oakfr··on Tell HN: Amplitude (YC W12) just went public – AMA
Thank you for your reply. Makes sense.

By the way, thank you for running this AMA and answering all the questions with so much clarity and transparency. What an example!

oakfr··on Tell HN: Amplitude (YC W12) just went public – AMA
While I am happy for your company and for your first 10 employees (congrats, really), I am not sure that looking at their return teaches us much.

Joining a fresh startup as employee #10 (or less) is somewhat of a gamble (even at YC). The following data would put things in perspective:

1. How do the average first 10 employees of a YC startup do?

2. How did the following cohorts in your company do?

I am not trying to be negative here, but trying to put things in perspective. Congrats again!

oakfr··on Sirubo: Packet filtering to block Google and Facebook tracking
As mentioned above by @marketingtech, the websites assume the responsibility of managing user consent and therefore are GDPR compliant.

This is why browsing the internet feels like filing for a mortgage now. But it's compliant.

oakfr··on On Solitude
Thank you for sharing. What a beautiful talk.
oakfr··on Always Multiply Your Estimates by π (2013)
You most likely ran into a bad lead. His/her role was to coach & mentor you to help you become a better engineer, not just to draw diagrams on a white board.

"everyone knew how to make software" -> if that was the case, you should have found help and support around you organically.

I hope you're in a better situation now. Don't let this kind of experience hurt your self-esteem. You deserved a better place.

oakfr··on Designing Low Upkeep Software
I am with you here. That being said, I believe the author refers to « weaker » libraries (higher-level, more recent etc. )
oakfr··on Designing Low Upkeep Software
I evaluate the liveness of a github project based on the responses to questions (latest post, time to reply). Not by when the last change was made.
oakfr··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
MacBook folks: we’re in 2021. These laptops turn on and off very quickly. Forget about sleep, hibernation etc. Just shut it down.
oakfr··on The First Rule of Machine Learning: Start Without Machine Learning
There are domains where the use of ML is not only valid but the best viable option (e.g. recommendation systems, computer vision, etc.)

A few thoughts on how to maximize your chances of winning in this case:

oakfr··on The First Rule of Machine Learning: Start Without Machine Learning
The aerospace industry has been using CV successfully for decades, well before ML appeared. So I would temper your last statement a bit.

That being said, you are right to say that ML changed the game entirely for CV in industry at large.

oakfr··on Show HN: 40k HN comments mentioning books, extracted using deep learning
@tracyhenry: how does the system work exactly? I cannot find any documentation on your website.
oakfr··on Show HN: 40k HN comments mentioning books, extracted using deep learning
This is really cool stuff. Would be really nice to do the same for movies :)

oakfr··on Personal finance experts don’t get wealthy by following their own advice
You’ll never get rich unless you start a business. Oh by the way, lucky you, I happen to be selling tips for making millions off a blog (just click this sponsored link. I made $6M with mine, I swear).

Seriously, since when did HN decide to sponsor this kind of self-interested clickbait?

oakfr··on In a patch of Arizona, everyone knows Waymo, but few use it
A bunch of robo taxi startups are going after this market which, while being quite real, is minuscule compared to Waymo’s ambition.
oakfr··on Welcoming our first riders in San Francisco
Level 2 is becoming a commodity. Its commercial value will fall to zero very quickly.
oakfr··on Our vacation rental had surveillance cameras. The landlord used them a lot
Clients lying should not be a good motivation for a landlord to break the law. I'm not saying this landlord did, but am challenging your reasoning here.
oakfr··on Our vacation rental had surveillance cameras. The landlord used them a lot
I can relate, as a neighbor frustrated by rogue airbnb guests next door. That being said, as an airbnb customer, I could not imagine a split second renting a place with cameras checking on me. I haven't seen any so far. I may be too 2019, though.
oakfr··on Firefox 91 introduces enhanced cookie clearing
Nice feature, although I wish firefox could fix the other side of the cookie nightmare: auto-fill the (now humongous) forms we need to fill in for our cookie settings, for each website. I feel like I am applying for a mortgage a few times a day now.
oakfr··on Google employees who work from home could lose money
Am surprise by the census data for Lake Tahoe and the 25% drop in salary that goes with it. Isn’t this a super wealthy area? This is going to hurt the Googlers who where going to trade their primary home for their secondary one.
oakfr··on Google employees who work from home could lose money
« the company will not change an employee's salary based on them going from office work to being fully remote in the city where the office is located" -> that’s a huge saving for the company right there when you consider the price/sqft of offices in dense areas
oakfr··on Apps Getting Worse
"it's only +0.65% clicks but zero is outside the confidence interval! let's ship it! ten more like these and we've reached our quarterly target!!"
oakfr··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
I don't share your vision. Things are always obvious in the hindsight, but in reality, at least in Western Europe we did quite well. The challenges that governments faced were huge and numerous (if you account for social, economical, technical and political aspects).

Of course we can always do better, but the reality is that today, we have dozens of millions of people double-vaxxed here, and we're making progress.

oakfr··on Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
Interestingly, covid seems to have taught me the opposite. When covid hit, the time-to-market of a new vaccine was 10-15 years. The collective action of governments divided this number literally by ten. Despite all the bad words we've heard about bad policies and mistakes done by governments, I think we should be proud of what humankind has achieved during covid (granted, some governments have done and still do very poorly but let's not enter this kind of discussion).

As a consequence, I am quite optimistic about what we could do if the effects of climate chang were as obvious as those of covid (which unfortunately is not the case). And in that respect, I believe in both government action and the intervention of brilliant minds/leaders. We'll need (and have) both.

oakfr··on Apps Getting Worse
What do you mean by « Spotify is designed to lose money »? Also, a decrease in number of users will definitely worry Spotify and draw negative investors’ attention.
oakfr··on Apps Getting Worse
I agree. And sadly we, as end users, are subject to the frog-in-the-hot-water effect. We don’t even realize how good the app used to be.
oakfr··on Apps Getting Worse
Correct. But I would argue that they probably measure the right thing. It’s probably better for an airline to have .1% of super-angry customers than 3% of frustrated customers. At least that’s the directions that they all have taken.
oakfr··on Apps Getting Worse
Engagement metrics apply well beyond ad companies. Basically any product used by many users interacting with a UI is eligible.
oakfr··on Apps Getting Worse
Fait point. I would also add: blame the AB test culture that has creeped in everywhere. I am pretty confident that the current layout of the Spotify UI is not the result of a design team but the outcome of hundreds of back-to-back AB tests (some of them coming out positive, to the benefit of the career of the ideator)
oakfr··on Major U.K. science funder to require grantees to make papers immediately free
The problem is that careful (conference) reviews don’t scale. Large conferences end up suffering from a highly stochastic behavior where excellent work is borderline rejected on a regular basis while mediocre/incorrect work gets accepted every so often. github/arxiv are no silver bullet but offer an interesting alternative (with their own set of challenges, though).
