notsound··on More Americans are using fake license plates
Some psycho with a generic SUV and no license can easily kill a couple people. It's so easy people do it accidentally all the time.
notsound··on iOS 17 will reportedly set the stage for sideloading apps on iPhone
Except people that don't have a computer, a decent chunk of technical know-how, and if you want the apps to stick around for longer than a week, $99/year.
notsound··on Cash App founder Bob Lee stabbed to death after argument about suspect's sister
Is it? I don't think DNA plays into who people elect/hire as much as a college degree. Also, people know which college they went to. People generally don't know what % of their DNA is Norwegian.
notsound··on Access to abortion pill in limbo after competing rulings
In some ways, but I do think freedom is more nuanced than doing whatever you want, even at other people's expense. In the case of abortion, I think the fetus is infringing on the mother's rights by consuming resources without their consent. It's also debatable whether fetuses are "alive".
notsound··on Access to abortion pill in limbo after competing rulings
I see abortion as just another culture war issue. I think people should be able to revoke their bodily resources at will, and that includes the unborn.
notsound··on Apple halted M2 chip production in January amid 'plummeting' Mac sales
It's definitely more complicated than that for most components, but a 256GB SSD you can't upgrade yourself is ridiculous.
notsound··on Maps show how parking lots “eat” U.S. cities
In what cities is sunlight a "scarce resource"? Many cities actively plant trees to create shade. Also, who the hell sunbathes in a parking lot? Nice pun tho
notsound··on Do we live in a society without a counterculture?
I think it's inaccurate to call a group that has large political parties in essentially every democratic country "counterculture". To me that seems like calling the moderate left counterculture. Maybe neo-nazis and other radicals are, but that's because nobody likes them except for themselves.
notsound··on Everyone Wants Your Email Address. Think Twice Before Sharing It
Not the commenter, but cloudflare email routing works well w/ a $1/year xyz domain (random 6 -9 digit domains are discounted). It's worth noting that this might not be as private as iCloud or mozilla's solutions, as you share a domain with all other costumers. On the other hand, people have held onto domains for very long amounts of time, and the system is less susceptible to "it wasn't making enough money so you can't access some of your accounts now".
notsound··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
These scam call centers aren't owned by glorious socialist warriors, they're owned by comparatively wealthy individuals that pay their workers far less than the profit of their labor and often hold them under terrible working conditions. Also, yes feeling bad for old people losing their life savings is the correct position (america doesn't exactly accommodate for people without money).
notsound··on Twitter’s Broken Its Copyright Strike System, Users Are Uploading Full Movies
If anyone familiar with this topic is here, how much does this type of content id system cost? Do the studios pay for some of it? In any case, Elon is digging himself a big hole, filling it with money, and then jumping into it on fire and covered in gasoline.
notsound··on Louisiana man tells joke online, gets arrested by swat
What if I am also anti those countries?
notsound··on EU Voice
If you limit it only to government officials/orgs, moderation isn’t an issue. Plenty of good, trustworthy mastodon instances exist.
notsound··on Apparently you cannot have the Kanye interview on Google Drive now
TBH this might be one of Ye’s people trying to control the damage.
notsound··on Ask HN: Have you used a 3D Printer?
9. I have an FDM printer (ender 3), and I’ve made some (somewhat) neat stuff. So far, I’ve printed in PLA and transparent PETG (printing with a high layer height, thin walls, and gyroid infill looks really neat). Overall, I would recommend it if you like making stuff and 3d modeling.

Also, my current CAD software is blender, so if anyone has something similar (or a plugin) that is better suited to making moving mechanical parts, leave a comment.

notsound··on Increased risk for all-cause dementia in people who abstain from alcohol
This seems like a classic case of correlation vs causation (I only skimmed the abstract). Let’s hope this doesn’t turn into another tabloid article.
notsound··on Kiwi Farms response to CloudFlare
This is incredibly dishonest. It took me less than 1 minute to find anti-semetism+transphobia (the t slur cries out as they strike you), and the n word (hard r) was one of the first comments.

