notrustincloud··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
most industrial use robotics is actually this. from the pick and place in electronics and pharmaceuticals to weld and assembly for mechanical. the 'humanoid' robotics ideals are part of the same grift idealogy that pushes replacement of people in all kinds of roles. We are also not going to colonise the moon in the next decade either. Same reason, it a billionare pipe dream that doesnt conform to practical physics.

> Someone should not weigh 275 on SNAP.

Does SNAP need a better system to provide healthy food? yes.

Should employers be required to provide sufficient earnings such that employees do not require SNAP? Also, yes.

Is blaming employees who are on SNAP due to Walmart overhiring and cutting hours of at the threshold where the earnings would cross into full time with federally regulated benefits in order to pass the cost of operations to the public acceptable via absurd reductive reasoning a bald case of blaming the victims? Yes.

I'm not sure whether you are pretending that Walmart's practices are acceptable, due to a willful disregard for the complexity of the larger systemic failures that permit corporate abuse, or due to simple ignorance.

I'm not sure which looks worse, but neither makes you seem compassionate. Though the fat shaming does make you look like an ass.

notrustincloud··on Hepburn Romanization: How to Read Japanese in the Latin Alphabet
Thank you, thats a fun one. I particularly like the play on niwa and wani.

As for the other premise that modifying the phonetics to accomplish a simplification is based on a narrow view of the reason for retaining kanji literacy... there are important and substantive records for business, legal, and actively functional culture which exist in kanji and require kanji literacy to maintain agreement in society that is one of the differences between Japan and most other places. Who else still operates on contractual obligations from written records of the 17th century? Many current farming leases for large parts of the country are backed with the actual stamped, brush stroke written land records from then, stored at the prefecture on the original papers. Losing the ability to read and write kanji would be detrimental to ongoing cultural stability, and so it will not and should not be entertained by anyone living in that system. People living in a 'for now' mindset are irrelevant to actuality.

notrustincloud··on Hepburn Romanization: How to Read Japanese in the Latin Alphabet
Lol. Flashback to me having this exact conversation with a new Gaijin-kun アメリカの人 at about his second or third month in Tohoku...32 years ago. "They could just do it all in Romaji and save so much work." and even today some of my Japanese friends joke with me about how hard 漢字 can be, they laugh because they know its hard for them and admit they wouldnt do it if they had been born anywhere else.

So, it is absolutely baked in and kanji first. without kanji the following tongue twister is indecipherable.

Niwaniwaniwatori ga, uraniwanimoniwaniwatoriga iru.

i briefly lived in a house that had second floor laundry with no tray or floor drain. the first day after installing a new washing machine it flooded and did over 30k damage to carpet, drywall, and installed electrical. Insurance would not cover installing a floor drain or tray, and the owner chose to let that decision stand.

truly bizarre

notrustincloud··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
lol.

the only robberies that get 'attribution' are cases where the criminals get caught. i.e. low hanging fruit and thus these statistics skew to opportunistic events.

however, unplanned opportunistic crime makes for good promotional sales of window bars and strong locks. just like safes with electronic keypads.

very few such devices will stop a premeditated theft... and what is the rate of recovery for stolen goods in most jurisdictions?

notrustincloud··on For the cheap price of a permanent tatto, get access to job interview
i guess it would depend on how big the tattoo is and what it is/where it had to be. but if the job was a good fit and someone really wanted on the team...ok i guess. if the jobs a shite one this might be a way for HR to filter out people who are going to whine before they bother interviewing... i mean why hire whiners if you know the work is gonna suck.
notrustincloud··on For the cheap price of a permanent tatto, get access to job interview
i see. more 'i got a tattoo of my favorite coffee hang out because i thought it looked cool' and they got you to use the cold brew as a hook to spend more. and it cost them nothing for the walking Ad. naruhodo..."i see"
notrustincloud··on For the cheap price of a permanent tatto, get access to job interview
How many cups of cold brew until the 'break even' point for the cost of the tattoo? or did the coffee shop provide the artist and ink? im just curious about the economics of permanent advertising space. how many years has the shop been open? i ask because the failure rate for coffee shops etc is heavily weighted in the first decade of being open, so 'for life' might be a stretch.

notrustincloud··on As a dev how do I avoid exposing IP through coding assistants?
Have you ever heard the phrase, "shutting the barn door after the horses are gone" ?

This concern should be dealt with before leaking IP into the hands of the model owners.

It is a reasonable expectation that those owners will apply the same attitude to IP rights of the users of thd models that they have demonstrated during the training of those same models... that is to say, the willing disregard of anyone's IP in pursuit of their own enrichment.

It would seem that responsible protection of internal IP requires using hardware you own or at least fully control from the bare metal layer up, running models trained or distilled from public datasets which have been rigorously protective of privage IP rights.

or we can just all give up on the idea of knowledge and intellectual concepts as having any inherent limitability... our ideas are not 'the moat'.

The manner in which we engage with our customers will be the real moat. If anyone can recreate our software by asking the model to do the work, what is left for any business to differentiate from those copies becomes the ability to maintain a community of users/customers/participants.

notrustincloud··on Agentic Coding Is a Trap
This. All day long.

Code was never the scarce resource. Your neighbors' nephew could code a working website that would service the corner shops needs since ten years ago.

The value is and always will be the support and community behind the code.

HN isn't valuable because of a code repo, but because of the community of users and a steady hand cultivating the continued participation thereof. But this too has no real moat, something could change the zeitgeist and tomorrow it joins friendster and TheGlobe.com

notrustincloud··on UK to permanently ban future generations from buying cigarettes
"being an island" doesnot, in fact, make it easier to inhibit smuggling. One reason, the sheer number of small, unstaffed seaports and the volume of small fishing vessel traffic does in fact make it easier for unobserved ingress of materials under the guisd of small commercial and noncommercial fishing and small to midsize shipping. (see Scotland as major import of currently illicit drugs and undocumented refugees)

Adding another globally common and less regulated substance to the list of extrajudicial desireables simply equals a performance bonus and being low aquisition risk (already shipping other goods from places that grow tobacco and make cigs) as an incentive for the already very profitable and active operators of these networks.

From my perspective this would simply make being a smuggler easier and more profitable and be a value uplift for corrupt enforcement and a net reduction in collectable taxes... moving the revenue from comsumption tax books to black market coffers.

It's unfortunate when self-declared founders think they just need a developer to 'embody' the product they dreamt up... it's also unfortunate when the dev who is the one capable of delivering a product lets themself be treated like a cog instead of acting as a driver.

It sounds like the CTO should have been hired as a tech trainer for the existing CTO == you.

I see it again and again in early enterprise. When a dreamholder feels underpowered at the real task of delivering product, thdy build layers of admin to lower the product delivery team, burn through CapEx and OpEx and label that 'growth' and eventually the % promise is worthless.

Production teams beware of founders who just need a dev and not a team of partners. Ego > Ability & Manipulation skill instead of leadership capability.

notrustincloud··on What young workers are doing to AI-proof themselves
Reading a large codebase...perhaps if it is not too large. Understanding... why a tool exists, what is the motivation for its design, what the external human systems requirements for successful utilization of the internal facing tools... especially when that knowledge exists only in the memories of a few developers and PMs... not so much. Deep domain expertise is a long way from AI capability for effective replacement.
