nudded··on Ask HN: OSX Package Management
there have been recent developments over an alternative, and http://github.com/mxcl/homebrew seems to be a very nice one.

it's still growing, but seems to be a viable alternative to macports

  !!:s/sl/ls
executes last command but replaces first occurence of sl with ls. (can also be written as ^sl^ls)

  !!:gs/sl/ls
same as above, but now global replace
nudded··on I bought a CD, not a licensing agreement
The copyright law[1] applies to everything that is created which has a original form and is in itself original (ergo not a copy).

Hence the music you buy is protected by this law.

Hence you can not ask the author to get a spare cd. Since he's not obliged to give you one. Also everything you want to do with the music is determined by the law.

[1] i am talking about the law that protects original creations, not the one where you have to pay for a patent.

nudded··on Compiling Ruby, RubyGems, and Rails on Snow Leopard
you could actually do the same in /usr/local. all you need to do is install all packages to their own folder (eg /usr/local/custom/ruby-1.8.7) and then symlink the binary to /usr/local/bin.

http://github.com/mxcl/homebrew/tree/ is a package manager that tries to do just that

nudded··on Compiling Ruby, RubyGems, and Rails on Snow Leopard
i don't see a difference between /opt and /usr/local , I just think it's a matter of preference
nudded··on Upgrading to Snow Leopard
What were the exact results of your tests? also was a self compiled version of ruby faster?
nudded··on C64 Visual Debugger
his visualisation of the memory is just brilliant. Broader view to see what memory is being used, and then zoom in to see the specific values and addresses.

Very clever indeed

I thought http://www.ruby-doc.org has docs for the 1.9 library (also for the 1.8.7 and 1.8.6)
nudded··on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Now Available (Delivery on Aug. 28th)
> and the prominent featuring of those two products as a component of a whole new version of an OS makes it feel like a service pack.

point me to a page that only displays those 2 updates as the main features. In my browser Apple is clearly marketing the 64-bit, Grand Central Dispatch and OpenCL as the main reasons to upgrade.

Also stop referring to an OS upgrade as a service pack. Because it isn't. Microsoft releases service packs, just like Apple releases minor updates to their OS, (eg. 10.5.7)

nudded··on Apple worried for getting sued for 3rd party app content
> ... numerous apps have been rejected based on their usage of copyrighted content.

that is untrue, Apple doesn't care if you violate copyright. They consider the violated party to handle that deal. (example: there was a blatant ripoff of mario, it was not by nintendo and still made it on the appstore)

nudded··on Ask HN: What would you do with a Class C IP block?
because he's probably talking about doing it over wifi, which happens to degrade fast if it needs to traverse thick walls.
nudded··on Death by PowerPoint
I agree, slides hold your presentation together. They should give your audience a way to link the different parts of your story to the whole idea.
nudded··on Method Arguments In Ruby
> Java has the same types of method arguments.

no it hasn't. You can't do

   public method(String name = "test") {...}
in Java
nudded··on Ask HN: Trivial etiquette question - can he touch my laptop screen?
As long as your laptop doesn't increase in size, you should not worry
nudded··on Ask HN: Trivial etiquette question - can he touch my laptop screen?
That is definitly one to remember. And it is actually good advice, making a joke out of it will make the other person feel less bad.

And most importantly you only have the rights on the actual representation of the idea (be it a drawing, a blog post,...) and not the idea itself.
nudded··on Coding Horror: All Programming is Web Programming
good point. But say you have a photoshop webapp (with all the features the desktop version has). When you want to apply several filters, you are depending on the capabilities of the server and also on the current stressload of the servers. Things might take a long time to complete or cost too much.

With a desktop app, you're in control of your own machine.

nudded··on Coding Horror: All Programming is Web Programming
The problems that can happen with a webapp:

* your account gets compromised, your password is saved in plaintext, etc...

* their servers are down, you want to work on a Word doc, edit an image. To bad, you can't because the app itself is down

* not everybody has constant internet connectivity.

* Webapps can never be as powerful as a desktop application.

nudded··on Ask HN: What's a good programming language to start with?
If you want to wrap your head around OOP and Java, Bluej (bluej.org) is really usefull. It's used in my university (in the first half of the year, then we moved on to netbeans fcourse) to teach us the begins of OOP.

As of now this article has received 62 upvotes, so i guess some people liked it enough to upvote it.

I actually liked this article just because it contains more truth than "The case against apple". I don't understand why everybody reacted to "The case against apple" with agreement and now they decide that a counterpost is pointless.

If you didn't like the article, please just ignore it instead of posting a comment like that.
