oaf357··on Meet your new Time Server
Don't buy it on Amazon
oaf357··on Meet your new Time Server
TLS and many encryption standards rely on accurate time. Timing is everything.
oaf357··on Meet your new Time Server
This is a rock solid device. Dude knows what he's doing. I'd like to get a 250 and add it to the NTP pools but, I love my 200. Rock solid.
oaf357··on Is Docker CLI free of charge?
For now...
oaf357··on Kris Nóva has died
I am deeply saddened by this news.
oaf357··on K8s.gcr.io will be redirect to registry.k8s.io
Especially important for folks that spun up clusters with kubeadm, kops, and Kubespray. Please read and test. We’ve tried to give folks the tools and to make K8s.gcr.io as easy to find. Policies and mutating webhooks too!
oaf357··on Ask HN: Why is there no performant remote desktop for Mac/Linux?
macOS has Screen Sharing.app that works wonderfully across 8000 miles when screen sharing Mac to Mac.

Mac to Windows is easy with RDP.

But sharing a screen, Linux to Mac or vice versa... I wish you all the best. It's wild to me too.

oaf357··on Ask HN: Do u think Linux foundation certs like CKA are useful for your career?
I think it depends where you are in your career. Is it worth it for you to shell out your money for a cert? Maybe. I know earlier in my career a Red Hat cert opened doors for me (but my employer paid for it to show team competencies). But, now it would be to prove a point or something like beta testing it.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Monitoring Hard-Disk Drives and Arrays Health in Linux in 2022?
Thank you both for the question and answer. I’ve been trying to figure out when I should be swapping disks in a RAID10 array. I’ll have to tinker with it to get it to work with my RAID controller (PERC H310) but this is exactly what I’m looking for.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Do people still use Meetup?
Not since the pandemic
oaf357··on Ask HN: Is anyone else genuinely scared that this is the start of WW3?
Not yet.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Does anyone else miss TouchID?
Yes
oaf357··on Ask HN: Why is Firefox losing marketshare and how would you save it?
I think it’s more a Mozilla’s losing mindshare problem. There’s a lot of upside at other places for the same skills Mozilla is looking for.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Where do you find your sense of purpose working in the private sector?
In my open source work.
oaf357··on Ask HN: What do you do to jump start your brain in the morning?
Have your child ask you why the sky is blue or whatever other thing happens to pop into their head.
oaf357··on Ask HN: What are options to Docker for local dev due to the licensing changes?
I have a desk with a Linux rig right behind me. I use VSCode remote environments most of the time when building containers (which runs over ssh). You could do this with a VM locally too.
oaf357··on Ask HN: How to build a light weight personal blog?
I look at it from the deployment solution backwards. I’ve run some pretty intense (for a blog) CI/CD pipelines in the past. But now there are Netlify, Vercel, and others that support a few static site generators. I use Netlify (paying customer) for all my sites now and my SSG of choice is Hugo because it is a single binary that cranks out a full blown static site in less than a second.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Do we need an easier Git?
Yes
oaf357··on Ask HN: What do you call a non-Docker Dockerfile?
You can call a dockerfile whatever you want. You'll need to specify the filename at build. But, the name really doesn't matter. You can call it umptysquat.txt and it'll build you a container.

In the wild, I've seen (case insensitive) Dockerfile (obvs), Containerfile, and Container.

oaf357··on Raspberry Pi as a router using a single network interface
Great... I just re-did my whole network with these.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Where to Learn Kubernetes?
I put together two lists. One for books and guides, the other for newsletters:

https://kubernetesreadme.com/ https://kubenews.net/

oaf357··on 145: Thoughts on Stallman, spying in tech, Istio, K8s issues with iptables, more
What?
oaf357··on The Cult of Kubernetes
Calling it a cult after growing up in one is a bit insulting. But, yes, I don't run much on my personal K8s clusters. But, I've lost count of how many problems Kubernetes has solved for folks I've worked with. It might not solve the simplicity use cases but, that's not the intended design of the tool to begin with.
oaf357··on Use Hugo Output Formats to generate Lunr index files for your static site search
I'll have to give this a try!
oaf357··on Ask HN: Does anyone still use IRC?
Red Hat does.
oaf357··on Show HN: I made a platform for journalists to “open source” their fact checking
False. Trust in journalism is built by proving reporting to be of quality over time. Not by providing a bibliography before the report ever dries.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Why does Paypal still exist?
Because it still does a lot of things small businesses want for free. Invoicing for example that is usually a cost add-on service elsewhere.
oaf357··on No Medium
I definitely want to write this. The problem is time. Would you help me write it maybe?
oaf357··on Ask HN: Are there actually any good PaaS solutions for Kubernetes?
I've started kicking the tires on DigitalOcean's Kubernetes offering. Surprisingly, it's the one I feel most comfortable with. They've made getting the cluster up and running then getting out of your way a thing and I appreciate it. It's Kubernetes without the weird cloud intracacies that make them well clouds. It's in limited preview but, if I'm kicking tires on it it can't be too far from GA. Also, in talking with some of the team members I appreciate their approach and challenges.

oaf357··on AdGuard DNS: A Privacy-Oriented DNS Server
I'm a little disappointed they abandoned CoreDNS. I was really enjoying work with it.
