you would be surprised; i would bet on the plurality being > $300k. hard to survive on much less in the bay area, in any case.
octernion··on iPhone Duo
something around 20% of the site is from the bay area, where that is a somewhat middling salary, so yes.

and of course they can voice it, it's just boring; the point being there are more than plentiful amounts of folks that can trivially afford it.

octernion··on iPhone Duo
agreed about the kindle being more comfortable, but, the best reading device (+ camera) is one you always have on you.
octernion··on iPhone Duo
i love that we get these comments, even 20 years later. the phone costs what many (most? even?) folks on HN make in a day, after taxes.
octernion··on iPhone Duo
will buy it for the kid cue feature alone; what a neat idea. i mainly use my iphone for reading books and taking pictures of my kids so the format will be perfect for me.

the author of the study? albert einstein.

(lmao if you are actually talking about that janky wash post "study")

octernion··on The state of building user interfaces in Rust
that's not really the purpose of the library. think of it more like react.
octernion··on The state of building user interfaces in Rust
hopefully can share some more about it one day!
octernion··on The state of building user interfaces in Rust
no, it's not open source. beyond basic things like amending the styling primitives to be aligned with our aesthetic: - missing primitives (toasts/cards/stacks/inline editable fields/alerts/chips/inputs, etc) - domain heavy components (eg, autocomplete, charts, in our case FHIR renderers) - app systems (eg, i built an actioncable like system which has realtime support for dioxus)
octernion··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
... his whole point was that people don't want to live in cities, which is just factually incorrect. just baseless, pointless idiocy that is just par for the course on HN these days.
octernion··on The deadly rise of giant trucks and SUVs
sometimes i just really enjoy comments that are just so amazingly breathtaking in their stupidity. it's such a treat.
octernion··on The state of building user interfaces in Rust
i've recently built a very complex healthcare application in dioxus and it's been a tremendous joy to work with. right now it's web-only, but the app does run fine as a desktop app when we need it.

having SSR built in means that the UX is amazing - really complex pages load basically instantly, and it degrades just as easily for folks that haven't loaded the WASM. server functions were also fantastic to work with and easy to reason about. and, the hot reloading they built means that most UX changes are reloaded within a ~few seconds, meaning iterating is fast and (mostly) painless.

the native component library dioxus has (dioxus-primitives) is... sparse so i did have to build out a hundred or so basic components, but i've done that across various stacks 5-6 times now over my career so it's a fun little journey at this point. for the components they do provide, the quality bar is very good.

octernion··on PgDog is funded and coming to a database near you
congrats, lev! brings back fond memories of database fires.

i'm sure you'll get 100x comments about "why not just have one fast SSD? it can do 2000 trillion writes/s"

octernion··on Following 35% growth, solar has passed hydro on US grid
ah yes the famine was because the people were lazy and did not want to farm. the history understander has logged on for everyone here!
octernion··on The Singularity will occur on a Tuesday
having played that when it came out, my conclusion was that no, i will definitely be able to be on a beach; i am too meaty and fleshy to be good paperclip
octernion··on The Singularity will occur on a Tuesday
do... do the "poison" people actually think that will make a difference? that's hilarious.
octernion··on The Singularity will occur on a Tuesday
that was precisely my reaction as well. phew machines will deal with the timestamp issue and i can just sit on a beach while we singularityize or whatever.
octernion··on The rapid rise and slow decline of Sam Altman
does he think truly think e.g. opus 4.5 is "plateaued"? i really can't even vaguely take him seriously if he actually thinks that. what a silly man.
octernion··on Shopify, pulling strings at Ruby Central, forces Bundler and RubyGems takeover
you think we should platform racism?
octernion··on Zoox robotaxi launches in Las Vegas
thanks man i'm very happy with myself
octernion··on Zoox robotaxi launches in Las Vegas
hmm all of my assumptions have been wildly correct and you are just further confirming it. good stuff my dude. sorry you choose a place like that to live. sounds miserable.

i'll be sure to wave at the other drivers next time i'm in town in a zoox or waymo and then go back to doing literally anything else than driving.

octernion··on Zoox robotaxi launches in Las Vegas
oh the humanity, maybe on the order of a few minutes. that changes nothing. we should be inconveniencing human drivers more, if anything.

that you feel obligated to use words like "sophistry" tells me everything i need to know about you.

octernion··on Zoox robotaxi launches in Las Vegas
heartless society is when someone has to wait at a red light for a few more seconds. and yes, enumerating a set of silly non-law "rules" you expect drivers on the road to follow is the definition of entitlement.
octernion··on A computer upgrade shut down BART
your tax money broadly speaking doesn't go to BART; it's massively underfunded. not sure why they are the target of the snark.
octernion··on Bluesky now platform of choice for science community
as a threads user since the beginning and a big fan of the platform, my answer is strongly "no."

which is my favorite reason to be there and i hope it doesn't change.

it's full of instagram and facebook users, which to use the common parlance, are all "normies." it's full of normal people have normal opinions in small spaces. there's very little viral posts or bits or memes that are carried outwards.

that being said dril started posting again there recently as have some other bigger ex weird twitter people so who knows.

octernion··on Bluesky now platform of choice for science community
i just went on, searched bsky for variants of ai/llm/generative, and literally did not see one positive post after scrolling for several minutes (beyond some boring generative art slop, which isn't really "positive" imo).

it seems just the same sycophancy, but in the opposite way twitter is.

maybe my searches were poor so i'm curious what you see that is in any way "positive"; even given your example, searching for ai + cancer is just thousands of posts with some variant of "ai is a cancer."

it's so single note that it's no wonder that growth for bluesky has plummeted. it's just boring.

octernion··on Claude Code weekly rate limits
wow, a team that has one nine of availability and trending downwards fast is relieving pressure. big surprise!
octernion··on I wrote my PhD Thesis in Typst
well it was a mix of word and markdown files being converted before; converting the word files was somewhat annoying but iirc i exported them and converted those. i wrote all the custom styling we used; pretty straightforward
octernion··on I wrote my PhD Thesis in Typst
i switched all of our pdf generation to typst - fantastic software. love how efficient it is; it makes previewing trivial and iteration very fast.
