ntkachov··on Satya Nadella Email to Employees: RE: Grace Hopper Conference
>Maria asked me what advice I would offer women who are not comfortable asking for pay raises

>If you think you deserve a raise, you should just ask.

Great Advice. A+. His original answer probably answered the question better. The answer he gave for the question he was asked was very appropriate. The "Do it anyways" response that was given by Maria doesn't answer the question, it avoids the topic all together and doesn't help the person for whom its an actual problem.

ntkachov··on Dremel Releases a Mass-Market 3D Printer
Thats actually pretty reasonable provided the print quality warrants the price tag. I would buy it for that price if it could print things with enough structural support for every day use.
ntkachov··on Why doctors are sick of their profession
we've got the market playing for us. Once supply catches up, there won't be as high of a salary.
ntkachov··on Amazon has sold no more than 35,000 Fire phones, data suggests
Only about 11,000 on campus though. I'm sure most of their employees couldn't afford a fire phone.
ntkachov··on Nintendo Open Source Software Source Code Distribution Page
Nope. I think its hardware emulation. The DS games run on one of the processors. I think its the processor that runs the system OS, which is why you can't just back out of a DS game into the main menu, you have to quit the game. Also the reason why you don't get street passes when you play DS games.
ntkachov··on One Weird Trick To Make Vim Go Faster On Your Mac
Odd, I have them both all the way on the right and it still feels slugish to me.
ntkachov··on Mike Judge Skewers Silicon Valley With the Satire of Our Dreams
Actually, the overuse of the laugh track is probably the only funny part of BBT.
ntkachov··on Mercedes Is Owning This Formula 1 Season
I'm loving the direction F1 is going. Sure, for the hardcore fans, the noise just isn't the same, and the cars aren't going as fast anymore, but I love that they are trying to force the manufacturers to improve their lower spec engines. Maybe the next rule change we'll have CVT as a requirement instead of a gear box.
ntkachov··on Samsung Galaxy S5 Display Technology Shoot-Out
My guess is that if your company will pay for your phone (some companies don't bother with desk phones so they will buy you a corporate cell phone) it doesn't really matter which phone you get.
ntkachov··on WTF, HTML and CSS?
>The root of the limitations is that Internet Explorer uses a 32bit integer to identify, sort, and apply the cascading rules. The integer’s 32bits are split into five fields: four sheetIDs of 5 bits each, and one 12bit ruleID

Is there a reason for this? Why not just use 3 shorts?

ntkachov··on I Defaulted On My Student Loans (And It Was The Best Decision Of My Life)
Quick LinkedIn search turned her up.

Arkansas Tech University - 09, Judging by her skills on linked in, I would say Journalism or something in the English department.

The University is $8k-11k depending on in/out of state. So thats a top of 88k. But from her linked in profile it looks like she's in state so, worst case, we're looking at $65,000 for the 4 years. So her monthly payments at a whopping 10% apr (which is the highest I've ever seen student loans go) would be $860, had she not defaulted. But since she did shes looking at a monthly payment of $545. I don't know her details but I'm going to say that $860 would be more than she made after taxes.

So, no big name school here. No loan sharks. And a pretty reasonably priced university. And I'm sure that everyone expected her to graduate and make at least $12/hr which would allow her to split rent and still pay her loans (with some food money). Based off that I would say its pretty reasonable to say she got shafted by the economy. Finding work as a journalist after the collapse would be quite hard. But before that it seemed like a genuinely decent field. Sure, its not comp sci or petrol eng but it was a good way to go.

