nwellinghoff··on It's not cheating if you write the video game solver yourself
Ahh but can you beat a master without using the program?
nwellinghoff··on Apple has locked me in the same cage Microsoft's built for Windows 10 users
Dude the keyboard case with trackpad… they should let you put macOS on it. The ipad is worthless with iOS.
nwellinghoff··on Australian whose blood saved 2.4M babies dies
What a kind and giving person. Rest in peace James.
nwellinghoff··on Apple files emergency motion to become defendant in US vs. Google [pdf]
I think most of us agree that this would be vastly better. Problem is how to get it done with the establishment in place.
nwellinghoff··on Tesla closes loophole that let Kia owners charge on Superchargers
Maybe some EE will step up and make a dongle that converts kia to a fake tesla plug :) “How is the same id number charging at 100 places at the same time?!”
nwellinghoff··on Trapped in the dark for 35 hours – Red Sea dive-boat survivors tell of escapes
Makes sense if the glass is perfectly vertical, air can’t escape and force is applied from the top. But if you capsize a glass by slightly turning it on its side such that most of it sinks and the air escapes by water displacement you would get some compression on the remaining air but its unclear how much.
nwellinghoff··on Show HN: I made an open-source laptop from scratch
Best 5 grand they ever spent. Byran your cross discipline knowledge is amazing. Well done!

Quick question, are your parents in technology and science or are you self taught? Always like to hear about the backgrounds that create the environment for something like this to come together.

nwellinghoff··on Trapped in the dark for 35 hours – Red Sea dive-boat survivors tell of escapes
How is that? It was at surface pressure and then rolled over.
nwellinghoff··on I ditched the algorithm for RSS
On ios it does not do that. When I click on the original source link it replaces minifeeds page in the current tab. I can the ln click back and it does take me back to minifeed but then I cant click back again to get back “one more” to the minifeed index.
nwellinghoff··on I Ditched the Algorithm for RSS–and You Should Too
When you “open original to view full content” and then use browser back to get to your page, the back history is removed and you can’t click back again to get to your main page. Makes it hard to navigate. Love the site.
nwellinghoff··on 43K fewer drivers on Manhattan roads after congestion pricing turned on
This seems to be the goto method for most cities now. Got something that isn’t working anymore or the public needs more of it? Just start charging for it and make it a revenue source!
nwellinghoff··on TikTok tells staff impacted by wildfires to use sick hours if they can't work
That would be next level corp spyware. Can you point to a enterprise offering that sells that?
nwellinghoff··on In my life, I've witnessed three elite salespeople at work
52 bucks for the paperback! That price is a felony!
nwellinghoff··on From Pegasus to Predator – The evolution of commercial spyware on iOS [video]
1) Software defined radio. You basically hook up a IMSI backed by a internet connection.

2) That is a good example. Much harder to execute. I would argue in that case that everything is totally compromised. But if the hardware vendors provided a low level interface where one could read and write firmware etc. directly. One could do simple binary comparison analysis.

The point still stands. Figuring out what malware is doing is hard. Detecting that there is something in your system that wasn't there before shouldn't be hard. If the hardware vendors wanted to provide low level mechanisms to make the process easier. Its totally in the realm of the possible.

E.g. the main responder to this thread makes it seem like a impossible task even for dedicated security defense groups. But with just two mechanisms 1) network analysis 2) low level ability to read and write firmware/persistent storage. Its totally possible and straightforward.

nwellinghoff··on From Pegasus to Predator – The evolution of commercial spyware on iOS [video]
Why are more people not saying this? At the end of the day malware is only useful if it can send information out. So its by nature, totally detectable.
nwellinghoff··on Why are Americans paying so much more for healthcare than they used to?
How do you find a doctor that operates like this?
nwellinghoff··on Billionaires Have Sidestepped a Tax Aimed at the Rich
That’s what really blows my mind. Why aren’t all thresholds automatically indexed to inflation by default. Especially in tax matters!
nwellinghoff··on California teacher dies from suspected rabid bat bite
Yeah this is the problem. And there is NO way to bypass the system and just get the vaccine if you want it. The only place that will give it to you is the ER. Thus forcing a 15k payment or a very large deductible payment. But yet, you can go to your vet and get it for your dog for 20 bucks. The u.s. system is totally jacked.
nwellinghoff··on Ultra-low-latency, batching and concurrent queue for IPC in Java
Interesting. But how do you ensure a worker that picks up a task does not pause on gc as well?
nwellinghoff··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
I don’t know why but this made me laugh out loud. Stupid freaking gaming chairs.
nwellinghoff··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
I second this. Bought one of these for my girlfriend so she could do art work. It got used for a few weeks and now just sits in the drawer. 1300 bucks wasted. Then of course I was like “well if I could run macos virtualized on it it could be a mini laptop”. But nooo the Apple gods forbid this. Total waste of space.
nwellinghoff··on Ultra-low-latency, batching and concurrent queue for IPC in Java
I don’t get it. How is this advantageous as it’s limited to one machine? Why wouldn’t you just have one jvm running multiple threads? What is the point of having multiple jvm processes interacting through this ring? Can someone enlighten me?
nwellinghoff··on How Fast Does Java Compile?
Seems easy enough to do a quick fix for. Just add a option to maven that goes straight into compile and does nothing else. Would be good for local dev. However as we all know maven does much more than this and server side ci/cd process is what really slows your other team members down (if its slow)
nwellinghoff··on Hackers use ZIP file concatenation to evade detection
You could have just done ssh reverse shell to a public jump server you control? Might have been easier.
nwellinghoff··on Google CEO says more than a quarter of the company's new code is created by AI
They probably have ai that scans existing human written code and auto generates patches and fixes to improve performance or security. The 25% is just a top level stat with no real meaning without context.
nwellinghoff··on New Windows driver signature bypass allows kernel rootkit installs
Can’t believe people have not pointed out the biggest reason of them all. Its the most widely deployed desktop os across rich targets (corporations). A lot of time and investment goes into cracking it.
nwellinghoff··on Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform
Wow this thing has everything under the sun it. Anyone know the unit cost?
nwellinghoff··on System76 Thelio Astra: High-End ARM64 Developer Desktop
Man is that db-15 port on the back of that thing? Lol.

I want one of these just to be different and cool.

Btw the article website is so plastered with ads its totally unusable on mobile. Joke level bad.

nwellinghoff··on Study offers clues into when and why mosquitoes bite
For me I seem to have noticed that if you have thicker body hair you sure get bit less. My gf says “they like me”. No babe, just like me they like your shaved legs.

Seriously though. When they land on my hairy leg they are quickly detected and dispatched.

nwellinghoff··on Solar will get too cheap to connect to the power grid
You also have to consider the material cost. RO membranes require continuous maintenance , are expensive, and generate a massive amount of brine waste water. So while having cheap energy definitely helps, there are many expensive problems with RO filtering at scale.
