What is illegal content in this context?
oceanhaiyang··on Completing a computer science degree on Coursera
Why did you go beyond a BA in CS if you’re going to not work in academia? Sounds like a PhD didn’t help much?
oceanhaiyang··on Nintendo has raised its employees base salary by 10%
For someone in Japan this is shockingly high! Money doesn’t go far here at all
oceanhaiyang··on GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17
The head dev consistently gets upset and threatens people via mastodon rants. Just because the team has attempted to quiet their bad PR doesn’t mean it hasn’t and doesn’t happen.

Your example is not as unhinged as what I’m referring to.

oceanhaiyang··on GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17
Apologies, I didn’t catch this reply.

I believe this video discusses some of these, I’ll have to scroll through Mastodon to find more.

Edit examples:

I’m referring to Daniel Micay using the official account to fight other people.

Seems I’m not up to date, he supposedly “stepped down” from fighting others, https://www.reddit.com/r/PrivacyGuides/comments/13spm4d/dani...

I firmly recall within the past two years witnessing similar actions but I’ll have to keep searching

You could also try your local schools as well. Many children have no access to one.

Really like how Django writes his response. Well written and very polite. Feels like I only see that sort of genuine writing from penpals
oceanhaiyang··on Why Japanese companies do so many different things
Maybe try a book instead of YouTube. Not weird as it probably isn’t something that would get clicks
oceanhaiyang··on Logging Off
I unironically think ai slop has made me appreciate human trash more. I received plenty of bad essays prior to ai but at least there was some thought behind the undergrads first attempts at writing
oceanhaiyang··on Logging Off
Interesting take. I’ve never seen someone be for this but I can agree that not being anonymous would force some people to potentially act better, but then there’s Facebook.
oceanhaiyang··on Logging Off
This authors reaction appears big but there is truth to it. Your comment is truly delusional. Online is the world? Come on.
oceanhaiyang··on Learn Your Way: Reimagining Textbooks with Generative AI
No one who understands ai can rely on it to help us learn. I provided one with 100 citations I wanted to standardize and it deleted 10 and made up 10 to replace them. Can’t imagine this being used to replace a textbook or even explain a textbook.

There are already some similar projects that use a thermal printer to achieve this.
oceanhaiyang··on How RSS beat Microsoft
I hate that the self hosting newsletter does this.
oceanhaiyang··on Show HN: I recreated Windows XP as my portfolio
> I started from zero knowledge and spent months collaborating with AI agents as a learning experience. Every pixel and every function went through me. The AI translated what I asked for into code, but every decision was human.

This is so absurdly cringe and absolutely not coding. It’s like saying I spent absolutely trying to get ChatGPT to write my college essay for me. At the end of the writing period, I wrote nothing but decided which ai goop I liked best.

oceanhaiyang··on Texas Instruments’ new plants where Apple will make iPhone chips
I read they either dump it into a local river while monitoring it or back to water treatment plant. Some datacenters have started reusing water but for some reason using it more than once is not appealing. Definitely the biggest problem is it’s not always a closed system and dumping it into a river potentially damages the river and makes the area lose their water. A percentage of the water is also lost via evaporation.

oceanhaiyang··on The cost of interrupted work (2023)
Why is the entire blog aligned to the left on mobile? Even the background is to the left.

Though this article mostly discusses exact time, I find this idea very interesting in relation to my dissertation. Minor distraction probably causes me to waste a few minutes to tens of minutes to get focused again. Having a child and a partner that need help when I’m working from home has trained me to be able to power write in 1-2 hours what others do in a day. A bigger distraction like an issue causing stress might distract me for half of my work day. It’s not that I don’t want to continue but it’s hard to get back onto task just as one was.

oceanhaiyang··on Vibe coding tips and tricks
I really don’t see how vibe coding has any place here. It’s just writing bad code without knowing anything it does.

> Rather than present useless analogies, engage with what's actually been presented. I didn't ask about your grandmother.

I guess I can’t make the statement that all HN users are not jerks.

Calling analogies useless because you won’t engage with others who disagree is rich.

oceanhaiyang··on The future is not self-hosted, but self-sovereign
> Whatever you think HN is, it isn't. People are not represented by a subdomain of an accelerator.

This is like something my racist grandmother says when I tell her a historical fact and she says you can’t tell me all plantation owners are racist because you didn’t meet them all or something similar ridiculous.

People can make statements from experience. Claiming HN doesn’t love blogs is out of touch.

oceanhaiyang··on Maintaining weight loss
Living in Japan made me get down to my all time lowest weight, returning to America made me shoot up past where I started… healthy lifestyle, lots of walking over driving, and healthy eating options is all it is!
oceanhaiyang··on The future is not self-hosted, but self-sovereign
Very anti-HN thinking to be posted here. I see a common trend in people loving blogging for it helps solidify their thoughts. Making an LLM do this is only wasting everyone time.

That website was a very fun read :) what a cool place and so awesome to have so many friends to play with.

This line made me chuckle:

> I suggested to Jade: Should we move to Austin? Jade initially said no, because she wanted our kids to benefit from Palo Alto's school district. At the time, it was rated #12 in the nation. But, looking closer at the rankings revealed a surprise: The Eanes school district in Austin was #8. When I showed this to Jade, she changed her mind.

Could tell your wife was Chinese without even seeing the name. Chinese parents will made radical housing decisions for their children, even just to move from #12 to #8, lol. Love this.
