nullandvoid··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
I can't think of a single piece of software that has cloud syncing, for free, with no option for payment.

I'm not sure who is running it (hopefully some well funded academic group), but it restores me faith in humanity a little every time I press sync and don't get CTA'd to sign up for some subscription.

Amazing tool, kudos to the devs, and if there other comes a time where payment is required, I would be happy to chip in with the above being said.

nullandvoid··on MelonJS – a fresh and lightweight JavaScript game engine
I use phaser on client side, then matter.js for physics + nengi.js for networking (https://github.com/timetocode/nengi).

I only have experience with 2d (so it might not be useful to you, but perhaps will others), where typically it's a worse experience for the player to have CSP (client side prediction) at-least in a fast paced game, as for example a player behind a wall can more clearly see something missed them, yet they still got hit.

The way I do things (and I've seen is common across other "io" games), is "CSP" only for particular actions (such as your own rotation, or swinging your own weapon), but otherwise just let the client move in step with the server in terms of any physics entities etc.

nullandvoid··on Windows 11 update added 'Search' label to taskbar search button – how to remove?
Devils advocate I upgraded last week (after holding off for a long time) and it's working well for me. Memory management seems much better with WSL / in general (not having to restart nearly as much). I make use of virtual desktops a lot, and the no animation when switching between them is a nice QOL, but one I couldn't go back on.

You can make everything less hostile quickly by removing the search bar, and removing the "search web" feature in start menu etc in a couple of minutes.

nullandvoid··on Show HN: A highly opinionated, fully functional Obsidian vault
I saved this quote, thanks (couldn't find an original reference as someone else notes). This resonated pretty well with the hours I've put into side projects, and the philosophy I try to maintain to keep moving forward.
nullandvoid··on Musk’s inner circle worked through weekend to cement Twitter layoff plans
This is a nice change, I refused to click on any twitter links before. Feels weird scrolling twitter without the terrible log in CTA every action.
nullandvoid··on Turbopack, the successor to Webpack
To throw another in the ring, I recently stumbled on https://github.com/t3-oss/create-t3-app. Lots of buzzword tech in there, but the setup looks very interesting.

Looks like blitz is tRPC + next auth?

nullandvoid··on Getting Out of a Rut
I see you mention over indulging gaming. This provides one of the biggest dopamine hits, and if you're playing non stop everything else will be a bit dull (including the stuff you need to do in order to have a base happiness- exercise, eating well)

Pasting in a previous comment I put on here (I have no affiliation) ---

Purchase + install "cold turkey", you can set time blocks to play, or block months out entirely.

I used to game all the time, I now block games for 2-3 months, have a good weekend blow out and repeat.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: Why don't I see gold at the end of the remote working rainbow?
That doesn't sound healthy.

Im no social butterfly, and understand initial boundaries are important, however stone walling everyone at work makes for a miserable work place for your colleagues, and for yourself (due to all interactions being ultimately pointless beyond strictly business).

nullandvoid··on Framework Laptops Now Offering Refurbished Products
Unfortunately I require something portable as I'm travelling a lot, and that's not something I can easily chuck in my laptop bag!

Good to know though play nicely with eGPUs though for future reference.

nullandvoid··on Framework Laptops Now Offering Refurbished Products
+1 I really wanted a framework laptop, but had to go with Asus M16 in the end due to size limitations.

A dedicated GPU is another missing feature for me. I'm hoping with how powerful iGPU are becoming (amd 7000 looks promising) this should be a non issue hopefully by next purchase.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: Anyone has a spouse/partner who doesn't work a full-time job?
Currently I work 3 days per week, and pay all the bills for both my girlfriend and I.

We previously (a few months ago) lived in UK, where she had a job alongside me. An opportunity has arose where we now both work in a different country (however only I kept my remote job).

My money arrangement is to have a shared account where all of my wages go.

Do the budgeting together and give your parner free reign over, spending seems the only fair way.

I'm hoping freelance will take off within 6 months or so for her, so she will also earn some income (albeit perhaps inconsistent), but either way I can sustain us both for a while like this (and was always the plan, if worst case and she cannot make any money).

Would highly recommend if financially possible. We're putting (much) in savings, but on the other side, we're using our prime years to build our passion projects.

nullandvoid··on The 'Egg' Laptop
Nice project, really like this other one as-well https://www.ikejima.org/projects/2016092-digital-timeglass.h..., have it saved to build something similar when I decide to pick back up building stuff with my Arduino.
nullandvoid··on How to build a personal webpage from scratch
Can vouch for cloudflare pages for frontend for an easy static frontend deployment experience. Manages HTTPS, configuring deployment on pushes to repo, connecting to custom domain etc all with a few clicks.
nullandvoid··on The next century of computing
Liking the theme of a return to simplicity.

It's a view I unfortunately believe isn't likely given the prior art of escalating complexity in both software (think web, OS) and hardware (modern CPU's / GPU's).

