obsidianbases1··on The OnlyFans Economy of American AI
I'm not any less concerned about the US companies.

A Chinese company seems more likely to produce Chinese products that don't directly compete in the US market.

While a US company can ship the product as a feature of their platform and undercut on price while making up the revenue elsewhere

Edit: I personally use US models, but I'm not naive enough to think that's any sort of real protection of IP

I really enjoyed this critical take on the current landscape. It's a breathe of fresh air from the seemingly neverending stream of sycophants

Depending on RAG is a workflow problem, not an AI problem
obsidianbases1··on Time to talk about my writerdeck
I agree with this. It's not that the digital tools don't exist, it's that my best think gets done when I go for a walk with nothing but a pen and a stack of blank 3x5s.
obsidianbases1··on Time to talk about my writerdeck
At one point I had a physical filing system, but now they get converted to digital pretty quickly since I don't have to pay 10/hr to get it done. I also usually keep a daily card, and sometimes a few weekly/current lists on the note cards and just carry them around until I'm done with them.

It's mainly the capturing of the ideas that I prefer writing physically. After that, being able to move them around my digital system makes them most useful because I can have dynamic views that surface priorities and related notes without having to physically sift through the stacks.

If it's less than 80 outside it's cold. If it's over 69 inside then it's hot and I can't sleep

obsidianbases1··on Time to talk about my writerdeck
My thoughts are so all over the place that I've settled on 3x5 note cards. It also makes the transition to the computer much easier, because I can re-arrange them in a way that is somewhat organized before taking a picture that gets transcribed
obsidianbases1··on Time to talk about my writerdeck
Pen and paper for writing. Computer for editing.
obsidianbases1··on Texas woman arrested for Facebook post about town water quality
Mostly this

> They did it to show that if you speak out against them, they'll arrest and inconvenience you. So the next person who gets a thought to speak out might decide not to bother.

That needs reiterating because an uncomfortable amount of people think this sort of thing simply doesn't affect them.

obsidianbases1··on Show HN: Files.md – Open-source alternative to Obsidian
The plugin ecosystem is what really makes Obsidian different from the rest.

While OSS is nice, in theory it allows vibe-coding personalizations, without a clear plugin standard then every update would cause a merge headache.

And there is no lack of text editors.

The first real Obsidian alternative would allow use of existing Obsidian plugins. And I think this one thing could really make an alternative gain traction, with both users and those who contribute to the plugin ecosystem.

obsidianbases1··on I don't think AI will make your processes go faster
Indeed. I suspect most effective AI users are quietly making real progress toward their objectives.

Anecdotally, I see a lot of problems/solutions content about AI that doesn't reflect at all the challenges I face. But trying to tell people that there are other ways of doing things, especially when it conflicts with token-maxxing, is a lost cause

obsidianbases1··on Nuclear receptor 4A1 linked to health effects of coffee: study
Good to know. Any recommendations where to find this?
obsidianbases1··on Nuclear receptor 4A1 linked to health effects of coffee: study
True. I love black coffee, decaf or not. Just thought it was worth pointing out since the thread is about health benefits
obsidianbases1··on Nuclear receptor 4A1 linked to health effects of coffee: study
Are you familiar with the process of extracting the caffeine in decaf?

Unfortunately it isn't without potential downsides.

obsidianbases1··on Business Owners Are Worst Clients
Familiarity breeds contempt. If business owners are your target, you'll quickly see the negative patterns. But same can be said about any target audience/persona.

I'd be interested if the author ever focused their efforts on a broad consumer archetype. Or worked in retail like a grocery store.

Every segment has a type that will spoil the bunch of you let them.

obsidianbases1··on A practical guide for setting up Zettelkasten method in Obsidian
Having to manage links and tags for every note quickly makes the notion of a note system less than appealing.

Personally, I use a "temporary -Zettelkasten" strategy in my inbox. But it's more that I just timestamp new notes.

The power of obsidian imo is that I can quickly organize those inbox notes into their respective project notes with the touch of a hotkey

And then again in the project note, the Obsidian editor features (mostly around useful hotkeys) allow me to quickly manage my notes how I see fit (no particular strategy here other than being heavily influenced by GTD)

obsidianbases1··on Unverified: What Practitioners Post About OCR, Agents, and Tables
Sounds reasonable until you consider that the "prompt" might include a million tokens of context, not to mention follow-up/iterations
obsidianbases1··on Unverified: What Practitioners Post About OCR, Agents, and Tables
Interesting complaint, because many might not share any of their ideas if it weren't for LLMs making it easy. Not everyone has the incentive to dedicate a day to producing writing worth publishing. But maybe they would if it took significantly less time.

Even considering HNs no LLMs for comments rule, which I mostly agree with, I think we would all lose of the same rule were applied to publishing in general.
