nwvg_7257··on Automakers must build cheaper, smaller EVs to spur adoption, report says
You might be right. It says one of the only reliable PHEVs is the Toyota RAV4 prime.

Still, I would expect the hybrid Camry to be more reliable than the gas Camry. Simpler transmission, engine turns off when idle, doesn't need to rev as high because of the electric assist.

nwvg_7257··on Automakers must build cheaper, smaller EVs to spur adoption, report says
Consumer report says hybrids are more reliable than ICE and EVs https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-reliability-owner-s...

"Overall, hybrids have 26 percent fewer problems than cars powered by internal combustion engines (ICE)."

nwvg_7257··on GNU Octave 8.1
I would encourage you to try this again on Julia 1.8. Startup time has improved a lot. A few minutes seems way too long to process some images. Even plotting should happen within 20-30s now.
nwvg_7257··on Video of Tesla on Autopilot Crashing into Stopped Truck at 75mph
This is a black truck, facing sideways in a lane, with no reflective surfaces of any kind, at night. Why is it surprising that a car hit it?
nwvg_7257··on US Series I Savings Bonds Now Yielding 7.12%
This doesn't mean what people think it means. They adjust the inflation rate every 6 months https://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/research/indepth/ibonds... .

Right now it yields 7.12% because the last inflation number was really high, but once inflation goes back to normal, the yield will be much lower.

nwvg_7257··on I Got a 'Mild' Breakthrough Case
This is NOT true. https://www.nytimes.com/article/breakthrough-infections-covi...

"after an outbreak among vaccinated and vaccinated workers at the Singapore airport, tracking studies suggested that most of the spread by vaccinated people happened when they had symptoms"

The vaccines substantially help to reduce spread. Doesn't eliminate it, but obviously something a hospital would want to require.

nwvg_7257··on Pkg.jl telemetry should be opt-in
You are not sending telemetry right now. That is a feature which will be activated in the upcoming 1.5 release. It will display a notification.
nwvg_7257··on How the Iowa Caucuses Became an Epic Fiasco for Democrats
tl;dr of the article:

1. The app was buggy and had a terrible roll-out 2. The people in the backup call center couldn't use 2FA because they didn't have their phones 3. Someone posted the phone number for the backup reporting system on 4chan. 4. Individual caucus centers were manually calculating the 36 numbers they needed to report, making errors and also not always following the rules.

For those outside the US, note this shouldn't reflect on the entire voting system. Caucuses, which are rare, are run by party volunteers. Primaries are run by the government.

nwvg_7257··on JuliaLang: The Ingredients for a Composable Programming Language
Couple comments on the Debugger situation:

1. Debugger.jl is A LOT smoother if you run it in compiled mode, which is a checkbox in the Juno interface. I've found that stepping to next line is instant in compiled mode, but takes forever without it.

2. Infiltrator.jl is great at what it's designed for, which is to dump you in a REPL deep within a call stack and let you see what's going on. But, Debugger in compiled mode also does this well.

nwvg_7257··on Iowa Democrats Should Have Known Better Than to Use an App
Why on earth did they make an app which they didn't even have time to get approved? This could have been done easily with a website. Honestly, they could have used Google Forms. A secure, off the shelf, and much cheaper option would have be to setup a G Suite workplace, mail security tokens to the caucus leaders, have them make accounts on a computer, and submit the results through a form.
nwvg_7257··on Faulty Iowa App Was Part of Push to Restore Democrats’ Digital Edge
Insane. "It was so rushed, they said, that there was no time to get it approved by the Apple store. Had it been, it might have proved far easier for users to install. Instead, the app had to be downloaded by bypassing a phone’s security settings, a complicated process for anyone unfamiliar with the intricacies of mobile operating systems, and especially hard for many of the older, less tech-savvy caucus chairs in Iowa.

The app also had to be installed using two-factor authentication and PIN passcodes."

nwvg_7257··on Kansas City is first major city in U.S. to offer no-cost public transportation
Not really a major city, but Chapel Hill has done this for a long time. Bus service is frequent and reliable, and is used by people from all walks of life. High income professors and scientists will be on the same bus as the poor.

It seems paradoxical that making the service free would lead the rich to use it, but it's good quality and receives substantial funding from the area's high property taxes. There's no stigma to the bus in Chapel Hill since everyone uses it.

nwvg_7257··on Americans Are Moving at the Lowest Rate on Record
Agreed. I am also carless, but I wouldn't want to move to San Fran. as it's much too expensive.

You should for sure consider other places in Cali. like San Diego, which has perfectly good public transit, but I would also consider the DC area, Austin, Chapel Hill (free and frequent bus service), etc.