However I guess there are many exceptions to this rule though. Further back I can think of the creation of high level programming languages, or more recently the progress in AI tooling to assist various crafts.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: How do you cope/work with endless cycle of webdev?
My advice is pick a framework you can get on with (and has mass market adoption, look at developer surveys) and stick with it. This likely means Vue/ react, you don't need to worry about all these other ones for a little while if it's causing you stress. This space is maturing, react has remained a solid choice since I started working with it many years ago now (yes it has warts, but so do most alternatives).

Regarding typescript, I think you'll need to get over your concerns if you want to remain in the web space. If you check any developer surveys it's only getting more popular. I doubht its going anywhere soon, and if it does the syntax will be likely be extremely similar, its a pretty natural way to add typing to JS.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: How do you deploy your weekend project in 2022?
Cloudflare pages for hosting my create-react-app react frontend (free, handles https for me also). Set up to auto deploy on push to repo (cloudflare makes this really easy through their UI)

Digital ocean droplet for hosting my typescript node backend (api) server. Sqlite for storage ($5/mo). Right now I'll typically just git pull when I want to redeploy, however depending on the project I may setup a docker compose script to spin up containers, that gets automatically run on commit to main.

I let cloudflare handle DNS for free also, and have it proxy to sideproject.com / api.sideproject.com for ddos mitigation.

Auth0 free tier for handling auth between.

nullandvoid··on Citibank may lock bank accounts for 45 days if breach suspected
Am I an anomaly here?

We're not money savvy people particularly, however my girlfriend and I both have 3-4 bank accounts (UK based, it takes <1 hour to setup a brand new bank, from start to finish).

We have a couple of traditional banks, and then also some more modern "internet" only banking (great for travel with their zero conversion fees, and more granular tracking of spending).

This seems to be the norm between all my friends also.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: What should I do next for my career?
Purchase + install "cold turkey", you can set time blocks to play, or block months out entirely.

I used to game all the time, I now block games for 2-3 months, have a good weekend blow out and repeat.

This has been working pretty well for over a year now, highly reccomend.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: Any great books about technical writing?
I've always found DigitalOcean to be a source of very high quality tutorials / documentation, and therefore think you can't go wrong with familiarising yourself with their guidelines https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/digitalocea....
nullandvoid··on Ask HN: Why has quality of YouTube reduced drastically?
The only sane way to consume YouTube these days.

I also just manage a curated list of channels and consume via RSS, with YT perpetually blocked, short of a few re-review days per year.

nullandvoid··on Publishing your work increases your luck
The saying "luck favours the prepared" comes to mind here. Do the work, and if you're lucky the rewards will come.
nullandvoid··on Developer's Guide to SaaS Compliance
On this note, is there a guide for what minimum the average Joe SaaS developer needs to complete before taking money through a SaaS (E.G setting up X type of business entity, getting insurance)? I pay tax to the UK, so any info for that would be fantastic.
nullandvoid··on I’m going to miss you, but I am taking a sabbatical
I think burnout is unique to an individual, and can simply be bought on by prolonged working on something (anything) that doesn't deliver the results you expect.

If the blog poster expected to be happy, or to have riches for example, and neither occurred at the level they expect (especially now 24 years in) burn out occurs.

nullandvoid··on ReVanced
I use ublock origin + sponsorblock + ddg privacy extension, and haven't had ads on YouTube in years

Also you can just use invidious on mobile (and presumably on your TV) for the same experience (minus the sponsor / merch flogging skips which are fantasic)

nullandvoid··on Show HN: Lunar XDR Brightness control
Also whether you're wearing your blue light defense moisturizer (context - https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-10-20-streamer-valky...)
nullandvoid··on Ask HN: How to prove that astrology works?
Use the scientific method, and people here will listen. That means reproducible evidence from a reputable source.
nullandvoid··on Show HN: download all your [Liked] videos from TikTok for safekeeping
IWhen a friend has shared a video, they try to get you to sign up with this horrible collection of "similar reccomended" content (90% sexually suggestive thumbnails other 10% really dumb clickbait) every time. If for that reason alone I will never join and have my brain rotted by their algorithms.
nullandvoid··on Play Half-Life in the Browser
If you go full-screen this shortcut won't close the tab (had the same issues with other browser games I've played in the past).
nullandvoid··on Why not hire part-time developers?
I've just gone down to 4 days pro-rata, and have enjoyed the additional time to work on my own projects, and get on top of any chores (and honestly sometimes just re-charge).

From this point forward I'm attempting to optimize for personal development and fulfillment through building more things that tickle my own intellectual itches, rather than a bigger job title.

nullandvoid··on University students are living in cheap hotels to “cheat” landlords
What a non story, shock it's better value for money getting a hotel insfead of renting a place, when you're only staying over twice a week..
