notjoemama··on How to get coworkers to stop giving me ChatGPT-generated suggestions?
My gut reaction is no, but let me think out loud using ad absurdum to see if there is merit.

A five year old asks chatGPT how to achieve world peace. The response is not only possible but easily affordable on a short timeline. Do I care that a 5 year old got it from ChatGPT? I guess not. A part of me would want all the adults on the planet to stop and acknowledge how tragically ineffectual they are, but as far as whether the source matters...nope.

Good point. Thanks for letting me think through it.

notjoemama··on Lancet journal retracts article on hearing aids and dementia after prodding

Yikes. And the Lancet is generally regarded as a very reputable source. After reading the linked post I think I understand their initial defense, a little anyway.

notjoemama··on "Are We Automata?" by William James (1879)
Back to the concept rather than an individual, isn't part of the problem that STEM fields feed back into actionable ways, but perhaps philosophy doesn't?

For example, if a new exo-planet were found to have a certain chemical make up that our current understanding didn't agree with, that would go back to theoretical physics and mathematics, where they might discover a way to better describe the discovery. That then becomes a new model that allows us to recognize a new pattern of solar system formation, etc etc.

There's a practical application to STEM work. In what way is there a practical application in philosophy? Is it isolated to educating people on broader more complex thought?

notjoemama··on Ask HN: What software/tech blogs/magazines should I be reading in 2024?
If I did I wouldn't have seen their comment and given that perspective consideration. It's almost like...a reasonable balance is the best path. lol
notjoemama··on I'm skeptical of low-code
Seems like the generators and gem ecosystem in Rails already solved these problems. I can easily build a devise login in less than 10 minutes. Low code in Rails is almost instantaneous and you get tests automatically too.
notjoemama··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
And to underscore that, the CCP has openly said and planned to be the dominate financial, political, and military force on the globe. Their intention and actions are exactly to reduce not just US influence but all other influence. Neither France nor India take that stand point. A country hell bent on global domination has never worked anyway.
notjoemama··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
Good point, so when it’s a non-adversarial country then different reporting has the potential to be more honest reporting.
notjoemama··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
I’d like to see how pro Palestinian versus pro Israeli messaging occurs in traditional main stream news. I think I’ve been seeing pro Palestinian messaging being promoted much more from them and pro Israeli being demoted (more like omitted). This editorializion makes it hard to get a factual view about what’s going on.
notjoemama··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
Following your value statements, somehow we’re just supposed to ignore the CCP policy of US accelerationism? Like I said in another comment (here I will point out the paper says this) the difference is a political party in China manipulating content behind the scenes and Instagram manipulating content based on their publicly available content policy. Additionally the former is specifically geared towards CCP interests, not based on citizens outlook or morality, whereas Instagram attempts to cater to what they believe is the moral perspective of their users.
notjoemama··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
Maybe, but isn’t part of the problem contextual? Multiple US corporations have manipulated their content based on sensitivities that are promoted from specifically the CCP and not based on moral outlook of their population. It seems to me that’s a clear indicator of over bearing authoritarian control. Baring any value statements about political systems, isn’t there a political problem with a foreign entity controlling the content of another; particularly when an adversarial relationship exists?

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/is-tiktok-banned-in-china/

China has a separate app like TikTok and TikTok is not allowed inside China. I don’t see where in the PDF they address demographics but could you explain how you think that factors into this analysis? The numbers indicate they’re global like other massive social networks.

Also, is the issue with Instagram political in nature like TikTok and China? At first glance it looks like the distribution is controlled based on their publicly available content guidelines. Doesn’t that make it inherently different than non-public content manipulation?

notjoemama··on Nobody knows what's happening online anymore
I don’t think it’s a matter of choosing content that is served up by algorithm but by finding the content that the algorithm omits. I find I then have to listen for what are truth statements, for verifiable truth statements, and sift out the emotional language. In fact, the more emotional the tone, the more intention I attribute to the engineering of it being shown to me. This has resulted in me looking at and reading what I think is garbage sometimes, but I typically find some nugget of truth in it that helps me reason about why someone would think that way. Kind of erases the left versus right thing in politics.

