nucleogenesis··on The privatization of policing
You’re right - whether being oppressed by people with the veneer of accountability or by a private military force without any, we should just shut up and accept it all as-is because there can’t possibly be any other way to have security.
nucleogenesis··on Police, prosecutors used junk science to decide 911 callers were liars
Yeah this isn’t surprising considering these are the people who think touching or breathing near fentanyl can kill you
nucleogenesis··on Devenv: Compose a Developer Environment Easily for PHP with Nix
My experience with devenv was disappointing. It claims to play well with existing tools but I ended up screwing around with arcane language-specific env cars to get a simple Python/pyenv/node setup going. It wasn’t quite so “oh just add your packages and roll” it was just like anything else “add your packages and fiddle with it til it works” and then it basically never worked. I was excited for it but it didn’t really add much value for me
nucleogenesis··on Flock is Building a New AI-Driven Mass-Surveillance System [pdf]
I get that - but note that I was responding to someone claiming that crime is “exploding” in a pretty general sense, which it just isn’t.

If someone is being materially impacted by some crime local to them then it’s not unreasonable to advocate for change to mitigate it.

I’d suggest that mitigating crimes like people pooping on sidewalks (or whatever) would better be done through means other than overt video surveillance (to take it back to the OP a bit) and rather that maybe overall things might improve through policies designed to ameliorate the societal conditions that lead to people being in a situation where they end up pooping in the sidewalk (or whatever) in the first place.

nucleogenesis··on Flock is Building a New AI-Driven Mass-Surveillance System [pdf]
What is your source on the explosion in crime? [This](https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2022/10/31/violent-cri...) suggests otherwise based on data from the US Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Violent crime and robbery have steadily declined for decades now.

Perhaps what has exploded is the number of people claiming crime has exploded despite pretty solid evidence to the contrary.

nucleogenesis··on Neovim Conf 2022
No. I have been programming for upwards of 8 years and I can tell you with absolute certainty that real coders use punch cards.
nucleogenesis··on Notion AI – waiting list signup
I was recently giving Coda a look and it’s got a lot of the same or similar features.
nucleogenesis··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
It doesn’t take being horrible and exploitative to build amazing things - it takes that kind of to make insane amounts of money building amazing things.
nucleogenesis··on More U.S. companies charging employees for job training if they quit
Of course - if you want to eat and have a house and make money and your options are limited due to the lack of any societal norm that people should be cared for and you weren’t privileged to have opportunities to or the the ability to develop skills that are worth money — then you should just be homeless instead of signing yourself into 10s of thousands of dollars of debt to a corporation.

Or you should be grateful for the opportunity to be contractually enslaved?

nucleogenesis··on Dating Other Task Managers
Sure you’ll get tons of recs but I’ve found Sunsama to be a great tool for separating things into categories.

It’s helped me separate family house tasks from work tasks. I can view them, plan them, etc separately or together.

nucleogenesis··on Why are sex workers forced to wear a financial scarlet letter?
> And of course, technically, most of us are forced to work by life circumstances.

This is the point - sex work is a job just like any other and deserves at least the same protections as any other job.

nucleogenesis··on Ask HN: Help me pick a front-end framework
> Does anyone still write plain JS?

Oh yeah. JSDoc for type docs has saved me a ton of time fighting with Typescript. I also just think TS is ugly and verbose and personally don’t care for using it.

With FE JS I am usually using types to define the params/returns of functions, or defining the shape of an object to avoid unexpected undefineds.

With JSDoc you get IDE diagnostics for your types when defined without having to appease TS’ particular rules.

For your answer I genuinely suggest running through the intro docs for a few of them to see what clicks.

Vue is alright. React is okay.

If you’re keen to learn a new language and/or have Lisp experience, ClojureScript and re-frame are a pleasure to work with

nucleogenesis··on Coinbase employees petition to remove execs
I think the movie Office Space might offer an example of the type of workplace OP is talking about.
nucleogenesis··on Inclusive Coding Bot on GitHub
Ah yes the classic authoritarianism of suggesting that you use words inclusive of every kind of person… the horror.

It literally wants to replace gender specific language with gender neutral language it’s literally like 1930s Germany… jfc

nucleogenesis··on The Shameful Decline of Scientific American
“Woke” thinking is a critique on those “thousands of years of global civilization” and the example I posted shows that what this “global civilization” has decided and coerced others into treating as the natural way of things just flat out isn’t.

