtually all of the software from scratch, including like, IPC. i wasn't involved as much with hardware but it does seem to be much more out there these days.

still a massive accomplishment imo!

octernion··on I built an ROV to solve missing person cases
having built autonomous ROVs in college, i'm absolutely astonished at what this person accomplished essentially on their own. they are so finicky and piloting them is a whole skill set on its own.

and, what perseverance; it really did read like a detective story and what a good job distilling the cases down to their basics.

what a cool read and an absolute triumph of an accomplishment.

octernion··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
perfect HN comment, no notes
octernion··on iTerm2 and AI Hype Overload
"i didn't try the feature and do not understand how it works, but it has AI so i hate it" is how you sound, fwiw.
octernion··on iTerm2 and AI Hype Overload
i think 99% of folks would take an occasional hallucinated ffmpeg option in exchange for never having to look up the man page again. i trust the iterm dev's judgement even more after this since it's an ideal use case.

gpt-4o seems fantastic at generating cli flags and such, not sure what troubles you have run into. i am questioning your judgement of their judgement, hah.

octernion··on iTerm2 and AI Hype Overload
you are going to hate most software with that attitude over the next few years
octernion··on iTerm2 and AI Hype Overload
i'm sure 95% of the people are just trolling - they can't be that dense about what the change actually is as developers. just silliness.
octernion··on Quantum Soccer (2009)
greg egan is a f'in G. what a boss.
octernion··on Why the world should say No to Sam Altman
stopped reading after the "700000 liters of water" piece; just hand-wavy dramatic ignorance all around. yeah man we should absolutely be losing sleep of 1/6th of a cow's worth of water used for training the most advanced AI models on the planet.
octernion··on Mobile Aloha Learning Bimanual Mobile Manipulation with Low-Cost Who Teleoperat
not entirely sure why there aren't more people talking about this. it seems like incredible technology.

for ~$32k, you can have a teachable manipulator that can go around a 1-story house and do virtually all household tasks.

seems like a game changer. many of the costs can trivially be brought down, as well.
