obscur··on Sharing Screen with GPT 4 vision
GPT4 is multimodal in the sense that it can take images as input. The person is using a speech to text system such as OpenAIs Whisper and serving screenshots and voice transcripts to GPT4 and GPT4 is returning a text response which is converted to speech using a text to speech system such as OpenAIs TTS API.
obscur··on Buddhist office turns to Thai cyber police over AI-generated Facebook content
I don’t know how one would settle the question but I’d venture to say that Theravada is not less close to the Western impression of Buddhism than other parts of Buddhism.

Additionally, many people’s ideas of Buddhism is understood through their knowledge of mindfulness which was brought to the West through Theravada to a large part.

obscur··on Chuck Feeney has died
Effective altruists are most commonly donating to specific relatively high-evidence causes in low-income countries or much more speculative existential risk causes. Donations such as his donations to Carneggie Mellon University are an example of donations that is not common among effective altruists.
obscur··on SlowLlama: Finetune llama2-70B and codellama on MacBook Air without quantization
It uses LoRA which is much smaller than full model
obscur··on Amazon will invest up to $4B in Anthropic
Depends on what you mean by works out. They are planning on doing huge training runs the coming years so they sure can make use of compute from both Google Cloud and AWS

How is this related to the topic?

obscur··on Dreams of new physics fade with latest muon magnetism result
He’s explicitly saying that it is not embarrassing in this sense and that it is rather that the discrepancy is ‘awkward’
obscur··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI
Seems cool! I know basic Spanish from Duolingo but not enough to understand what it says to after a few rounds so my suggestion is that there is a side-by-side translated version of the conversation.
obscur··on Meta's Head of AI Has Some Interesting Beliefs About Dominance and Submission
I assume he means that models will be fine-tuned (or otherwise steered) by developers to have submissive behavior.
obscur··on Meta's Head of AI Has Some Interesting Beliefs About Dominance and Submission
Sounds like that to me too.
obscur··on MIT 6.S191: Recurrent Neural Networks, Transformers, and Attention [video]
Yes, see also the transformers library containing many transformer models in pytorch
obscur··on Humanness in the Age of AI
This is intended to be a way to fairly distribute UBI, so a fee alone does not work in that case.
obscur··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
Your first sentence is interesting, why do you think that?
obscur··on GPT-4 System Card [pdf]
While I agree it is worth noting that this was already tested in some kind of sandbox environment that only ‘simulated’ replication.
obscur··on Surviving disillusionment (2020)
What are some things you have met where it seemed outright evil?

(I don’t have any work experience yet)

obscur··on Neurons in a dish learn to play Pong
I would like a source for the first claim. When I read the preprint for this paper half a year ago it was actually one of their claims that to the best of their knowledge their Pong experiment was the first to show human neurons being ‘better’.
obscur··on Whisper – open source speech recognition by OpenAI
Measuring performance in rounds of successful Chinese whisper

(irony)

obscur··on Beyond Hyperanthropomorphism
Surely this cannot be an argument for whether something is a legitimate field. Surely there are some scientists somewhere studying the risks of a very risky viruses. At least prima facie, such research would neither be boring or unnecessary.
obscur··on A demo of GPT-3's ability to understand long instructions
I think I heard of people with brain damage who does not keep an internal state, they feel like they continuously wake up and only remember memories from before the brain damage. That would be a kind of parallel to consider, or at least somewhat analogous. I think most of us assume that such people would have phenomenal consciousness / subjective experience / qualia
obscur··on Man overcharged 20 rupees for India train ticket wins 22-year legal battle
Interesting perspective, where did you read about this?
obscur··on Potential fabrication in research threatens the amyloid theory of Alzheimer’s
I heard from a chemistry researcher that it is also common in that field to give vague descriptions of synthesis procedures in order to allow authors to churn out more papers.
obscur··on Psychedelic frees up depressed brain, study shows
This is a valid problem and my impression is that researchers are aware of this problem but are just working with what they have got.

obscur··on Psychedelic frees up depressed brain, study shows
You mean that blinding is not meant to be able to separate the effect from placebo? If so, I don't agree. I often hear it mentioned in the context of psychedelic research that it is a problem that psychedelics result in unblinding. E.g. Carhart-Harris the other day https://twitter.com/RCarhartHarris/status/151390616463902310...
obscur··on The illusion of evidence based medicine
Seems very unlikely to me that it would not be a combination. We have both rational and irrational parts, conscious and unconscious parts.

I'd venture one does not have to look far in the anthropology literature to find good evidence that gifts just like other favors serves a function in building reciprocal relationships. Since it is likely so fundamental, I have a hard time believing it would not have any effect on the independence of the doctor.

obscur··on The illusion of evidence based medicine
Might be wrong, but I think they just mean that when you do large scale trials you aggregate over the population, and determine if the medication had a statistically significant effect. You can get evidence that a subgroup does not react well, but you might not, if that is not your focus.

A key concept and solution here is 'precision medicine', tailoring medicine based on more precise information about the individual.
