notsrg··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
We got into scuba diving about 3 years ago. Have something like 200 dives now logged across Southern California, Hawaii and the Caribbean. Planning on adding Indonesia to the list later this year. That wow factor you experience the first time you dive hasn't gone away after 200 dives and I don't think it'll go away after 2000. Probably the most life-affirming thing I've ever gotten into and can't recommend it enough.
notsrg··on [dead]
They rebranded from TransferWise to just Wise not too long ago.
notsrg··on Bun v1.0.0
Any docs for migrating an existing Nextjs project? No rush but would be great to have :)
notsrg··on ChatGPT app for iOS
also had the same issue. Figured after the first page it would probably show up but I scrolled multiple pages and still nothing.
notsrg··on Ask HN: I hate gym. How to stay in shape?
Strength training gives meaning and purpose to every gym session for me personally. Look into Stronglifts 5x5 - it's 3 exercises a session and all you really need is a squat rack, so if you go to a proper gym they should always have one open. With proper form, nutrition and patience, you could go from squatting the bar to squatting 2 plates in a couple months. I've done some form of this on/off for around 7 years.
notsrg··on Ask HN: What would be your stack if you are building an MVP today?
T3 stack - Typescript, TRPC and Tailwind (uses NextJS, Prisma, etc). This is the closest in the JS/TS world to something like Django and end-to-end typesafety can enable you to go blazingly fast. Copilot became pretty good at autogenerating my queries/mutations for me too which was nice.
notsrg··on Ask HN:Why did I fail to learn web development?
No one cares that hooks are "functional" - they care because it's a much better way to share logic across components vs higher order components.
notsrg··on “My PGP key is compromised, and at least many of my bitcoins stolen”
Looks like 3.6M: https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/btc/1YAR6opJCf...
notsrg··on Trump's Trading Card Grift Is Worse Than You Think
Is $60 for a union made, made in America sweater really the comparison you're gonna make? Trump sells made in China MAGA hats for $50.
notsrg··on Lemmy: A Federated Reddit Alternative
Kind of a self report if your ideology depends on using slurs, don't you think?
notsrg··on JetBrains Ring UI
As a FE developer I appreciate the updates from HN when a bigger company releases something as OSS. It's nice to know what approaches others are taking to solve similar problems.
notsrg··on Health insurers just published close to a trillion hospital prices
TIL Blue Cross is a "non-profit"
notsrg··on Deviations from Chromium (features we disable or remove)
"Show Brave Rewards icon in address bar" is the only setting you really need to disable. Every once in a while they launch a new feature related to crypto i.e. in the new tab page but generally they're pretty good at letting you opt out entirely.
notsrg··on Ask HN: Can you share websites that are pushing the utility of browsers forward?
Figma is written in C++ and compiled to web assembly. All the UX designers I know are using it because it's pretty powerful for a webapp.
notsrg··on Ask HN: What helped you get good at programming?
Getting an internship at a company with solid engineering culture.
notsrg··on Lets talk about blockchains
If they won't use a password manager why would they use a crypto wallet? Adding public key cryptography to the mix almost guarantees the barrier to entry is higher.
notsrg··on Lets talk about blockchains
>Everyone agrees the legacy web auth is broken

Only web3 enthusiasts with a solution in search of a problem agree with this. Auth has been a solved problem for years. Use a password manager. No need for blockchain nonsense. Next.

notsrg··on Canada to ban foreigners from buying homes
In Toronto alone ~40% of new homes being built are being scooped up by investors that obviously have more cash on hand to pay above asking price. With interest rates so low and demand so high, why would they not be driving up the price? It works in their favor.
notsrg··on Apple will charge 27% commission for alternative payment systems in Netherlands
This implies the business is setting the price, which if so, sure I guess. But "creator economy" applications as one example also fall under "digital goods", which means a user is setting the price on a platform to provide a service for $X, the platform takes $Y cut, and then pays the user $X - $Y, but then Apple wants 30% of $X. It's absolutely insane because most platforms out there don't even charge a fee that high so in order to cover the Apple tax they either have to make $0 per transaction and also pay creators less, or just charge consumers $X + 30% up front.
notsrg··on Apple will charge 27% commission for alternative payment systems in Netherlands
The company I work for literally charges 30% more for iOS users lol.
notsrg··on Apple will charge 27% commission for alternative payment systems in Netherlands
I'm shocked those defending the Apple tax aren't considering the fact that businesses are just offloading that tax onto consumers making things artificially more expensive for iOS users. Even worse, when you do this you can't communicate why this is the case or tell people you can use the web for cheaper so users feel like you're just scamming them.
notsrg··on Ask HN: Is it worth it to invest in learning TypeScript?
Over the last couple years I've worked at a F500 company with no TS and a startup which auto generated TS types (so i.e. 100% TS) and guess which company moved faster? The F500 you literally had to get on multiple meetings across multiple teams just to figure out what values something might be. It took months to onboard new engineers and the bus factor was insanely high.

Once you've worked in a codebase with consistent TS usage, it's very, very painful to go back to vanilla JS, so imo yes, TS is worth the investment.

notsrg··on Decreasing service fees on subscriptions to 15%
The problem with this is that using Apple Pay would be more expensive and so why would anyone use it?
notsrg··on Ask HN: What's the most rewarding investment you've made in your career?
Learning javascript and learning it well.
notsrg··on PyCon US 2021 Recordings are Available
Found this annoying too. I manually set the width of the playlist div to like 2000px just so the titles wouldn't get cropped.
notsrg··on CDC panel recommends resuming use of Johnson and Johnson vaccine
That's 25% of the population of Canada.
notsrg··on Hermes, a JavaScript engine optimized for React Native
Using tools made by FB doesn't imply support for the company. Ultimately having FB open source React/RN has been great for open source - by the time it hits public release it's already been battle tested internally.
notsrg··on macOS Big Sur
Anyone figure out how to resolve this?: "An error occurred while installing the selected updates".

I got to 100% downloaded and it got stuck and now anytime I attempt to install it I get that error immediately.

notsrg··on Microsoft and Google collaborate to make PWAs better

notsrg··on Self-Hosted Chat for Small Teams
Worked on this a bit years ago. Can confirm that it's no longer maintained. We eventually gave up and just moved over to Slack.