Bingo. It's parenting. I won't go into how I can positively confirm this, but I can as a "captain" as reddit used to refer to it...

Wealthy areas still out fund raise, out tax, and out volunteer poorer areas.

notjoemama··on I Love Ruby
> The fact that finished code looks great and reads well doesn't balance the scales in my book.

IMO this is because software engineers both get bored and feel a need to compete. The more abstract they can make code the better (more safe?) they feel. That lets them play chess on their terms and eliminate the competition. But that's just my take, I may be wrong. Fortunately the most commonly used gems wrap this abstraction into usable APIs, and most have good documentation.

While this can be correctly attributed to ruby or the devs in its ecosystem, I've been on teams with staff using other languages and stacks that let their completion/anxiety fly making it hard to read and understand their code. I guess my point is it's a good critique, but it falls beyond the meta programming in ruby.

notjoemama··on How Africans are changing French, one joke, rap and book at a time
Evidently we're not allowed to notice anything change in the event it can be perceived as being racist? How is it those people are comfortable making such a statement online? There is bias, prejudice, and bigotry before you even get to racism. Conveniently supremacy is forgotten about unless a very strong character accusation is needed. I very much dislike how these "conversations" around race relations are occurring. I think I'm just starting to not care about how others perceive whatever I say. If they can't have a conversation without immediately suspecting the other party of racism then maybe they need to stay offline.
notjoemama··on NASA study finds life-sparking energy source and molecule at Enceladus
Using this same logic (in an ad absurdum context) we could also say you will never die because no one anywhere has any evidence that you have. That doesn’t falsify your statement, but using ad absurdum shows a statement is not true in every context. I tend to think that shows less conclusion and more investigation may be warranted. That’s how I think of it, but I could be off base and I’m open to being mostly if not entirely wrong.

Similar in the US. Fake sellers, drop shipping, selling used as new. The review systems is very bad. Sellers resubmit new products by editing old products to carry good reviews. We see “Sauté pan works wonderful” comments on Bluetooth speaker pages. The titles have gotten crazy long with every related and positive word. Reminds me of SEO from a couple decades ago.
notjoemama··on Adolescent boys struggle with disorganization and distraction
There's been good research in the education field around this problem. There are ways educators can augment their lessons to cater to boys. Unfortunately, not all educators do this and it remains an experience heavily weighted towards the behavior and temperament of girls. Graduation and college attendance rates are the opposite now of when a push to promote girls in schools occurred. Now might be the time to do the same for boys.
notjoemama··on Adolescent boys struggle with disorganization and distraction
Whenever I've felt impacted by those things I simply eliminate them. I had TikTok installed for a while. One weekend I realized I had been scrolling for 5 hours but to me it felt like maybe 90 minutes? That's when I uninstalled it. I felt like my ability to listen or pay acute attention for long length of time was diminished. Eliminating the app let me get back to the level of performance I had before. Self reflecting, there's maybe a certain kind of power in not-knowing, or knowing there is a lot of information I simply don't have to be aware of. Political news, well, news in general strikes me as a similar case. I know going into it "if it bleeds it leads". If I consume that, am I really getting a true picture of reality? Probably not. So is there really as much value in making sure I keep up with the latest points? I don't feel like it matters.
notjoemama··on Cardiometabolic Effects of Omnivorous vs. Vegan Diets in Identical Twins
Does anyone know what is in meat that aids in the pleasurable sensation (both psychological and physiological) of eating it? And, is there a way to recreate that in an all plant based meal without introducing the same problems this study shows? I'd be happy to switch to full vegan if I felt full in a similar way for a similar length of time along with a "Wow, that was really good!" experience.

