o1iver··on Three Graphs About Trying and Failing
In Germany we have a clear path for those last and before last groups: apprenticeships. They are structured, widely accepted and highly respected. It seems like in the US such an alternative path is unfortunately missing (i.e. go to college or you will struggle).
o1iver··on Ask HN: What's the most promising field in A.I?
Define "most promising". I think deep learning is currently pretty hot and many people seem to think it will be very useful in the future.
o1iver··on Feds Arrest Alleged Top Silk Road Drug Seller
Looking at the reddit thread [0] referenced in the article I am really suprised about how openly those redditors are talking about illegal drug purchases (incl. personal experiences, etc). Aren't they worried that they might be investigated?

o1iver··on Jeff Bezos Is Playing Chess
Did you read the article? The theory seems clear to me...
o1iver··on Peek Inside Tesla's Robotic Factory [video]
I did an internship at Audi a few years ago and it looked exactly the same.

The one thing that was much more impressive at Audi however is that, as opposed to Tesla, where one line seems to produce one type of car, at Audi, the same line (i.e. the same robots) would sequentially work on different models. A robot might, for example, attach an A4 windshield, then a Q5 windshield, etc. That was very impressive. The required identification information (model, type, options,...) was contained on a small transmitter attached on the transporter carrying the semi-finished vehicle.

This is obviously not necessary at Tesla since they only have two models, but it was nonetheless the thing that most impressed me.

o1iver··on Paris Air Show’s Slowest Plane Could Have Biggest Impact
The video at the bottom of the OP shows that plane taking off and landing.
o1iver··on What is Microsoft smoking?
Why did Bluray loose? I love Bluray. And I buy them too...
o1iver··on Becoming your story
I was actually thinking about this today asking myself how often you have to tell yourself who you are until you become that person.

It's a kind of positive feedback loop. Until I started research at university I used to just do enough to pass well. When I started doing research I started enjoying it much more and consequently started working more. I became a hard-working person, both to myself and others. And this in turn led me to work even harder (also when it wasn't so enjoyable).

Same goes for other things like sports, community service, etc...

o1iver··on German Fascination With Degrees Claims Latest Victim: Education Minister
I guess it's the old saying of absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is very sad though!
o1iver··on German Fascination With Degrees Claims Latest Victim: Education Minister
Me too. And I would wish that those people had real integrity.
o1iver··on German Fascination With Degrees Claims Latest Victim: Education Minister
How is it that such dishonest people become leaders in our countries? I would expect those leading my country to at least have some integrity!
o1iver··on My First Recommendation to New Scientific Coders: Learn Visualization
In engineering we use a lot of Matlab.
o1iver··on Alone Together, Again
I am not exactly sure what kind of pushes you gave, but I do believe, that one should not just go with the flow. Going against the flow is what shapes you as a human being. If in doubt choose the harder option. The hard times have shaped me more as a human than the easy times.

Also a certain amount of contrast is good in life. Just going with the flow seems to dull life, removing inner conflict, conflict with others, pain, excitement...

o1iver··on SpaceX update: The engine did not explode
Hey, what book is that quote from? I can't really find anything using "never again". Thanks!
o1iver··on Vim and Vi Tips: Essential Vim and Vi Editor Skills, free on Amazon today only
Why? It's not Amazon's fault, but rather the decision of the publisher... And I guess it's your loss anyway. I had the same problem (I have to use amazon.de), but hey, better that than nothing!
o1iver··on The Myth of the Super Programmer
A lot of people have commented that they do not agree because most people could not come up with Git, invent (from other ideas) modern-day MapReduce, etc.

I don't agree that the article is wrong for those reasons. Those people who invent those things are able to do so because they have spent years learning the underlying principles. And this does not only apply to programming; it applies to any scientific field. Somebody mentioned Terry Tao; well I would say that Terry Tao is a "superstar" because he has combined talent and more importantly because he has studied maths for years.

Talent + (a lot of) practice = superstar!

