obituary_latte··on Where can I see Hokusai's Great Wave today?
Ah, interesting. Thanks for the clarification.
obituary_latte··on Where can I see Hokusai's Great Wave today?
Doesn't the site say the Great Wave is on display in Farmington, CT? Next stop is Boston, but currently the Great Wave (not sure about rest of collection) seems to be in CT.
obituary_latte··on Where can I see Hokusai's Great Wave today?
According to the site, it's currently in Farmington CT if that is any closer.
obituary_latte··on Passage by 1Password: Add passkey support to your app or website
Interesting concept. I like the idea of being able to easily leverage Biometrics for auth, but am reluctant to be tied to a third-party to support authentication. I'm sure it could be switched out quickly for something else, but that could be a shock to less tech savvy etc. users.
obituary_latte··on Into Thin AirPods
How would locking them to the owner make them harder to use? They're smart enough and have designed enough software where they could trivially allow the user to share them if desired- that is the only "inconvenience" I can image it would cause.

I doubt they either didn't think of it or that it wasn't suggested frequently.r

obituary_latte··on Unrelated Words Puzzle
Agreed--I think it's overloaded at the moment. Not clear how it's supposed to work since the responses are so delayed. Looks fun, though!

I'm totally guessing, but could it be actual corporate strategy? If they are easy to steal, AppleCare+ becomes more appealing and/or having to replace them increases sales. It's certainly an easy problem to solve. Can anyone think of any other legitimate reason not to?
obituary_latte··on Space Elevator
Very cool. Only wish we could switch from meters to feet the same way we can switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit.

I think the idea is that if they can get the process down and prove it's viable (today was a huge step in that direction, especially surviving MAX-Q and not blowing up), it will scale because instead of spending TONS of money on tooling that is typically not reusable past a singe iteration, they can iterate and produce quickly and efficiently. Curious, though, why you say it won't scale? Why not?
obituary_latte··on Launch HN: Electric Air (YC W23) – Heat pump sold directly to homeowners
Ah, very cool (LOL). Even if it's not totally accurate, getting a ballpark sense of what the costs might be would be huge. Thanks!

Does it explain somewhere that I missed how the different size units translate to sq. ft.? I would think that would be a great way to convey which size might work for people, but I might be missing some other factor that doesn't allow for that conversion?
obituary_latte··on Minimum Viable Hugo
Ah, duh...that makes sense! Thank you!
obituary_latte··on A low latency guitar effects processor suitable for running on a Raspberry Pi
Always hear about the Fractal Axe FXIII--seems like the gold standard in guitar FX. Didn't realize they had smaller, non-rack-mount form factor devices. Very interested in trying out the FM3 now that you brought it to my attention. Thanks!!

Is it just me or is the repo empty (besides readme and license) for anyone else?
obituary_latte··on Loopholes in Google’s data safety labels
Unfortunately, as is almost always the case, the almighty dollar skews ideals. Is it even technically possible for a public company to be "good" these days?
obituary_latte··on Psql Tips
Can you expand a little on psql service usage please? I tried googling, but just came up with using ~/.pg_service.conf and setting ENV variables and the like. Thanks!
obituary_latte··on Show HN: Mox - Modern full-featured low-maintenance self-hosted mail server
Just throwing my 2c in the ring: I've been using iRedMail for I want to say 10+ years now. Just simple linux no-frills webmail with nice admin and default webmail. Best part is it is dead simple to set up, the developer is very nice and responsive on his forum and it has been rock-solid. Granted, I don't send a lot of mail from it but it has been running as a journal for many years without issue. I do send some mail from it--mostly from devices--to my gmail and have never had a problem with blacklisting. I think this mostly depends on your IP reputation so your host and how you host it is important.
obituary_latte··on OpenSSH Pre-Auth Double Free – Writeup and Proof-of-Concept
The reason it triggered my question is they had to do something similar to get the exploit to work (add +ssh-rsa to putty). Thanks, though, for the thoughtful reply.
obituary_latte··on OpenSSH Pre-Auth Double Free – Writeup and Proof-of-Concept
I upgraded my Mac to Monterey the other day and all of a sudden all of my SSH connections would not work any more. After some digging, I came across a solution where adding

    Host hostnameOrIPaddress
        HostKeyAlgorithms +ssh-rsa
        PubKeyAcceptedKeyTypes +ssh-rsa
to ~/.ssh/config fixed the issue. I'm wondering if doing this makes me more vulnerable? Or is bad practice somehow? NB: using iTerm2 3.5.0beta9 and Oh My Zsh master (a1c54e0).

Same, here...hoping if nothing else, the placebo effect might help my mother's mood/esteem. But here's hoping it actually works for us both!

I think I also read the the comments last time this was posted someone talking about how their kids locker room had a bunch of phones stolen but the thief's left all of the iPhones because they couldn't be unlocked.

If they think gas stoves are dangerous, I wonder what they think about ventless gas fireplaces?

It must have updated or something. I copied and pasted directly from the website.
obituary_latte··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
Does it though? I often find it's fun to find new and novel ways to create things that are both clear and efficient. Creative problem solving can be leveraged anytime.

It looks like you can get a wrong answer asking for why ANY company went bankrupt:

> what led to the bankruptcy of jp morgan chase?

> The bankruptcy of JP Morgan Chase was likely due to a combination of factors, including a drop in liquidity, a decrease in market confidence, and the rising cost of debt. Additionally, JP Morgan Chase was heavily exposed to the risky subprime mortgage sector, and its increased risk-taking and lack of transparency about its financial activities likely contributed to its eventual downfall. Additionally, JP Morgan Chase also faced numerous legal issues, including investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which may have contributed to its bankruptcy.

edit: it might be a special case with banks due to the difficulties in the late 2000's. It does get companies e.g. CNN or Fox correct.

obituary_latte··on Iranian women compete at chess tournament without hijab: media reports
I feel proud as a human to see these brave women standing up for their rights and wish them and their fellow countrypeople all of the success with no bloodshed. It's time we move out of the age of religious compulsion on all fronts.
obituary_latte··on How are you doing?
What an amazing collection on that site. Some of the most interesting and engaging web content I've ever seen. Great stuff, thanks for sharing.

Unfortunately, connecting MacOS Safari debugging crashes the debugger when the iOS Safari crashes as far as I can tell.

Same for me. Doesn't happen in Firefox which is strange because I thought all browsers used the same Safari engine...
obituary_latte··on Castopod – Open-source podcast hosting platform
Wow, that's pretty impressive especially with no code changes! Thanks for the breakdown and for sharing!
