I made it to 1000 karma and I think that's it for me here.

notkaiho··on Open-source tool translates and dubs videos into other languages using AI
Have you tried? It's a genuine "skilled labour" job, both the translation and the voice acting.
notkaiho··on Show HN: Godspeed is a fast, 100% keyboard oriented todo app for Mac
But we do exist!
notkaiho··on Ask HN: For devs, what activity other than the job most improved your skills?
Teaching others / pair programming where there is a disparity between seniority levels with the participants.
notkaiho··on Reclaim your focus with ~12 lines of bash
Now to have the presence of mind to not reach for the phone when this is on
notkaiho··on Harnessing heat from wastewater
Some of it is, and the picture editor could be excused for sticking with a generic "steam manhole NYC" stock image for illustration imo.
notkaiho··on Omg.lol: An Oasis on the Internet
Brilliant argument/username combo :)
notkaiho··on Using Mastodon as a RSS Feed Reader
You could, but you'd have to browse that, rather than getting notified in a feed you already monitor when new things are posted on sources you are interested in.
notkaiho··on UK gov website certificate issue
I'm not getting that at all from your link.
notkaiho··on Future Space Travel Might Require Mushrooms
Ah, Stamets. Far more interesting than the Star Trek: Discovery character that shares his name and interest
notkaiho··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
I still don't see how a digital copy can have the same brush texture as those of Dutch masters
notkaiho··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
but a digital image is not tangible, i.e. something you can have displayed, in a physical frame, in meatspace.
notkaiho··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
People continue to misunderstand even the above, and think that it's somehow actually conferring them the rights to all the bytes, and the results are hilarious: https://twitter.com/JackShawhan/status/1457951413368016899
notkaiho··on TheNFTbay.org – The Billion Dollar Torrent (All NFT's from Ethereum and Solana)
Or rather, the receipt of your purchase of a link. :P
notkaiho··on Tame Daily Distractions with a Precommitment Pact
This is a nice idea, and I am glad he includes the "precommitments are even better with a friend" section: An app is something you can always turn off. Betraying a pact you've made with another person is another thing entirely.
notkaiho··on Amiga A500 Mini Announced
Must be copy from a previous product they released.
notkaiho··on GitHub Copilot as open source code laundering?
Unless you were using structures directly from said code, probably not?

Compare if you had only learned writing from, say, the Bible. You would probably write in a very Biblical manner, but would you write the Psalms exactly? Most likely not.

notkaiho··on Using Civo Kubernetes to Gamify Twitter with Prometheus and Grafana
A bit of fun with Prometheus, Grafana and the Twitter API. What's not to like? Watch out, the Grafana image renderer is a real memory hog.
notkaiho··on Should Linux be called GNU/Linux instead?
I thought we'd hashed this out about 20 years ago and Stallman et al had retreated back to their basic-HTML caves to think about other things.
notkaiho··on Synology Starts Locking Drives for New NASes
What an sadly inevitable and short-sighted move.
notkaiho··on EU pushes for 'right to disconnect' from work at home
Depends a bit on age groups but membership is still pretty high [0].

The collective point is critical - unions negotiate wages as part of a tripartite arrangement in Finland. It's industry-wide sets of wages.

notkaiho··on AlphaFold: a solution to a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology
Who'd have thought that the kid who programmed Theme Park would go on to do this kind of work.
notkaiho··on GitHub Source Code Leak
To clarify, I agree with you, I used "sad" as a shortcut for "as much as you'd like it to be what you say, it's not"
notkaiho··on GitHub Source Code Leak
No, I'm very familiar with it. Questions of whether a law was broken are not questions of justice. They may say things about justice, or lack thereof, in what the law is or how it is interrogated, but they're not one and the same.
notkaiho··on GitHub Source Code Leak
The practice of law and litigation is not concerned with normative or moral questions of right and wrong, merely whether something illegal was committed. It's sad, but it's true.
notkaiho··on Rapid evolution: babies being born without wisdom teeth
I was born without wisdom teeth but I always thought my dentist was joking when she said I was the next step in human evolution when the fact was discovered.

It's not really evolution through natural selection as such, I'd argue - there's only minor competitive pressure from having wisdom teeth or not.

notkaiho··on New Mac ransomware spreading through piracy
And yet I've seen more than one thread comment say the humanities and media literacy are "not worth teaching"
notkaiho··on The History of Usenet and FidoNet
I remember dialing up to a local BBS that was a FidoNet node. The discussion forums/mailing lists had the same sense of urgency and intensity as today's Twitter hashtags or subreddits.

The amount of misinformation was about equal, too. I learned a lot of outright bullshit stated as fact reading those as a 12-year old. The difference is there's now zero limit to that nonsense being spread...

notkaiho··on Foam – A Roam Research alternative with VSCode, Markdown and GitHub
So, for you, an "alternative" would have to be a 1:1 replacement offering?

I'm glad that's not the common understanding of the word.

notkaiho··on Foam – A Roam Research alternative with VSCode, Markdown and GitHub
I only just got my invitation to Roam the other week and there is no free tier option.
notkaiho··on Lemmy, an open-source federated Reddit alternative, gets funding for development
I'd genuinely be curious as to some statistics about how many users do feel strongly about using an email / generating an email. I get that you feel that way, but to what extent is it a common feeling?