Look at the story of Andrew Wiles's proof of Fermats last theorem. He is undoubtedly a talented person, but was able to complete that work because he had studied math for a long time and combined the insights of many fields into his proof. Practice and talent makes a superstar!

o1iver··on Vim as you IDE
Exactly my setup :) Although, since xmonad I don't use tmux that much anymore!
o1iver··on Samsung internal document evaluating the iPhone (translated)
No! The document shows the areas where Samsung believes there to be room for improvement. This document does not mean that "in absolutely every comparison" the iPhone finishes first.
o1iver··on ZeroMQ - Disconnects are Good for You
Sure, the REQ/REQ sockets are limited, especially because they force the Request/Reply/Request/Reply/... series. I don't think any complex applications use this. I recently built an application using DEALER/ROUTER sockets, where you can send multiple requests, without having to wait for responses, etc. Additionally, no application should rely on receiving a response, the poller he suggests solves this problem nicely (although I don't think it necessary to wrap it into send/recv methods as pyzmq offers a nice polling API).
o1iver··on Skype 4.0 for Linux
Arch Linux AUR packages available at: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=60059

I have tested it; works great!

o1iver··on Germany, Not Greece, Should Exit the Euro
What I meant with discipline is the general attitude towards spending. Germany has spent a lot of money, but they spent it smartly, building up to becoming one of the most powerful industrial nations in the world, whilst the southern countries built houses that now stand empty in the spanish ghost towns.
o1iver··on Germany, Not Greece, Should Exit the Euro
I agree with you that the German banks facilitated the spending, but the fault still lies with the countries that abused that money. You cannot blame the bank for your debt after requesting your 12th credit card!

Aside: I believe that the German banks have to live with their mistakes regarding due diligence, although even that isn't so clear as it seems that the greek authorities weren't entirely honest when it came to their financials.

o1iver··on Germany, Not Greece, Should Exit the Euro
Germany may have profited from the spending sprees of the southern nation, but it did not directly cause the problem. Lack of discipline is what caused the crisis. Germany passed difficult structural reforms in the 2000s and is now reaping the rewards, whilst the southern nations abused the availability of cheap money. Germany reformed and invested, whilst the southern nations didn't! And it is not like Germany was just sitting by doing nothing... That money going to Greece and Spain is coming from somewhere! German politicians are very hard at work keeping the German population from revolting about so much money being "transferred"!

My personal opinion is that the correct way is austerity, but not like it is being forced unto Greece at the moment. The greek economy is in shatters as is, the current austerity measures are not helping. I think the solution is that Germany should lend Greece way more money than currently so that they can build up their economy, whilst enforcing structural and governmental reform (ex: taxes must be collected, bureaucrats fired, etc)... Finally the money should be paid back over the next 40 years, as the economy recovers.

o1iver··on A few things to remember while coding in Python
I agree with your sceptisism. This is misusing a language feature, a better approach is using a decorator.
o1iver··on I have no idea what I'm doing
It sounds like you are already doing this, but now make sure that you not only answer your kids' questions, but more importantly teach them your A,B,C,D research/teaching steps! Give a man a fish, ... :)
o1iver··on I have no idea what I'm doing
And I think to answer the parent's question one can expand on your second point. I think most people don't admit to being wrong or not knowing because they 1). wrongly think of certain people as relevant or 2). they have chosen their relevant people wrongly.
o1iver··on What it takes to build great machine learning products
He said genetic programming not genetic algorithms. For the former, type and category theory are useful!
o1iver··on Show HN: Firebase, a scalable real-time backend
Really nice site! I love the UI. But please make it available for other countries too (me: Switzerland!)!
o1iver··on I'm Sure It Will Only Take You A Few Days To Code
But how does that help the customer (be it internal or external)? How is he supposed to align capital, human or financial? For example: when does he tell the marketing team to start the big launch campaign, etc?

An example would be something like a main-stream game, say Battlefield 3. The have marketing videos months in advance, they sell games in advance and by doing so they promise that the product will be available at a certain point in time. It may contain bugs, but, unlike what you say, it cannot just be whatever is ready at that time (say without support for sound, or not controls)...
