nwzpaperman··on Tesla’s Model S Lease and Financing Program Expensive, Misleading
Pass the pipe, yo! Who would want to live on Mars? Why not build a colony in the middle of a desert with no one but moneyed acquaintances and imported indentured slaves?

Oh wait, we already did over in Dubai! Bwahaha

Mars colonization is just a novelty to obscure reality and distract people from the bankruptcy of the debt-asset based financial-political system. Aka asset-based lending

The Tesla financing gimmick is nothing more than a retail level tax credit securitization scheme of the TIF pedigree that municipalities use.

Fisker is toast, what's the over-under on HN's favorite electric car boondoggle getting pinched? What greenism acolytes don't appreciate is that deflation lowers the price of goods and services--including car and fuel prices!

Value is conserved and deflation will burn the green industry in a bright white light like ice cold water on lithium. Green energy's only hope is that Bernanke's replacement starts handing out trillion dollar tokens on street corners.

All these bright minds and no one takes the time to model assumptions of perpetual compounding growth of the economy! It's not linear, duh!

nwzpaperman··on Bitcoin up 15+ percent in 1 day
Everything is always valued in relation to something else, including bitcoin. USD/BTC is about $120.xx right now, right?

Dollars are valued against Euros, barrels of oil, rents and a six pack of beer. The same applies to everything else. When you talk about what it is worth it is always in terms of some quantity of something else.

What people will learn a few years from now is that almost every part of the human experience is a speculation; death and taxes excepted, of course!

nwzpaperman··on How Franklin Roosevelt Secretly Ended the Gold Standard
It's easy to engineer a credit expansion--inflation--in the economy when all of the real estate and stocks have been discounted--lost--80%+ off their pre-depression price levels.

Bernanke has been trying to create inflation--credit expansion--since December 2008 and even a trillion dollar unfundable deficit can't do it! Why?

Asset prices aren't cheap.

The fact that unemployment strangles wage increases-inflation--and might be enjoyed by corporates seems lost on everyone in these discussions.

It's taken trillions and billions of guarantees--insurance--, subsidized purchase programs, credits and special financing programs to take the SP500 just back to October 2007 levels. The Nasdaq is still, what, 40% off of the tech top from over a decade ago?

But wait, Apple is minting money--true-- and AMZN is still losing money! The NDX is nothing without those two favored stocks.

Correlation vs. causation, pal. Don't conflate the two!

Cheap assets and labor drive credit expansions and economic fortunes.

nwzpaperman··on US Treasury Guidance on Virtual Currencies (aka Bitcoins)
What no one, the bitcoin community included, anticipates is hundreds and thousands of competing cryptocurrencies around the world.

For time eternal, government has risen among traders to enforce commercial rules.

Currency is like electrical current. It flows and the total currency system--all users--seeks equilibrium on it's own. When you've got currency you have to fend against spouses, family, friends, external competitors, the state, lawyers and nature itself to maintain your position.

nwzpaperman··on What’s going on Reddit these days has media manipulation written all over it
Reddit has minimal barriers to churning accounts to sybil attack the community. It's all too common to hear founders trying to maximize users and accelerate growth before the long-term externalities have been considered or the stack is ready.

Some times taking your time is the best decision for the long-game.

"The Price of Information

The way I view the structure of the news industry is much more simple than the complexity everyone perceives.  You have corporate (social group) information producers like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today that gather, assimilate, translate, interpret, print and distribute information.  The defining characteristic is not the flavor of the information produced, but that they are all selling bundled products.

On the other hand, you have the blogosphere that is gathering, assimilating, translating, interpreting and selling content independently.  The closest thing to a common distribution network in the blogosphere is the RSS feed.  There are many bloggers in the finance industry selling subscriptions at and beyond the price of print publications, so we know a paid market for information can exist in the Internet ecosystem.  The remainder of bloggers are giving their information product away to maximize page views and the corresponding advertising revenue."

nwzpaperman··on The Cyprus bail-out: Unfair, short-sighted and self-defeating
Fact 1: Deposits are loans from depositor to bank. Fact 2: Deposits are accounted for as liabilities on the banks' balance sheets. Fact 3: Banks write multiple loans against each dollar deposit; it has a fancy name: fractional reserve banking. Fact 4: Most countries are now on zero reserve banking and only manage their loan portfolio size by the amount of capital they have on their balance sheets.
nwzpaperman··on The Internet is a surveillance state
A lot of the tracking technology is developing from the advertising space, but also to monetize clicks for affiliate commissions. It's the same technology applied to an adjacent market.