Schedule technology free time? In a Minority Report kind of world that might not be enough, but limiting the avenues those take to influence seems like the obvious answer.

notjoemama··on Why a spritz of water before grinding coffee yields better results
I tend to think it's a side effect of having a curious mind. Anyone can saute onions. It's the curious that stop to ask, "Why does this taste so good and how can I do it again?" I think the best chef's are the one's that are curious in the same way.

notjoemama··on New theory claims to unite Einstein's gravity with quantum mechanics

notjoemama··on Amazon Unveils Graviton4: A 96-Core ARM CPU with 536.7 GBps Memory Bandwidth
Thanks for the perspective. I guess where I’m coming from is Google was a web search company. They’ve expanded into mobile and that also means their own mobile OS. They also got into browsers. Similar could be said about Apple. To me it’s less about vertical integration and more about expansion. Walmart used to be grocery. Then they added retail. Neat experience at the time as a consumer, but it killed local retail and has gut punched other national retail. Since then they’ve added auto service and pharmacy. At what point does someone come in and say, ok giant corporation, you’ve proven you’re so large you can enter into most if not all markets and decimate your competitors but it’s not a long term net benefit because we’re consolidating everything under too few umbrellas. Maybe I’m wrong to think that and I do recognize the benefits of scale. I’m just not convinced a civilization is thinking long term enough when I keep seeing small businesses go under and medium businesses get acquired (aka: bought up). It seems like this is a meaningful part contributing to the disparity in wealth.

notjoemama··on I worked in Amazon HR and was disgusted at what I was seeing with PIP plans
I’m going to rant for a sec…

Glad I’m not smart enough, nor care to put the work in, to pass a FAANG interview. I’ll stick to stupid crud land tyvm. This PIP behavior is just one more reason I consider their employment a kind of abuse. I’m human and I refuse to be compromised so easily. Pathetic (to me).

Closest I got was an interview at what I’ll call a molar company (want to be FAANG). I asked the HR screener if the technical code interview was based on real world code or just puzzles (I was going to walk if it’s just puzzle code, not good at fake stuff, haven’t practiced, and I wouldn’t be a good fit if that’s what they are looking for). She assured me the eng lead doing the interview used real code. So I call in, get on camera, where they used a coding interview website and it was a small sample with no context. It may have been from their code base but it was scrubbed and meant nothing to me. I asked for context but he said i don’t need it. I asked if i could change integer types to dates but he said no. Oh, and I was recorded but wasn’t told about that until I called in. So I was pretty pissed because I’m staring at a damn puzzle but this guy thinks the whole setup is a-ok. Well, fine. It might be. For them. I felt like I was lied to them provided no concession. So I hummed and hawed with no intention of solving his puzzle. I made him stick out the whole hour. I even explained at one point I wouldn’t write code like that because multiple conditions and multiple code paths converge on 7 lines. I explained the conditional logic was hidden and it would be better if it were more explicit, not just so it’s readable but because simplifying it by expanding the conditions makes it modifiable, supportable, and testable. Nope. I was told it was Ruby and it’s a Ruby thing to reduce logic in fewer lines of code. Yeah I get it. Inventing a complex trick makes you feel smart. I’m so sorry life is so boring to you.

I’m certain I looked like a fool to him. I don’t care. He had mannerisms that screamed “on the spectrum”. I think that’s fine…until smart people are put in charge and never get an ego check. Leading means leading people, not writing code more complicated than everyone else.

I’m obviously still salty about the whole thing. There’s another situation with people from a much larger software company came in and took a big dump at one of the smaller software companies I worked at. At this point I just don’t trust corporatized anything anymore. I think they’re liars. I think they chew up and spit people out. I think they put profit over humanity. I also think I need to go for a walk. Sincere apologies if I’ve offended anyone. Guess I just needed to get that off my chest. I do hope you have a good day.

notjoemama··on Senator calls for the public release of AT&T 'Hemisphere' surveillance records
What’s the term (may be colloquial) when law enforcement obtains information illegally but figure out how to fake or back fill the reason they know it so it becomes plausible in court they obtained the information legally?

It would be a more certain bet that they’ve done this with the AT&T surveillance than putting money in any cryptocurrency.
