obsurveyor··on Ask HN: Is there a sane alternative to Angular and React?
Ractive[1] is pretty good imho. Development runs hot and cold but I've found it a joy to work with. Documentation could be a bit better, especially when it comes to components.

obsurveyor··on Microsoft to shut down Wunderlist in favor of its new app, To-Do
> I totally agree with this statement, but here we're talking about 0.5 year of planning !

Yeah but that's not necessarily in man-years. Maybe he worked on it an hour or two a day. Now we're talking around two man-weeks of planning.

obsurveyor··on Ask HN: What are your impressions of the HoloLens so far?
Because the discussion was about replacing physical monitors, not complaining about the resolution. You're jumping at shadows.
obsurveyor··on Ask HN: What are your impressions of the HoloLens so far?
You're too caught up in it. Take a breath, read what's being written, then respond.

The reason I asked for video from Microsoft is because users consistently crop the views to only show the postage stamp AR view HoloLens offers and presents it as the full video which is a misrepresentation of what HoloLens is capable of. Also, that second video doesn't actually include any video from the HoloLens from a wearer's perspective but thanks for trying.

I don't want to interact with you anymore.

obsurveyor··on Ask HN: What are your impressions of the HoloLens so far?
Please link to any video from Microsoft that shows an actual, simluated view of wearing a current generation HoloLens.. I've been looking, still haven't found one. All I can find are marketing videos that show fantastical visions of what AR will look like some day but not today.
obsurveyor··on Ask HN: What are your impressions of the HoloLens so far?
You'd need like a 6k display to even start getting close to the 1920x1024 at arm's length equivalence. That's at least a generation or two ahead of where we're at today. That's why all this Mixed Reality stuff coming out of Microsoft today is just so much talk.

I'm not arguing against them working on it, there should be a foundation but we're currently at the equivalent of the late-90s, early 2000s VR devices when it comes to HoloLens and AR.

obsurveyor··on Ask HN: What are your impressions of the HoloLens so far?
CastAR might let you do that, to a limited extent. They work by projecting stereoscopic light on to retro-reflective material. However, it depends on the resolution of their projectors and if you can some how get your computer's video to them(from the sounds of it, the current generation is an all-in-one device).
obsurveyor··on Ask HN: What are your impressions of the HoloLens so far?
You're mixing up $300 VR headsets with AR headsets.

> it's amazing how few people are paying attention to this announcement

It's not amazing because they're not showing anything except what appear to be fake, marketing videos. They've always been cagey with the HoloLens and what it was actually like and it looks like they're continuing down that line.

obsurveyor··on Farmers look for ways to circumvent tractor software locks
> I haven't ever met someone who has sat in a tractor without a positive opinion of this company.

Then you must not know very many farmers or ranchers because Case IH(formerly International) vs. Deere is a very big thing in those circles. It is very much a rivalry with typically no overlap much like the Ford/Chevy/Dodge rivalries.

obsurveyor··on What Happens If You Break an Artwork?
Someone must have surely done one of those clickbait articles featuring the picture question 'Modern Abstract Art or Random Picture of Painter's Scaffold'?
obsurveyor··on VS Code uses 13% CPU when idle due to blinking cursor rendering
> you add a ilogical rule like "min-width:0"

Yeah, like my favorite of these lately, widows and orphans. Chrome changed a default that affected inline-blocks within columns that caused them to wrap prematurely after version 52 or so. It is especially bad because the other popular browsers don't even support these yet and looked fine.

obsurveyor··on 3D printing with cellulose
This is a bit out of date. Nylon, PETG, TPE/TPU and polycarbonate are quite common for home 3D printing now as well as a number of hybrid materials.
obsurveyor··on Windows 10 Tip: Turn Off File Explorer Advertising
You can turn app suggestions and ads on the lock screen off in Pro.
obsurveyor··on Password Rules Are Bullshit
This just happened to me on the Wii U with my Nintendo ID. I had set a 20 character password some time in the past(probably the limit on whatever webpage I used to sign up) and when I tried to log into my Wii U recently, only 16 characters were available for entry.
obsurveyor··on Repairing My Tesla Model S Has Been a Nightmare
> Perhaps the body shop is better at taking care of conventional cars and lead acid batteries, and just needs a little experience and education about lithium-ion systems?

Lithium-ion batteries are much less subject to drain over time if they're not being used.

