nouveaux··on How to enjoy SF
How are you going to compare pizza in SF to NYC pizza? How many places in the world has better pizza than NYC at a lower price?
nouveaux··on Throw away your first draft of your code
If other people need to read your email/doc/code, then any effort to make it more readable will save them time, regardless of how smart they are.

"If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter."

nouveaux··on Octos – HTML live wallpaper engine
I see it often. I plug my Mac laptop to 2 screens and usually one screen won't have any windows until I move something over manually.

I have something that rotates my desktop wallpaper daily so it's fun to see a random wallpaper pop up.

nouveaux··on Amsterdam bans cruise ships
As someone who likes to rent a car in a foreign country and drive to random places to get a feel for local culture, I also like cruises because...I like being on a floating hotel for a vacation too. Floating around in the middle of the ocean is a great feeling. I also know how to plan a land vacation.

I'm not sure why some have such a disdain for other people's vacation choice. I don't care to lay on a beach or be at a pool for most of my vacation but to each their own.

nouveaux··on Ability to see expertise is a milestone worth aiming for (2022)
In the case of the economist, he may have the best theories but it doesn't mean it's correct. He is likely saying his theories have too much uncertainties.

In the case of the evolutionary biologist, successful procreation does not require any knowledge of biology.

When it comes to planes, there is a high correlation between the quality of the plane and the quality of the design.

nouveaux··on Good code is like a love letter to the next developer who will maintain it
Sorry future me, I'm on a tight deadline. If I spent an extra two hours making this better now, you wouldn't have to spend two days fixing these problems. You're probably still on a tight deadline.
nouveaux··on More than 75% of Steam games tested are playable or verified on the Steam Deck
It's probably a matter of tastes but the games I'm interested in are on deep discounts. I only picked up a few because I already have a big backlog. The sales are there but it depends on the game.
nouveaux··on California will begin backing intentional burns to control wildfire
Did you not notice that all of the pacific north west and the Rockies have been burning? All these other states that had prescribed burning also had massive wild fires.
nouveaux··on Westfield Gives Up Downtown San Francisco Mall
I am no SF apologist but if you read through the article:

"Over the past three years, Westfield has sold a number of properties, including the Westfield Brandon in Tampa, the Westfield North County in San Diego and the Westfield Santa Anita in Arcadia."

SF leadership is problematic but it's not clearcut to me that Westfield closure is just an SF city problem.

nouveaux··on Django Views – The Right Way
The problem with relying on fancy IDE to untangle your classes is that it breaks on GitHub. Also it's harder to discuss snippets of code asynchronously.

People like to think CBV offer a lot of free things but they miss the trade off. CBV makes it easier to write code but harder to read the code. CBV should only be used for the simplest of cases IMO.

nouveaux··on SVB chief pressed lawmakers to weaken bank risk regulations
Putting money in a bank is a form of risk management. A startup can choose to:

* Buy expensive office equipment or put it in a bank

* Go on a hiring spree or put it in a bank

* Acquire another company or put it in a bank

* Put money in crypto or put it in a bank

Shopping for a bank might mitigate a bit more of your risk. Putting it inside of a bank is low risk compared to the many things you can do with money.

Hundreds of thousands of businesses store more than $250k in a bank and for most of them, the largest risk to their business is not their bank.

nouveaux··on 95% of Bay Area Cities Lost Zoning Authority
This might be true in an area with gentrificiation but this is unlikely to be true in wealthy areas. Cupertino, as an example, is struggling with the last generation not moving out. The end result is a lower population of kids.

nouveaux··on Why Steam Deck Is One of the Most Significant PC Gaming Moments in Years
The steam deck has allowed me to play so much more of my steam library. The sleep feature and portability opens up so many more games. I can now play big, open world games 15-30 min at a time instead of watching a random youtube video or show.
nouveaux··on Companies save billions of dollars by giving employees fake “manager” titles
That's probably not a path you want to go down. Do we start putting employees in jail for wage theft?
nouveaux··on Steve Wozniak used to tip from printed sheets of $2 bills
The reason why it used to be celebrated on HN, and why GP laments the change is that Woz hacked security. This is a great example of social engineering and it's in the vein of the old 80's hacker mentality. Besides for the fun story, it is a security breach that all these security personnel failed to pick up on.

I agree with the GP that this kind of thing should be celebrated on HN and we should encourage the next generation to continue hacking.

nouveaux··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
This 1000x. For a larger project, I asked and got approval for a POC. When I submitted the POC with feature flag for review, I was told by the same management that it wasn't "production worthy". Never burned out faster in my 20+ year career.
nouveaux··on Sourcehut will blacklist the Go module mirror
Go since inception has always been well funded. It is authored by some of the biggest names in programming and they are on staff at Google. This is not a side hobby. Not sure why you're suggesting that Go is lacking in resources.
nouveaux··on Sourcehut will blacklist the Go module mirror
I think the actions here are meant to generate attention. Google is acting in bad faith and needs to be called out.
nouveaux··on Investors conclude that Tesla is a carmaker, not a tech firm
Waze is not able to plan a route with all the charging stops you need. Waze is fairly bad in an EV.
nouveaux··on Practice typing by retyping entire novels
"Your typing speed has no affect on your ability to be a good developer."

I think you mean to say that your ability to type at 45 wpm has a minimal impact on your ability to be a good developer. To me, 45 wpm is moderate but not slow. I have seen developers who type at around 10-15 wpm.

I have noticed that developers who are slower typers are more likely to fight back on simple changes and writing documentation. It just takes them more time to do the same amount of work that a faster typist will take. In my experience, slow typer are great at reasoning about the code base and coming up with designs in their head, but poor at writing code and communicating with text either through email/slack or documentation.

People who are not fast typist can be very smart but will always be at a disadvantage when it comes to using the keyboard.

nouveaux··on Ask HN: Parents: Best screen-time limiting software?
"1. Enforced limits are adversarial."

One of the primary jobs for parents is to set limits. Bedtime, sugar, chores, homework, etc are all forms of limits. If screentime is more adversarial than bedtime, could this be an indication of addiction?

nouveaux··on Ask HN: Reading material on how to be a better software engineer?
Obviously if you land in a perfect environment, then you won't need outside resources.

I am self taught in how to write good code by reading books, watching videos, and reading recommended open source code. I was never in an environment with other great coders who reviewed my code. HN was my guide in how to learn to write better code.

It is possible to be self taught at writing good code.

nouveaux··on Resolving the great undo-redo quandary

nouveaux··on Things your manager might not know (2021)
Designing comensation systems for other people is a people management tasks. How do you envision a situation where ICs are doing management tasks but not given the title and/or pay of a manager?
