nottombrown··on Access the database of a heroku application from another heroku application
establish_connection will automatically parse a postgres URI for you, so you can just use:

    ActiveRecord::Base.establish_connection(ENV['DATABASE_URL'])
This also works for class-specific databases:

    class Photo < ActiveRecord::Base
      establish_connection(ENV['PHOTOS_DATABASE_URL'])
    end
nottombrown··on Free Hackation in New York to work on your side project
I added a clarification to the application that US citizenship is not required.
nottombrown··on Free Hackation in New York to work on your side project
Absolutely not a requirement. Awesome Non US citizens should apply.
nottombrown··on Thoughts on Paul Rand
Both Maeda and Rand are legends. Ironic that poor design of the ACG site clashed so much with the content of the article.

Notes to self:

In QA format, place the answers close to the questions they correspond to.

Be consistent in placing initials before dialog.
nottombrown··on Some things beginners might not know about Sublime Text
Cmd-Shift-P is incredibly useful. It lets you intelligently search all the commands.

Want to Save-all? Cmd-Shift-P, type 'save' and hit enter. Plus it takes into account any customizations or add-ons you might have put together.

nottombrown··on "Don't f***ing trim the copy"
First reaction to the current site - There's too much copy.

It's good to know your strengths and to be willing to lean on the people that you trust. It's bad to be a pushover.

Do you think she got mad because your change made the product less compelling or because she felt it undermined her status?

nottombrown··on Different Mobile Features - Same KPI's
Interesting. This is in line with Fred Wilson's recent post.

People see the phone as the application. Individual apps on the home screen are the features.

nottombrown··on Megaupload Founder Goes From Arrest to Cult Hero
Whatever PR firm has been advising him has been doing a superb job. See the framing of his newfound love of social media:

"Asked why he had become so active online, Mr. Dotcom said he was using the most efficient way to respond to all the good-will messages he had received."

nottombrown··on Bye Bye Craigslist
Failing to find what you're looking for because of a frustrating UI is not positive reinforcement. People stay on the site because it is the largest marketplace and they have no alternatives.
nottombrown··on Bye Bye Craigslist
For the housing vertical. It looked like this. http://www.padmapper.com/
nottombrown··on Bye Bye Craigslist
Agreed. Housing, where location is easily the most important factor, is where Craigslist is least usable as a product. Padmapper's success is a testament to Craigslist's users wanting something better. This is a big middle finger to all those users.
nottombrown··on Postmates Debuts ‘Get It Now’ On-Demand Courier Service To The Public
I used the beta to get a last-minute gift for my mom that I wouldn't have otherwise had time for. The app let me find and call the store to confirm that they had the item I wanted before having it delivered.

Amazon Prime for everything. Can't wait till the NYC launch.

nottombrown··on Somebody please, for the love of god, fix shipping/couriers
I've used postmates several times and have been consistently impressed with the quality of the experience. The polar opposite of traditional parcel delivery.
nottombrown··on Over 40% of cancers due to lifestyle, says review
Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common in the US. If you are going to take a single supplement, make it 1000 UI/day of D.

That said, if you are going to spend time outside, the benefits of wearing sunscreen and a hat undoubtedly outweigh whatever risk they may induce.

nottombrown··on When it comes to hiring, I'll take a Github commit log over a resume any day.
This is absolutely the right way of thinking about the problem. If you can afford to be picky, this filtering saves you time and doubt.