I get why this site is so infamous.

notsound··on Ask HN: Why hasn't the ACH system been more abused?
Did you get that money back (I’m not to familiar with financial protections back then)
notsound··on Lawyers with brain chip implants will be better, faster and cheaper
Pwning the prosecutor will definitely be a thing in that world. Private investigators are already willing to hire hackers. Plenty of rich people will pay a lot to get away with crimes.
notsound··on Tell HN: Apple Pay works in non-Safari browsers in iOS 16 Beta 3
I am using the beta, and I was able to make a purchase with Apple Pay via something resembling an IAB.
notsound··on Mullvad is now available on Amazon
ATM, it doesn’t seem like mullvad is selling these in stores. If a scammer wants a quick payout with less chance to get found out, they will get the gift cards from a physical store.
notsound··on Scratch is a big deal
I think that tools like scratch and code.org really need to expand their ability to interact with 3rd party services. Code.org has a very limited http request API, but it is locked down to a couple APIs (I’ve looked at this feature, and I have… concerns over API key security) while scratch has no such capability. I really think that this type of thing helps ease the transition between block coding and using a written language. I do understand that there are some concerns with abuse, but I think that many of those concerns have effective mitigations.
notsound··on Heyyyyyyyyyyyy.com, a parody of the email service Hey.com
Note to the creator of this site: although this is definitely overkill, you can make the enroll link look like it points to a link like "https://heyyyyyyyyyyyy.com/register", and then play some audio with JS.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I doubt the RIAA would like it if you hosted the entire song on your site. Maybe just play the beginning, or better yet try to use the YT embedded API.

Code: link: <a onclick="return roll()" href="https://heyyyyyyyyyyyy.com/register">Register</a> Function: function roll() { let audio = new Audio("./path/to/rickroll.mp3"); audio.play(); return false; }

notsound··on Framework laptop water damage repair attempt using partial schematic [video]
This is a common argument against right to repair. It is worth noting that this only makes IP infringement a little more difficult. Reverse engineered schematics exist for many products.
notsound··on [dead]
This is a misleading title that spins the truth into fodder for a flame war. The survey asks for teachers to explain the barriers that prevent various specific marginalized groups from engaging in CS. Almost everyone can agree that STEM needs more diversity (including the posts author!). Also, “all but” is misleading. The question[0] includes more groups than women and minorities. It also includes low income/English language learners. Additionally, I cannot (without potentially messing with their data) review the rest of the surveys questions. After clicking the link to the survey, I was redirected to twitter, than a survey page. This survey page required me to be an teacher. I am not a teacher. It also offered compensation (not a small amount). [0] https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52110633174_157b30cf32_b...
notsound··on Ask HN: Why can’t I use emojis on HN?
This is very accurate. Hopefully everyone is chill and explains their reasoning.
notsound··on Chinese government to dump Windows in favor of Linux
I think the main reason they did this is to remove their dependence on a piece of closed source software made by an American company. Could you expand on what you mean by “They want to take away the linux/open source community”?
notsound··on [dead]
This seems like self promotion. The medium article is written by a competitor to signal. Someone should probably check out their source code.

Edit: apparently it’s a paid SAAS. I don’t think that they have released the server source code. It’s seems like their protocol will remain secure with a compromised server, but their criticisms of signal are weak and motivated by greed. Honestly, I don’t know if this is a hit piece on signal or themselves.

notsound··on I won free load testing
This is not the best solution (fail2ban and 2fa would be better) but https://github.com/skeeto/endlessh is a neat tool if you want to annoy someone with unsophisticated scripts. It’s worth noting that annoying a script kiddie might get you ddosed.
notsound··on Noto emoji, a new black and white emoji font with less color
A mono version of this would be really neat for the terminal and to a lesser extent code.
