nyanpasu64··on I helped fix sleep-wake hangs on Linux with AMD GPUs
As I understand https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/agd5f/linux is Alex Deucher (amdgpu maintainer)'s personal Git tree/repo (https://docs.kernel.org/process/maintainers.html#radeon-and-...), where amdgpu changes get merged into before they reach the main Linux tree (and/or the drm/tip repo, I'm not sure their relationship).

I didn't mention in the article but the Nvidia drivers at one point would drop VRAM rather than preserving it, leading to corrupted RGB noise textures in window managers and browsers (and potential crashes though I don't think I encountered them). I suggested doing this on the AMD bug tracker (https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2362#note_20...), but the amdgpu developers weren't interested.

I once ran into a corporate laptop that had been downgraded from Windows 11 to 10, that would burn up its CPU during Modern Standby and eventually enter hibernate after burning a good fraction of its battery. The sleep study identified various PCIe devices and I tried installing drivers but they did not help. I wonder if it would've worked better on Windows 11 with stock drivers.

I've heard reports of reduced frame rate issues on laptops from DMUB/DMCUB/panel self-refresh, though your issue sounds different and I probably can't usefully debug it without a full dmesg/journalctl --system log.

Hmm, on my motherboard I had to disable spontaneous wake by adding to /etc/udev/rules.d/:

  ACTION=="add", KERNELS=="0000:00:01.1", ATTR{power/wakeup}="disabled"
And my Logitech Bolt receiver wakes multiple of my Linux computers instantly, I don't know why it doesn't do that on Windows and haven't tried doing a USB capture (and don't know what equipment I'd need to try it out, logic analyzer? Glasgow?). In the meantime I've added a rule to block that:

  ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", DRIVERS=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="046d", ATTRS{idProduct}=="c548", ATTR{power/wakeup}="disabled"

Windows says that my motherboard serial port is connected to the Pci Bus → PCI standard ISA bridge. Long live DOS!

Thanks for the video about TTM, I'll watch it when I have a chance.

Sorry I had forgotten my own article :( It is confusing that PM_SUSPEND_PREPARE and dpm_prepare share the same word.

Does `sudo systemctl enable nvidia-suspend` help?
nyanpasu64··on I helped fix sleep-wake hangs on Linux with AMD GPUs
As I understand if the GPU fails to save VRAM it drops the RAM copy(?) before restoring the GPU data structures or abandoning sleep entirely. But if it saves VRAM then crashes after the GPU is suspended, it will often fail to wake up the GPU, resulting in no monitor signal. Though I'm fuzzy on the details (and the order of operations depends on which kernel you're running).

<s>Technically it was the suspend notifier; even suspend prepare executes after swap is disabled.</s> See replies.

Update: I upgraded to an Intel Arc B570 GPU... and ran into the exact same problem on an independent driver: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/xe/kernel/-/issues/4288
nyanpasu64··on Falsehoods programmers believe about null pointers
One interesting failure mode is if (like the Linux kernel) a function returns a union of a pointer or a negative errno value, dereferencing a negative errno gives an offset (below or above zero) different from the field being accessed.

I'm wondering if it's more or less safe (from doxxers attacking individual users, or the entire service being compromised) to share location with this app vs. Lex. In any case I chose not to share location yet, and don't know if Lex is any safer (they require location).
nyanpasu64··on Show HN: I built an active community of trans people online
Took a quick look through the sources (I'm aware they're not officially intended for local builds) but haven't found anything interesting (yet). First impressions:

- The API keys are obtained using flutter_dotenv, and omitted from the Git source but trivially extractable from the Play Store APK (using a rooted phone).

- After installing the .env file and building t4t locally, I was unable to log into the Android app using a Gmail account; every attempt left the app in a not-logged-in state. The same thing happened after replacing my local app with the Play Store version? (EDIT: After restarting the app I was able to proceed?)

- (nitpick/observation) When I tap a post, the app opens the user's post history, and I try scrolling the list, the view lags behind my finger. Can't tell if it's latency, dropped frames, or both together.

For one thing, BlueSky blocks NSFW images from being embedded in RSS feeds, so I have to use third-party services like https://bluestream.deno.dev/ to generate RSS feeds which embed images in my RSS reader.
nyanpasu64··on CRT Simulation in a GPU Shader, Looks Better Than Black Frame Insertion
I'm still interested in a "selective MPRT" GPU or monitor setting, that only does black frame insertion on changed parts of an image and a "safety margin" around them. This should reduce flicker on non-moving portions of an image/still screen while keeping moving portions sharper. But this probably isn't useful for office tasks, perhaps video, and high-framerate gaming (but only games running at a lower FPS than the screen can (partially?) redraw).
nyanpasu64··on LLM abstraction levels inspired by fish eye lens
Haystack Editor uses a UI of inter-function control flow graphs, but lacks the ability to "summarize" surrounding code. (In my usage I found it was buggy, and useful for tracing a specific level of knotty code, but had issues relative to traditional IDE tabs/panes for both small files and flipping between multiple "aspects" of a system.)

nyanpasu64··on The Bluesky firehose viewed in the style of a Windows XP screensaver
I noticed that for messages facing the camera, ones further away from the screen occlude ones closer to the screen. I assume there's an alpha layering/rendering order error going on (assuming no order-independent transparency)?

nyanpasu64··on We shrunk our Javascript monorepo git size
I've experienced interruptions mid-clone (with no apparent way to resume them) when trying to clone repos on unreliable connections, and perhaps a similar issue is happening with connections between continents.
nyanpasu64··on Plastic chemical phthalate causes DNA breakage, chromosome defects, study finds
Polycarbonates have been known to leach from BPA (https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/press-releases/bpa-chemica...), I don't know if they've tightened up manufacturing or switched to non-estrogenic or non-bioactive chemicals since then.
nyanpasu64··on Plastic chemical phthalate causes DNA breakage, chromosome defects, study finds
Sadly I found a study at https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3222987/ saying that many polypropylene polyethylene products release estrogenic chemicals (IDK if it's the same as phthalate) likely from additives, including when bent/deformed. And polycarbonates are infamously made of polymerized BPA and similar chemicals (usually endocrine disruptors).

nyanpasu64··on A new book shows how the power of companies is destabilizing governance
Well they're certainly not improving life for people who will lose their housing predicated on heterosexual marriage if they transition, or attempting to murder anti-corruption activists.
nyanpasu64··on Show HN: I 3D scanned the tunnels inside the Maya Pyramid Temples at Copan
Were the tombs and other structures originally sealed in with no path to the outside world? Were there other rooms accessible for rituals without archaeologists having to excavate tunnels in the modern day?
nyanpasu64··on “Bad Apple” in Minecraft
>This recursion ends when Minecraft hits a hard limit, which by luck results in a yellow block being spawned instead of a red one.

This reminds me of the old update suppression glitch (https://mcdf.wiki.gg/wiki/Java_Edition:Update_Suppression), or the trickier population suppression (https://mcdf.wiki.gg/wiki/Java_Edition:Population_Suppressio...) which can leave the game engine in a glitched state where blocks fall instantly.
