notirk··on Apple in talks with Microsoft to make Bing default search engine on the iPhone
An application just appeared on my Verizon Blackberry the other day with a link to Bing. I clicked it and it wanted to install an app. I'm happy with Google on my Blackberry.
notirk··on NYTimes to start charging for access to their website.
I'm interested to see if paid subscribers have ads alongside their articles. I would consider paying it to contribute to good journalism AND have fewer ads (I am aware of AdBlock, however, I am also aware of how the Internet economy current works.)
notirk··on How Chipotle, Pinkberry, and others win big by doing just a few things well
McDonald's bought into it early, expanded it, then spun it off as an IPO. They don't own a majority stake (if any of it) anymore.
notirk··on Radiohead Says No More Albums
I have been thinking for a while that it was only a matter of time until bands started moving towards recording and publishing a fewer number of songs at a time due to digital sales. Albums make sense when you have to press a physical medium and distribute it across the country/world, not so much with a purely digital distribution.

The making of individual tracks also works well with pop music and its mentality, actually, it makes tons of sense, cutting costs by only writing and recording a few songs and spoon feeding it to the radio stations and the general public. The move away from albums is a total shame from an artistic view point. You'd never end up with masterpiece albums like "Dark Side of the Moon" with bands recording a few tracks at a time. I also connect so much of a band and their era's by albums too. Metallica and their change with the black album and everything after that. Even when I download new music today, I acquire full albums to hear everything else the band has made. I'm not looking forward to the day it's mostly individual tracks!

notirk··on For Many Americans, Nowhere to Go but Down
This guy worked for 2 decades paycheck-to-paycheck? He had zero savings after working for 20 years. He never bought a home and has one beat up car and one that is broken down? Did he spend all his money on smokes, beer, donuts, pepsi and gambling? Does he expect sympathy? Stop gambling, stop smoking, buy some cheap healthy food for your family, rice and beans perhaps? If you need beer (really, 8 in the middle of the day when you have no job?) buy a 6 pack for home, it's cheaper. Take any job you can get and network/work your ass off. None of this is complicated or hard to figure out. I feel bad for their children.
notirk··on Just Enough MBA to Be a Programmer
Nice review of the book and the concepts. I have just finished reading the same book, although I read it just as a primer because I am starting a part-time program at NYU in the fall. Although not a programmer, I plan to try and keep my technical knowledge up-to-date, it should help with the management and work with the engineers/developers.
notirk··on Business schools redefine hacking to “stuff that a 7-year-old could do” (2005)
I'm guessing this bug was fixed, but I applied to b-school this summer (starting part-time in the fall) and ApplyYourself was used for a few of the schools I applied to (NYU Stern, Fordham, NYU-Poly). From a front end/end user interaction point of view, it did not strike me as a well made system. I'm more an IT guy and not a programmer but I know a shoddy website when I use one. I applied to multiple programs at one school and the information could not be shared, it actually lost one of my applications at one point.
notirk··on Review my app: For you NYC Hackers/Subway Riders
I haven't bought it yet, but I probably will for my work Blackberry. A suggestion: mark where the elevators are for all the subways too. It would be useful for disabled people and also anyone carrying heavy items or bags. Hopefully you wrote down that information so you don't have to search all the stops again!
notirk··on Inside the World's Greatest Keyboard
I'm a contractor working on the new NYC 911 system and the supporting IT infrastructure. The current system, at the desktop level, is all old IBM AIX boxes and every single one has one of these keyboards. The monitors, mice, etc have all been replaced due to wear and tear, but these keyboards have put up with the abuse of 24/7 constant typing for the last 15-20 years. Pretty amazing. I wouldn't mind grabbing one or two once they cut over to the new system.
notirk··on Hands On with Mac OS X Snow Leopard (Developer Preview)
I don't feel this was too informative. I would have liked a comparison of clean installs of Leopard and Snow Leopard to compare the speeds and disk footprint, as well as just an upgrade. I'm also disappointed Apple didn't update the Finder.
notirk··on Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 Launches at Noon
9am PST. Noon EST.
notirk··on Amazon's Best-Selling Album Download of 2008 Was Available for Free
I knew the album was free and still purchased it, although not from Amazon, from the site NIN set up. I definitely still purchase albums of bands I like, why wouldn't you?