ntkachov··on Dart 1.0 Is Out
This is speculation: but JetBrains work on dart IDE, android releasing ART, I'm tempted to say we're 2 years out from seeing DART running on android. It makes sense from a business sense, have the option of running dart apps on android would free the platform from its java dependance.
ntkachov··on ECMA-404: The JSON Data Interchange Format [pdf]
More of a formality than anything else. Since JSON was already defined by Javascript, formalizing it doesn't really engrave the standard, it just gives it the recognition that its not just some whacky thing created by Dave.
ntkachov··on The limits of Google’s openness
Your disclaimer probably says it all. Why bother when there just aren't that many people on windows phone. It seems like a matter of "who is helping who?". if Google didn't support the iPhone, there would be an outrage and people would move to other video service because of the number of people on iphone. If google didn't support android... well that would be silly, wouldn't it? But there aren't enough people on windows phone for it to matter to google, however, there are enough people on youtube for it to matter for microsoft.
ntkachov··on A Drinking Glass That Can Prevent Sexual Assault
Does it matter if its common? If its something we can prevent, why not?
ntkachov··on An open letter to Jeff Bezos: A contract worker’s take on Amazon.com
I've been a dev at Amazon. They don't hire devs as contractors. They hire the people that support the devs. Testers, validators, vetters, etc. If you need someone to manually poke, prod, click on a button all day long, they hire temps for that. The testers for our app were temps, same thing with the people that would click the "approve" button on user submitted images or uploads.
ntkachov··on Empathy among students in engineering programmes
I'm pretty sure I'm 36.6 C and very much alive, thank you very much.

I don't appreciate the "Engineers are ice cold" rhetoric. I can't tell if its satirizing the research or if they are just link baiting but this article seems to portray all engineers as terrible people.

ntkachov··on 8pen - A new way to write on mobile devices
I've been using gesture typing and regular typing on my phone and my tablet. The muscle memory from one has flown into the other quite nicely. However, something like this would require me to relearn how I type altogether.

Something that, as someone who uses their phone and tablet for valuable emails all the time, I don't have time for.

ntkachov··on Why have I failed?
The idea, from what I understand, is that a 100 page business plan is ultimately wasted time as a good chunk of that will change very quickly. So rather than writing 100 pages of, what will inevitably become obsolete, you should write a shorter one and focus on actually creating the business.
ntkachov··on Google Maps for iOS
What is app number 1?
ntkachov··on EA “Gives Away” 1000s Of Free Games Due To No Server-Side Validation
Yes because some (most of the ones worth paying for) of the games require some sort of server. So every new player in a game is not free for EA. Giving away a game means they will lose money on this person if they play online.
ntkachov··on Professional Software Engineer Exam coming in April 2013
Really? Just because its structured like waterfall doesn't mean its "how to do waterfall". I read the req spec and there isn't a thing on here that isn't valuable information for every engineer no matter what process they use.

Read what it actually covers and the topics they test and tell me there's something on there that is completely useless.

ntkachov··on Professional Software Engineer Exam coming in April 2013
I think it might augment the private sector in that anyone with a licence is probably worth interviewing. I can't see it being required (not in this market) but I can see it being valued.
ntkachov··on Samsung Creates New File System F2FS For Linux, Good News For Android
I owned that phone, it did suck.

The only good thing about that phone (besides the screen) is that it was nearly unbreakable and had a great custom Rom scene. Almost all of the roms replaced the file system.

ntkachov··on Calling all Geeks: Chattanooga Pays Techies to Relocate
They are asking for quite a bit but they are paying very little. Their relocation payout is $1250. For many of the big companies they pay their interns more to relocate. Asking for top tech talent to move for $11,250 is little more than a signing bonus.

This plan will get them two kinds of people, people already thinking of moving to Cahttanooga, and people who need the money.

ntkachov··on Why I Hate Tech Recruiters
How does one avoid the recruiter?
ntkachov··on Why I Hate Tech Recruiters
My personal favorite is the recruiters that don't seem to go past the skills section on a linked in profile.

"I noticed your profile - you have a nice background in software engineering, specifically in core production environments. I have clients looking for Senior Engineers who know the cutting edge technologies, and have a passion for making great software."

I'm graduating next year, my last job was an internship, and I do mobile development (seriously everything on my resume is an app or mobile website). Its like they don't spend more than 2 seconds on your profile.

ntkachov··on PCSX2 1.0 released
These guys have been in development a long time. I remember playing on version 9.7 and 9.8 and it was really solid back then.

I wonder how long it will take before we see PS2 emulated on android devices.
