numo16··on Amber Alert: Californians confused, angry and startled
> It seems absurd that there's no setting in iOS to disable this nonsense without calling up the phone company

There is: Settings > Notifications > Government Alerts (at the bottom)

numo16··on Amber Alert: Californians confused, angry and startled
It also exists for severe weather situations. Got a tornado warning alert on my phone in June in my area advising to take shelter (had 5 tornadoes touch down in the area that night). I thought it was pretty cool, since I don't watch TV and didn't think to check the weather.
numo16··on How Long it Takes to Learn a Dvorak Keyboard
Thanks for the link, definitely something I'll be making use of. I just started the switch over to colemak (http://colemak.com/) yesterday, and these kinds of tools will definitely be helpful in gaining the muscle memory for the layout.
numo16··on Just got an Amber Alert on my Phone
Perhaps that's why they ask you to turn them off before the show and not just silence them
numo16··on Just got an Amber Alert on my Phone
> I honestly can't think of a better way of informing people of urgent events (natural disasters, mainly)

I know that recently, at least in my area (Flint, MI), they started pushing tornado warnings (tornado touchdown confirmed) to smartphones in a way similar to the Amber Alert OP discusses. It was actually pretty cool the night in June, when we had 5 tornadoes touch down in the area, since I don't have TV and was too busy to notice the weather outside to check the weather online.

numo16··on NSA director heckled on stage at Black Hat security conference
I had a Philosophy of Ethics course during my C.S. undergrad that was actually taught by a former member of the Michigan House of Representatives. He would discuss the kind of things he had to make decisions on during his time there, regarding the different points of view he had to take into account from an ethics perspective, and then have an open dialog with the class to discuss the different facets of the subject. Was a very interesting class that gave some interesting perspective.

numo16··on Qt 5.1 Released With Android and iOS Technology Previews
Qt seems to be working alright for Autodesk Maya and Mudbox. They migrated the UI to it and everyone I've talked to that use these on various platforms don't really have any complaint about the UI (especially since they can use Qt, PyQt, etc... for building plugins).
numo16··on Python Tools for Visual Studio
If this project isn't still in development, Microsoft does treat NodeJS as a first class citizen in Web Matrix[1] and is definitely worth a look.

numo16··on Python Tools for Visual Studio
I find that a little odd, as my mid-2008 macbook seems to run VS2012 pretty smoothly even through parallels. I have to wonder what else you might be running simultaneously.

~90 miles per day round-trip to work, for me. It would be nice if I lived close enough to the office for an EV to be useful/practical.

numo16··on The dying platform: .Net
Since you've been away from .NET for a while, you may have missed nuget[1], which makes it super easy to incorporate open source .NET libs into your projects directly from visual studio.

numo16··on McCain working on bill to allow for 'a la carte' cable TV packages
Generally, from what I have read/heard, the companies make deals amongst each other and with municipalities to be the sole provider for an area. If this is correct, then the companies are actually working together, just not for the benefit of the consumer.
numo16··on Gun Homicide Rate Down 49% Since 1993 Peak; Public Unaware
Agreed. I live in Flint, MI (#1 in violent crime, 2 years running) and have yet to personally see any violent crime first hand, and I live just north of the worst part of the city.
numo16··on Humble Double Fine Bundle is available now
Played through it on Xbox 360 when it first came and I had a lot of fun with it. A lot of people criticized double fine for throwing in RTS elements that weren't present in the demo, but I thought it was pretty fun all around.
numo16··on Microsoft prepares U-turn on Windows 8
I've heard this a few times from people and the really baffling part of it for me is how many people still shut down their computers these days. Maybe I'm a special case, but for laptops I close the lid and it sleeps until I need it again and for desktops, I get up and walk away and it goes to sleep until I need it again. The only time it shuts down or restarts is when an update requires it.
numo16··on Why isn’t there a glut of good software engineers?
I don't know about how other schools approached programming careers, but I know my school tried to make it out like you had to be some crazy math genius in order to do basic programming. Compound that with the fact that my school didn't offer any programming classes for people to even see if it was something they would be interested in, and we're left with me being the lone software engineer in from my school for the past several years. They scared everyone else away.
numo16··on Why isn’t there a glut of good software engineers?
> The main problem seems to be that government contracting is not a regular market

I have to wonder if it would be come a more regular market if companies weren't required to drug-test all of their employees in order to do more than $100,000 of Federal contract work [1]. I'm sure their are companies out there that would prefer not to compromise their employees' privacy for the sake of work they might not need.

numo16··on E-Cigarettes Bring Smokers Back Inside, For Now
I'm just curious, do you eat potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, or cauliflower? If so, you are already ingesting that evil, evil nicotine[1]. In all honesty, I doubt we would be put more at risk by inhaling any trace amounts of nicotine in secondhand vap than we would from interacting with everything else in our everyday lives. Hell, sitting in front of this computer and typing this response is probably shortening my lifespan more than a minuscule amount of nicotine.

Definitely agree with this. I, personally, do quite a bit of mixology and cooking as my non-computer based creative outlet. I get a lot of enjoyment out thinking through various combinations of ingredients and how they would interact with each other to create something new and interesting.

numo16··on Why your games are made by childless, 31 year old white men
> The fact that they are childless indicates that they don't have time to have children

Or they don't want them...It may be anecdotal, but I know a good many of people around age (26) who don't really want to have kids

numo16··on Why your games are made by childless, 31 year old white men
It was my "dream job" to work in some big name game studio one day. Then, after reading studio horror stories and working in other normal programming jobs, I realized that I had all this extra time outside of work that I could use to make games on my own terms. That made the decision easy for me :)
numo16··on Programmer? Back Pain? Try archery
I think the main thing about archery that may have helped OP is that it requires you to have decent posture to steady your shot and have proper form, which would lead to less muscle aches, one would think.
