nvegater··on Zed DeltaDB
A lot of haters in the comments, but I think it’s a bit too much negativity.

It’s true that they could focus on polishing the edit experience, but given that I rarely code anymore by hand, I have some doubts that it’s future proof to do that.

I think is not a bad bet trying to innovate in the LLM-coding space. Looking forward to try deltaDB and I hope it works outside of Zed !

nvegater··on Better Auth is joining Vercel
how is this related to better auth ? In my understanding, keycloak and better auth are fundamentally different. I would compare keycloak more with Ory for example.
nvegater··on Why Experience Defines Intelligence
Thank you ! I actually think real time weight update is theoretically possible while also avoiding messing up the network. Would be super useful if we figure out how to do that. That would enhance LLMs closer to real intelligence if we follow Sutton’s definition
nvegater··on How to Lead in a Room Full of Experts
Yes, and there is one trick I’ve learned instead of explicitly pulling the ‘I’m the lead’ card (which is valid, but not always the best move).

Present the decision in terms of its consequences — consequences that fall on you as the leader, not on others. You want to make clear that the accountability for the outcome rest with you and that others are "safe".

What usually happens when I do this is that the team defers to me to make the decision cause they recognize my point.

That way, you preserve alignment and authority without eroding trust, because the team sees it’s not about wielding power, but about owning the consequences no one else should or can carry.

nvegater··on A Humble Blog Post
I want to start writing again. Maybe someone finds it interesting. Happy to hear your thoughts (good or bad ones).
nvegater··on Trump wins presidency for second time
I see this as oversimplification. US Tech faces hard regulations too (fintech, healthcare etc...). Also Regulation is not that big of a bump in EU. GDPR simplified rules across 27 different national laws and forced new innovations in privacy. Also Spotify, SAP, Adyen all started in small markets, as counterexamples. The main reasons why USA is ahead I think are the historical advantages (internet, personal computer), the network effects created by the historical advantages and the VC ecosystem. Also the culture for risk tolerance.
nvegater··on Life is not a story
Humans experience the world as a story, but that is not necessarily the most human way to wrap a life around as you are implying. In some cases there are more powerful frameworks. For example Hitler is wrapped (by most of the world at least) around the damage and pain he caused not around his story. Stories are mostly fine, but thinking that we should strive for that to being the main perspective is limiting.
nvegater··on Vue 3.5 released
Ok then the parent is talking about those situations (forms and user editable fields) not about state in general in the library, correct ? If that’s the case, weird comparison.
nvegater··on Vue 3.5 released
> In Vue you can just change a property deep inside the model layer and the view updates

I never used vue for production apps, but my feeling tells me this could be a problem when the app becomes big. If you change a prop deep inside the model layer the chances of triggering an unintentional view update are higher? By using setters, you're essentially creating a more structured and controlled way of updating your application's state. But I have the react googles on, maybe I am missing something :)

nvegater··on Barcelona will eliminate tourist apartments
A lot of People in “colder” countries with higher purchasing power (specially in Europe) still want to move to Barcelona now that they can work remotely. I wonder how this fact affects the prices compared to tourism apartments.
nvegater··on LiveView Is Best with Svelte
The build times for react are not a problem at all.
nvegater··on LiveView Is Best with Svelte
I honestly don’t understand how’s this different from react server components with nextjs but with less features? It seems like the same thing but with an even clearer border between server/client components and therefore missing all the optimizations (like streaming). Like islands architecture but made out of different technologies, is my understanding correct ? I would appreciate some feedback :)
nvegater··on Hyperscript
It looks like a shorter and more specific syntax for things you can already do with vanilla stuff. In theory more tricky but faster to develop for one person (something like tailwind for JS). I find tailwind makes me develop faster than css but is a bit more tricky to get started on existing tailwind components than in just CSS components.
nvegater··on Show HN: React-magic-motion, a package to automatically animate your components
The defaults are opinionated but also minimalistic, I like this! Props on the simplicity!
nvegater··on Sessionic: A cross-browser extension to save, manage, restore tabs and sessions
Maybe something like a distributed DB where each different browser is a DB to sync with the other Browsers/Db’s ? I know this can be achievable with Tauri (a standalone app) and gunjs in a relatively straightforward way
nvegater··on Show HN: Puck – Open-source visual editor for React
This looks very nice ! How would you compare it with slatejs, tiptap or lexical ? Is this only for layouts but not for content ? (Would it be very hard to include some rich text and make it work like a cms with rich text editing?)
nvegater··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
Good point. As non native speaker I thought reach was related to a quantity but that was wrong. Thanks for the clarification.
nvegater··on Sam Altman goes before US Congress to propose licenses for building AI
I think by "widespread use" he means the reach of the AI System. Dangerous analogy but just to get the idea across: In the same way there is higher tax rates to higher incomes, you should increase regulations in relation to how many people could be potentially affected by the AI system. E.G a Startup with 10 daily users should not be in the same regulation bracket as google. If google deploys an AI it will reach Billions of people compared to 10. This would require a certain level of transparency from companies to get something like an "AI License type" which is pretty reasonable given the dangers of AI (the pragmatic ones not the DOOMsday ones)
nvegater··on Alternative to Vercel without losing vercel features
"The goal of OpenNext is to create an open source, framework agnostic, serverless adapter for Next.js"