The Model S uses a 12V lead-acid battery though(and subject to the drain and upkeep you mentioned), so I'm not sure why they author has been waiting on this bespoke, single manufacturer one. Unless maybe the connectors are non-standard?

obsurveyor··on Why we are not leaving the cloud
This is a very naive view of the issue. There are many hands in the production of a film and many rights associated with are assigned at the time it was made, screening rights, distribution rights, periods for when rights expire, etc. When new technology, such as streaming on computers, comes about, the licensing of new rights needs to be established all over again with all the rights holders. A single holder that can't be contacted or established(due to death, closure, acquisition, etc) can effectively put any new licensing into limbo.

This isn't even getting into exclusivity licensing that the studios seem to be real keen on doing with Netflix, Amazon, Crackle, VUDU and a jillion other streaming services. You know those shows that are branded "Netflix Original" on Netflix? Those aren't literally made by Netflix, they've just paid for some/all of the production and licensed them exclusively for some period of time. They're still produced by all the same studios that have been producing shows and movies for years.

obsurveyor··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Then I guess it has begun, the page is now showing red. I'd put a picture on imgur but it's not loading.
obsurveyor··on What happened to clockless computer chips?
Are you talking about something different here? Kaby Lake is 14nm.
obsurveyor··on USPS confirms Byuu’s PAL SNES package has been lost
> Tracking is useless, they like to mark packages as delivered well before they actually arrive, and sometimes they just plain give the stuff to the wrong address.

USPS marks stuff delivered before it arrives here at work. They seem to just run through all the packages and flag them when they put them on the truck. Had it happen with one from Amazon just yesterday. At least I've always received them. I have more trouble with Amazon not putting everything in the box they're supposed to.

obsurveyor··on GitHub commit search: “remove password”
You can scrape the issues without exposing the token. You could probably do it by just subscribing to all of them and parsing emails. No one(especially in security) should be using a third party search to match sensitive data. It's like searching Google for your social security number.
obsurveyor··on Layoffs Taboo, Japan Workers Are Sent to the Boredom Room (2013)
Think about it again in terms of what the parent said in the second paragraph: You, tboyd47, are hired but the employer correctly anticipated during the interview process that you would not be able to succeed but needed a body and you were the closest match. Did you really fail if you never had a chance? That's why he said it was unproductive and unethical.
obsurveyor··on Microsoft Kills off ISVs by Foisting Its Own Products That Are No Better
Just got a complaint yesterday of anti-virus software quarantining a file out of a users's .git folder, breaking the repo completely until they restored it.
obsurveyor··on Google – My Activity
I have Location turned off on my phone and have had Location History by Google turned off for ages. Google Maps on my Galaxy S6 looks like the desktop screenshot.
obsurveyor··on More than 90% of ‘genuine’ Apple chargers and cables sold on Amazon are fake
Poster child of the rotten ratings right here:

obsurveyor··on Samsung to Permanently Discontinue Galaxy Note 7 Smartphone
Delete your *.wsj.com cookies, use a referrer control addon and set it to google.com for wsj.com and enjoy clicking HN links and not see the content block.
obsurveyor··on Blender 2.78 released
Sounds like just typical struggle with learning terms from a new software. You're looking for Parenting in blender it sounds like, much like the grouping you're talking about.

How to do what you wanted:

Shift-A Cube Shift-A Cube G to move second cube(assuming you don't want them stacked) Shift right click to select other cube Ctrl+P select Object to parent one to the other(you would use Keep Transform if you wanted to keep them together but move/scale/rotate separate)

Look in the Scene graph on the right, they're still separate objects so you can assign different materials to their faces, unwrap, un-parent them with Alt+P, whatever.

If you wanted to merge the geometry, you'd use Ctrl+J to join them.

obsurveyor··on Blender 2.78 released
Full of hyperbole. It's a different UI and you have to learn it. It's extremely self-consistent. Try putting a neophyte in front of ZBrush and they'd say the same thing but tons of people adapt and use it.
obsurveyor··on Things I Hate About PostgreSQL (2013)
It seems great for presenting them but after the fact:

Pollutes browser history(or if you click too fast, doesn't even have any), not convenient to browse at your own pace, no way to jump to a specific slide(visually)

The formatting is really good too and would probably work great as an article format but you're stuck reading tidbits, going back and forth.

obsurveyor··on Cheap MacBook chargers create big sparks
Lightning connectors with their exposed leads just make me all kinds of paranoid about leaving them out on my always cluttered desks. Also, I often get a big spark when plugging my official Apple chargers(Macbook Pro and the 29W USB-C charger) into a surge protector.
obsurveyor··on Facebook will force advertising on ad-blocking users
