notintokyo··on Ads in Gmail displayed as normal emails?
Anyone have an idea what is happening to their margins by the way? Who is competing against the same ad dollars as Google (FB seems a bit different), if cost per click is going down, why?
notintokyo··on Amazon has patented the milkman, etc.
Also, wouldn't all those hundreds of "box of the month"-style subscription sites where you can pick a product to send and get it periodically be prior art?
notintokyo··on Facebook introduces Pages-only view for News Feed
"See, this is how much spam you'd see if it was the default option to show all page updates"
notintokyo··on "Why don't you sell Triple Town for 99 cents and make tons of money?"
Big spenders or "whales" are much ignored when considering how to make money with a game. There really are people out there that are willing to spend thousands a month on a social game. You could even think that all the other players merely exist in the game to entertain that small slice that really brings in the money.

In my own apps with virtual currency I could see this only in a small way as the incentive was low to spend a lot, so this is more based on the experiences I have heard from fellow devs.

notintokyo··on There’s never been a better time to be a 14-year-old developer
If you compare making an iOS app now to making a successful Symbian game a few years ago, it's night and day.
notintokyo··on The game of life emulated in the game of life
I imagined I had given some thought to these subjects, but Permutation City did have new ideas. If you slow down a simulation to some ridiculous degree, the simulated beings don't notice. Even if you run the simulation backwards or in random order, they wouldn't notice. If you abruptly shut it down, they'll just continue finding the pattern somewhere.
notintokyo··on EVE players abuse faction warfare to produce trillions of ISK
How did you get started in organizing such a collaborating group, are you offline friends or used a forum? How does leadership work? I see no collaboration at all in the shooters I play, so curious about how that emerges.
notintokyo··on Ask HN: How can Non-US founders open a bank account in the US?
Not sure how Stripe does it, but could be based on utility bills or a social security number.
notintokyo··on How to travel around the world for a year.
My favorite was staying in a $10 / night hut in Thailand, next to a resort that probably cost $100 / night. It was near enough that I could use their wifi.

What were the newbie mistakes?
notintokyo··on How Whole Foods "Primes" You to Shop
Am I the only one really skeptical about that Derren Brown video? I think the real deal with that video is that it is just completely made up entertainment for the viewers, not an actual documentary of something that happened. That, or there is something not shown in it.

It seems rather unlikely to me that a few cues placed would make someone's behavior that predictable. What about the lifetime of other cues they have to draw from, or even just simple random whims that can influence the outcome?

notintokyo··on Google Correlate by Drawing
How is this so fast? I thought to compare charts like these you have to slide every chart over every offset to get the best match?
notintokyo··on Why most people don't finish video games
Many people with GTA or Red Dead Redemption might actually just ignore all the missions and explore the open world freely.
notintokyo··on The Massive Mystery In Google's Finances
Maybe these are mobile searches.
notintokyo··on Ask HN: Please help with feedback on my app (Adioso for vacations)
As an occasional stumbleupon user myself, I can say I'm not in the prime mood to book a vacation while using it. You probably prefer 10 people in vacation shopping mode than 300 people in lol I'm bored -mode.
notintokyo··on Buffett Says Social-Networking Sites Overpriced Ahead of Public Offerings
I remember reading they have an AdSense competitor in the works, but that initial tests showed it wasn't a good enough competitor yet to be released.

I don't know if it would be $10B though, even AdSense isn't quite there for Google yet. Assuming they could lure a big chunk of AdSense publishers away, I suppose it could be several billion though.

Maybe they'll release it just before IPO to show their true promise. Name predictions... FB AdConnect?

notintokyo··on Show HN: GetToLike.me - a place to meet people with similar interests
I spent way too long trying to get my likes to conform to allowed characters. It doesn't like periods in them or unicode characters, so I had delete 30% of my likes.
notintokyo··on Video of reactor 1 at Fukushima plant
In Japanese radio a professor was saying to get 100-200km away.
notintokyo··on Facebook bans Adsense in all applications, driving Google out of Facebook.com
Could this be what Facebook is planning? They have all the like info from users and plenty of more data beyond that, plus tons of business and developer contacts for leads.
notintokyo··on The Death of Adventure Games
Further shock: Half-Life is now over ten years old.
notintokyo··on Poll: What is the average monthly income from mobile apps?
~$15 / month total from three apps in the app store. Two paid, one ad-based. Half comes from ads.
notintokyo··on Useful apps for Hacker News
Manually curating now, I look at a list where new submissions arrive and click accept / deny after checking that the submission seems to work and isn't of lower quality than some submission from before. I think having several apps that do exactly the same thing isn't very beneficial.
notintokyo··on Useful apps for Hacker News
My challenge now is to grow the userbase of MetaExtension itself, otherwise this would become one of those forgotten apps and fail to fulfill its promise. Besides just throwing the app out there on the Chrome store and hoping for installs, I'm also trying to create linkbait-type pages targeted to certain websites. I did one for Digg and HN now as first tests. Digg was total failure, not one person besides myself even clicked the link.
notintokyo··on Useful apps for Hacker News
Currently you have to click over to the chrome store to read more about the apps. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to put some descriptions here too.
notintokyo··on Lasers Engaged: Anybots Are Now Shipping
I just figured that if I babysat the bot full time for two months, I could offer control of it at $1 / minute as the kickstarter project reward. Does that seem like a steep price though?

I'm in Japan so that might make it a bit more interesting. I'm concerned that the most interesting places wouldn't have a WiFi connection though, so I couldn't take the bot around temples or gardens. It needs 600kB/s upstream to work, I wonder if there's a way to get a mobile connection like that and share it to the anybot as a hotspot.

Update: Oh, it's US only for now.

notintokyo··on Lasers Engaged: Anybots Are Now Shipping
I was considering putting up a kickstarter project to get one, let it roll around outside and allocate usage time among the participants. But at $15000 it would be quite costly for the contributors, around $6 to get a weekly control minute allocated to you.
notintokyo··on Skype 5 for Mac blocks all webcam access by Flash. Skype says it is "by design"
Previous Skype extension for Firefox was also causing trouble for many websites. The plugin is common enough to cause a lot of grief.
notintokyo··on Quora's Notification Settings
What happens if you do this and a lot of users click the "report spam" button?
notintokyo··on Startups in Japan (Tokyo)?
You're in luck. There's a tech event happening tomorrow: http://tokyobiggesttechpartyever.com/2010/
