By using IAM roles for EC2 you can also move more of the key management to Amazon. When you attach an IAM role to an EC2 instance Amazon will provide temporary credentials through the local metadata server and automatically rotate them for you. This avoids storing and copying your credentials, and makes it easy to separate your environments.

One possibility if you want mountable storage, is to use our ObjectiveFS[1] filesystem on your digitalocean instances. It is a bit different from EBS in that it is a shared filesystem instead of just a cloud block device, so it depends on your use case if it might work for you.

For sharing a filesystem between servers without managing your own high-availability cluster, you could try our ObjectiveFS [1].

Congratulations! It is great to see more focus on data sovereignty and security.

Have you checked out ObjectiveFS? It gives you a regular POSIX shared filesystem for your servers. Would be curious to know what you think.

For laptops it might be easier to avoid storing any of your sensitive data to disk.

Use a non-local encrypted filesystem per project to get the isolation and to avoid your local storage. Mount the project filesystem when needed, unmount it when done, and when not in use it is simply inaccessible to the laptop.

While any encrypted filesystem not stored on your laptop would work for this, ours[1] makes this workflow very easy.

Persistence for AWS can be relatively simple if you use a distributed filesystem, such as GlusterFS (http://gluster.org) or our ObjectiveFS (https://objectivefs.com). You get a shared namespace for all your instances and persisting your data becomes as simple as writing files.

If you are willing to trust your privacy to strong crypto (something you probably would want to use even on a private network), ObjectiveFS (https://objectivefs.com) might be worth looking into.

MinimaLT[1] is another interesting protocol with similar goals. From the abstract:

"Minimal Latency Tunneling (MinimaLT) is a new network protocol that provides ubiquitous encryption for maximal confidentiality, including protecting packet headers. MinimaLT provides server and user authentication, extensive Denial-of-Service protections, and IP mobility while approaching perfect forward secrecy."

Client-side encryption can be very fast when done right. For your use case a filesystem stored in the cloud might be a better solution, that way only the data you are using is downloaded to each machine and the writes are done immediately. Give ObjectiveFS[1] a try, the free preview is available for a few more days, and see how fast client-side encryption can be.

Would accessing your files using a shared POSIX compatible filesystem that's stored in your own S3 bucket be a possible alternative to self-hosting? With everything encrypted using the NaCl crypto library and stored directly on Amazon S3 with no middleman?

I wanted exactly that and built ObjectiveFS. You can try the free preview at https://objectivefs.com

If you have a crypto heavy app I recommend the fast and easy to use correctly NaCl project.

If you want to mount an encrypted filesystem stored on S3, you might want to try ObjectiveFS. https://objectivefs.com