So to say something like that the gender binary is an oppressive and unjust norm in global society because trans, intersex, non-binary, gender-fluid, etc people exist does at least seem more justified when you find that it’s not the only naturally occurring way for humans to categorize themselves.

nucleogenesis··on The Shameful Decline of Scientific American
Because gender is a made up thing informed by social norms. Not all societies abide the gender binary. Gender studies are a sociological study because there is no gender without some social structure enforcing it.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_in_Bugis_society

Go learn in some depth of “woke” ideology before getting fired up online about it. Learn it from “woke” people and talk with them and take it seriously and maybe next time you might bring some critical thought to the table instead of the same rote “woke people bad and anti-science” drivel.

nucleogenesis··on Ask HN: How to continue to be gracious about the good fortune of rich friends?
If you built that raft using plans, materials, and labor of society, then you risk your life to go out to the deep water to get food, then your contribution is just the last bit. To suggest it’s so important that the others involved deserve no spoils of your work (put another way - you say your effort deserves more spoils or sole control of the spoils) - then you’re selfish at the very least (although I’d say you’re among the worst kinds of humans to share society with) and exactly the reason why laws that extract aggressively from the wealthy are the only way to inch capitalism toward something resembling equity for most.
nucleogenesis··on Show HN: OnlyRecipe.app – Remove clutter from recipe sites
Some blogs do the extra stuff right. Sally’s Baking Addiction’s preceding blog is often invaluable with tips about timing, temperatures, possible places things can go wrong, etc.

It has the floating “skip to recipe” button which is handy when you come back to a familiar recipe for some details.

The clutter isn’t the problem as much as the content quality is most often for me.

nucleogenesis··on Ask HN: I'm tired of intense code review cycles
Right and “we don’t need to use black because we haven’t yet and things work fine” is a bad response that dismisses the real needs and concerns of others on the team when they’re saying “things aren’t fine we want computers to handle the nitpicks from here”. I wouldn’t say it indicates junior tech skills but it’s a sign of junior management skills.
nucleogenesis··on Freedom.js
I’ve been looking at Gun.js for a similar use case. This will be fun to dig into too, thanks for sharing.

nucleogenesis··on How I debate
> Debates are essential in a free society. The alternative to debate is force. Either you convince your neighbour to do as you think they should do, or else you send men with guns to his place.

Yep there is no alternative option it’s either kill everybody who disagrees with you or change their mind…

nucleogenesis··on The Creative World’s Bullshit Industrial Complex
Capitalism begets grifters as a matter of necessity.

This arena might be reserved for compulsive liars and psychopaths were we not compelled by society to make ends meet regardless of whether or not the ends ethically justify the means.

In this society, bullshitting is built-in at every level to some degree and being savvy in it can be the difference between subsisting and not.

nucleogenesis··on Clarifications regarding arrest of climate activist
I think the French asked the Swiss to aid them in the investigation. Idk the whole story but I think it was to get some squatting climate activists (you know, super serious crimes…).

The linked post by Proton suggests VPN and Tor usage for better anonymity.

nucleogenesis··on The Endgame for Cryptocurrency
> At the moment, the cryptocurrencies need a powerful democracy that can maintain global hegemony.

That’s a tall order. We don’t have that for people lol how would it happen for magic math money? It’s hard to maintain hegemony without imminent threat of violence so how could something 100% dependent on the internet somehow overcome the constant threat of state violence using the internet that the violent states regulate and control? You’ll need a crypto-military to impose the will of this global crypto hegemony.

nucleogenesis··on Will the rich world’s worker deficit last?
I highly suggest you dig into Marx and economic leftist thought (Richard Wolff is a very clear modern source and a well respected Marxist economist) because this kind of exploitation has long been identified by those critical of capitalism as endemic to capitalism. Roughly, a key line of Marxist thought suggests that Capitalism is designed to alienate the worker so that they are more easily exploited by the capital owning class. People now want to live “outside society” because capitalist incentives necessarily eliminate the ability of people to even build a community or society in their own interest because nearly everything they must do to subsist robs them of the opportunity (long working hours, long commutes, a distinct lack of agency in life under exploitative management, and so on).

I could never do it justice here, but you might find it valuable knowing how and when people have very legitimately been making the same point (roughly) that you’re saying here for generations.

nucleogenesis··on Having a go: US parents say Peppa Pig is giving their kids British accents
Yeah hate to admit my kids watched enough of that and the Australian Bluey in the past few months she says some words and phrases with a heavy British or Aussie accent. Just things like the word “no” or short phrases like “grab the tawch (torch aka flashlight)”.

It’s honestly offputting but I figure when she has more time with random American kids in playgroups she’ll sound like an American again sooner or later.