The throughput, latency, computing power and memory wasn't sufficient to do what we can do today a short 5-10 years ago. The hardware has advanced so much over the past decade that it is attainable at the consumer/non-sovereign level now. Anyone with a thousand bucks free monthly cash flow and the coding chops can get very far independently.

nwzpaperman··on The Internet is a surveillance state
People have control over their individual online use cases and should assume more personal responsibility for managing their online profile. It is voluntary to join the LE email spam network, FB/G privacy invasion operations, disqus commenting, etc.

It's a shame that these social networks that were intended to enable friend and family (biz in LE case) have devolved into open public access to your personal interactions. As they further infringe on the original use cases more people will leave them for alternative solutions.

nwzpaperman··on Google Kills Its RSS Subscription Browser Extension Too
I know from some of the parties that have shown interest in my company that the highest levels of media are very concerned about being not just marginalized, but trivialized.

We have made ZERO deals for, always, one or both of two reasons:

1) The investors want to control the content and under the CDA/DMCA definitions be publishers.

2) The belief that people are unwilling to pay for news.

Up until 2012, there were doubters that online subscription is the only bet the industry can make to persist. What the interested parties will absolutely never agree to is a system that they don't retain absolute control of the message with.

It is just my speculation now, but I believe they thought I wouldn't get an actual information exchange built without their resources and assistance. I did and now there is some panic because we are one break-out event away from changing the news industry forever. I say forever because people will see a different future and want that once they understand it.

After six months in open beta I know what needs to be done and it isn't pivoting. Mostly UI and colors with some feature polishing. This next iteration will polish the foundation of the nwzPaper system and then we will integrate the facilities to complete the incentive structure and adapt the article ranking as volume builds.

We will be doing some new licensing arrangements to balance the need for producers to earn something with the need for news information to be public, accessible, available and free.

As a developer, you should look at nwzPaper as a central locking agent in a distributed system.

nwzpaperman··on Federal Judge Finds National Security Letters Unconstitutional, Bans Them
Well, the US is a Republic and not a democracy. Even in the case of a direct democracy, should we have 50.1% deciding for the 100%? If only it were a trivial game it would be an easy answer!

Quoting Jefferson isn't a call to action, but a call to remember those words, the context and the inspiration. It's insightful to remember that Jefferson was the founder of a third-party known as the Democratic-Republicans.

As much as people think the world is different, the difference is really only technologically. Instead of stealing horses, people steal cars. Instead of bootlegging liquor, people run marijuana.

Instead of slave masters, we have human resources.

nwzpaperman··on Federal Judge Finds National Security Letters Unconstitutional, Bans Them
Regulated campaign finance...who writes the rules?

The problem is fundamental to the structure and it is inevitable that, over time, every government becomes tyrannical.

Thomas Jefferson made it clear for the ages, "the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

Governments are of man and man is prone to taking advantage of and abusing his or her peers.

"When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty. I am not a friend to a very energetic government."

- Thomas Jefferson

"What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."

nwzpaperman··on GitHub is getting DDoSed again
Sovereign nations do employ significant signal intelligence resources to defend their government. The Chinese are heavily invested and have been responsible for the majority of attacks on US IT infrastructure for years. It wasn't discussed openly before because the trade relations weren't degraded/ing like they are today.

In case you've missed the memo, they're threatening all of their neighbors outright with kinetic military force. Japan is no trivial country to threaten force against, so the diplomatic climate has changed and more information is being shared publicly in anticipation of an outright military conflict.

There are conflicting interests between individuals that lead to physical fights and the same applies to sovereign nations whose interests run contrary.

nwzpaperman··on GitHub is getting DDoSed again
Probably a "sovereign hacker" as non-sovereign-employed programmers are naturally aligned with the open values and creativity that github exists for.

As far as motive goes, if github can be electronically terrorized, laws to protect them and everyone from future electronic terrorism only make sense, right?

<donkey>Eee-ooooo</donkey>

Always do what you can to understand motive!
