nuancebydefault··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
They meant distilling in a more original sense, not per se in the LLM-era meaning of the word sense.
nuancebydefault··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
> No LLM in schools

The only plausible thing to enforce in practice is "no LLM usage in tests", ie using pen and paper or a fully managed digital device.

> The thing is I think there will come a time when AI tools will not be as accessible as they are now

I am very convinced that today's SOTA level will be accessible 3 years from now, but you might be right about the SOTA accessibility at that point in time.

Still with today's SOTA you need to know much less details to be able to write code than without it.

I'm sorry to read that. In fact I meant love in a more broad sense. There are many kinds of love, it does not need to be having a spouse. I work every weekday mainly for having good relations with people, money comes second.

But coming back to your story of life (ignoring the last sentence) : it's not too late to find love and also: try knowing and loving yourself, being content a bit more. When that succeeds, it is more easy to find love.

I would put love above health. Suppose you are perfectly healthy and even rich but have no friends to share anything with, life must be meaningless then.

Sounds like human generated code and docs. TBH

> thinking does not require language

It requires some kind of signal. Words of a language are a signal. We choose words for an llm to interact with us, but other transformers work on pixel values or audio sample values. There exist transformers used on brain probe generated values.

I would see human language processing as a kind of coprocessor sitting in another side of the brain. But the same can be said about transformers in general. The words side is only part of them, to be able to communicate.

How sure are you that comprehension is not a mere form of advanced pattern matching? We have the intuition that ideas and words appear trivially in people's mind, based on comprehension. I think chances are, that intuition is wrong.
nuancebydefault··on Fastpotify
I think you got a but too much negativity, from a crowd that became more easily irratated because their AI sensor became very sensitive by e.g. reviewing a lot of AI generated code and comments.
nuancebydefault··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
I regularly had a depression for years without even knowing it was a depression. Until a neurologist told me, after examination of brain imaging, it's best to take this pill for at least a week. Only after feeling its effect, I knew it was really depression causing the symptoms, even though I did not feel depressed! I felt exhausted and stressed and had several physical side effects like dizzyness and stomach ache.

> Undigitized data is still data. Wording, style, nuance, type, artwork, binding, metadata, attributions, citability… all of these things are permanently lost

I understand what you mean but... "permanently lost" sounds dramatic. When I trow away old pictures, old drawings or pieces made by my son at school, they are lost as well. Not that I do that often, but it begs the question, should every 'ip' made by humans be preserved?

The post is quite (too?) cynical. In fact you can awe or ruminate over many things, even over the output of AI. The truth is, AI is getting so ubiquitous that our sense of awe has been numbed. That's why many things feel like slop, you know it did not take much effort.

In my math syllabus for Engineering there was a book "numeric analysis", it showed how you could find the solution to weird equations like x=ln(x)

I thought this is nowadays called gradient descent

The money is just a gauge of how much food, housing, clothing, energy,... one person can consume versus another. Money is not absolute, it is relative x/y. Ultimately, the real stuff can be produced by machines operated by say 10 percent of the world population. Machines or robots or even AI can pay taxes, their owner hands over xx percent of the income produced by it to the government who gives it as eg ubi to people.
nuancebydefault··on Claude Opus 5
There will be a form of UBI, because of the need for it, eventually. It will probably never be a 'fair' system (there probly will still be 1000xUBI people) but it will be necessary to prevent a lot of problems.

Think of it this way. The percentage of the population that will not have enough skills, 'smartness' and or knowledge to serve the community in a profitable way, increases over time. Today the group includes mostly the very young, the elderly (which in a way already have a 'kind of UBI', but not the complete lifespan) and people with a severe illness. Tomorrow new groups of people will be included, like people who stopped going to school at 17,18yo or so, and so on.

Suppose society provides those people with only the very minimal money to survive and no entertainment, traveling, proper housing, life choices etc. In that case not only those people, but the society as a whole will suffer because of unrest, riots etc. At a certain point in time, UBI can easily paid for by the wealth that automation will bring. Today probably as well, but the pressure of unevenly spread wealth is still able to keep it from happening, rich people still need enough poor people to work for them directly (house/boat personnel) or indirectly (mine coffee, chocolate, soy, battery minerals, ...)

I'm not very materialistic and i have saved heaps, so never in financial trouble.

What I'm always looking for is love, even though I have a loving family, wife and kid. Its always been like that. I almost constantly want to connect with people, as if anyone should be a backup or shoulder to cry on, should I fall. I can't afford to anyone not liking me.

I dream of being with that lady, she makes me feel good when she's around, but my mind knows she cannot fulfill this always present desire for love or close connection. It will certainly not be a good idea to break what I already have, even hardship alone. I don't know her well and i probably never will. So i keep on musing about her, probably as long as I will regularly see her passing by. We will keep on smiling at each other and talk gently about our struggles in life. I can't help it, it's who I am.

So what a lot of people feel around money, posessions, status, early retirement, nice vacations, a trained body... I have around love and connection and it will probably never resolve. I believe I'm coming to terms with it.

nuancebydefault··on The memory shortage is causing a repricing of consumer electronics
So the availability of cheap phones is going down because of the cost of RAM.

What about the RAM consumption trend of the last 10 years? I think it is very feasible to produce phones with the same amount of RAM as was the norm 10 years ago. The only compromise would be using older algorithms and features that consume less of it, and to take a bit of effort on keeping an eye on memory consumption in the development phase. There's a lot of opportunity. We can even leverage AI these days to optimize existing software for RAM usage.
