nozfud··on The Complicated Legacy of Stewart Brand’s “Whole Earth Catalog”
The quality of writing in America has really fallen off. NYMag, NYT, etc. used to publish at least mediocre journalism & opinions. I guess the death of print means talented people just work elsewhere, the incentives are skewed, or some combination of factors.
nozfud··on Oil Demand for Cars Is Already Falling
We need to ban production of fossil fuels immediately. Tax the sale of reserves so that people can’t afford to depend on this existential threat for daily life. Subsidize the production of green electricity and fund the transition to a fossil-free world. If the market can’t handle this, nationalize whatever industry nessecary and bring under a central plan to accomplish the goal. The alternative of runaway climate change is far worse.
nozfud··on OpenZFS vs. Btrfs and other file systems (2017)
Matt Ahrens:

“There's nothing special about ZFS that requires/encourages the use of ECC RAM more so than any other filesystem. If you use UFS, EXT, NTFS, btrfs, etc without ECC RAM, you are just as much at risk as if you used ZFS without ECC RAM. Actually, ZFS can mitigate this risk to some degree if you enable the unsupported ZFS_DEBUG_MODIFY flag (zfs_flags=0x10). This will checksum the data while at rest in memory, and verify it before writing to disk, thus reducing the window of vulnerability from a memory error.

I would simply say: if you love your data, use ECC RAM. Additionally, use a filesystem that checksums your data, such as ZFS.”