OpenNext is currently built for AWS but they plan to support any functions as a service platform.

Is this really "open". It seems to me that by "open" they mean, outside of Vercel and inside Amazon. What do you think ? Has someone used it ?

nvegater··on Agile Is the Spoiled Child of a Decade of Easy Money
I agree with the sentiment in a sprint basis. But after 20-30 (hopefully less) sprints some patterns start to emerge out of the metrics and some consistency builds up in the team or teams (because every team is more or less an atomic unit, so it sort of “scales”). Those are imo the real advantages. You could say that there are other methods with which you can gather patterns, build up consistency and scale an organization but I don’t know of any method as straightforward and simple (although very faulty) as agile.

In a startup with 3-4 people is obviously most of the time not a good idea to stick to all agile rituals, but even in a small organization there are things to mimic from agile processes.

nvegater··on Thoughts on Svelte
Last year I wrote a comparison between Sveltekit and React with focus on Typescript and Graphql. What I didn't like particularly was that for-loops had no type inference [1]. Until this changes there is no reason for me to use Sveltekit in big projects. Typesafety is very important and nothing beats react on that.

nvegater··on Llama.cpp: Port of Facebook's LLaMA model in C/C++, with Apple Silicon support
Amazing. Thank you very much !
nvegater··on Ask HN: What is your favorite front end state management solution?
Recoil for single page apps. As simple as context but more readable. For another app the url was used as a single source of truth, so kind of a global state. The components just called useQueryParams.

For multi page apps (e.g. with nextjs) I’ve never used a global state manager. Next-auth, useReducer and react query are enough until now.

nvegater··on JSX Mail: Ending All Your Problems When Creating Email Templates
It probably targets developers that learned web development while learning React. It is at least a good idea for them. I think jsx-email wants to be the jsx version of mjml.
nvegater··on JSX Mail: Ending All Your Problems When Creating Email Templates
It works around the limitations by introducing custom components that are widely supported by multiple email clients[0]. Currently only 3: Button, Group and Image. It solves at least that and it seems to be scalable to build more components. In my opinion JSX is a great template language, I'm happy to use that abstraction, even though the setup is a bit annoying.

nvegater··on Preact Signals: a reactive state primitive that is fast by default
I think of signals as recoiljs atoms or svelte stores. Glad this approach is slowly popping up more and more in different places.

nvegater··on The Anonymous collective has leaked the database of Nestlé. Leaked 10GB data
People in Russia will not starve, they're just getting poorer without reaching hunger (can cite some sources if you want). Of course letting them starve (for too long) is the end for Putin, so of course he won't let that happen and it won't happen with the current measures.
nvegater··on The Anonymous collective has leaked the database of Nestlé. Leaked 10GB data
There are no hypotheticals. It is clear and understood that the civil Russian population will suffer the sanctions the most. I don't understand what you mean by calling that hypothetical collateral damage.

Sanctions making Putin retreat seems more hypothetical to me. Targeting civilians on purpose to try to change a dictators mind is naive and it underestimates the power of a dictatorship inside its own country. Of course seizing foreign assets of Russian oligarchs has to be done, quitting projects with Russian companies as well and many other things, just don't try to affect the middle-low Russian class to create difficulties, it will only mess with the people and it wont damage Putin's regime.

I also want maximum damage on Russia. Offer Middle-low class Russians something WAY better than what they cant get in their country, and make it easy for them to go outside of Russia to get it. IMO that causes more damage than the sanctions (short and long term) but we will never know.
