not1ofU··on Our conscious experience of the world is a memory, says new theory
holy crap, that was exciting. so much to say, but would only spoil it for others.
not1ofU··on Chainalysis CTO said blockchain is easier to trace than paper money
agree, because bitcoin / silk road and tor all popped up at the more or less the same time. and they all need each other as a boot strap.

Also - Satoshi - who? no one knows, really? Dread Pirate Roberts, name insinuates that the role (of site administrator) was handed over to him. There has been speculation that he was not the creator of the site. Tor - created by the Navy.

Why? - Black money / create an "open source", super duper encrypted method of communicating that cannot be broken (unless you control 70% of the exit nodes, whoopsies), get people invested in using it. How many of the dealers that supplied on silkroad where "free-lance" and scooped up later (along with their product and cash)

not1ofU··on BT CEO: Back to the office or risk 'disciplinary action'
>> BT also "believes in flexibility," the boss adds, and on those days staff can opt to work at home or in a coffee shop "or back at the workplace for those that want to!"

Wonder if there Support team / Security team would be allowed to work in a coffee shop.

:-o

not1ofU··on YouTube’s ‘dislike’ barely works according to new study on recommendations
I noticed that when youtube implemented the auto-play feature on the homepage, whereby you hover the mouse over a vid, it expands slightly and starts to autoplay the vids, that it actually puts the vids in to your watch history, even if you only watched a few (2-3) seconds. After this i noticed that my recommendations got crappier almost instantly. Basically, I would see something with a 'nice' tumbnail and hover it. Since then, everytime I open youtube, i need to go into the preferences and disable that shit, so not to pollute my history, and thus pollute my recommendations. I clear cookies when browser closes and this setting doesnt get saved, for some reason, google isnt smart enough to save these settings / preferences to my account like all the other setting, oh no, its controlled by a cookie.

This may have already been scailed back abit since I first noticed it, so maybe not 100% accuarate anymore, still pisses me off.

not1ofU··on YouTube currently testing 5 to 10 unskippable ads before video starts
its pretty clear from the way he makes those ads that hes not really endorsing them though

*edit - In my opinion

ChessBruh mentioned that this youtube channel has analysis of Hans' Games, focusing on centipawn loses after standard openers are filtered out:

The last 5 or so vids on that channel are in English, but youtube does a decent-ish translation of his other videos too.

not1ofU··on Ask HN: Do you browse the web with JavaScript disabled?
ah right, that makes more sense, so something like: 'I came here to say "no, I don't"; for the silent majority'
not1ofU··on Ask HN: Do you browse the web with JavaScript disabled?
I think he left out a word

"I don't [speak] for the silent majority"

I am assuming because this is a standard turn of phrase

not1ofU··on Ask HN: Do you browse the web with JavaScript disabled?
Yes, I have JS blocked everywhere with ublock - some sites get a pass (the 2 sites I use most frequently).

For times when I need to use a JS function (like twitter / HN search), I enable it temporarily.

not1ofU··on Rockstar Games confirms they were hacked by an outside party
Yes, - the tech is called UBA (user behaviour analytics.. or something) - over time it builds a baseline of what a user does in a typical day/ week/ month as part of their role, and if they deviate from that base pattern then an alert can be triggered on different thresholds - for example, why is a member of support downloading the entire production database (not that they should have access there, but you get my point)
not1ofU··on Asus Zenfone 9
Running linageOS 18.1 (Android 11) on a Zenfone Max Pro M1 (fresh install over 16.1 - which received regular updates every 2 weeks i think)

I beleive each model depends on the number of contributors working on image for that model, my phone is quite old yet it is now possible to upgrade (fresh install) to 19.1, which I will eventually get around to. I bought this phone specifically to use lineage. I use the camera, it works fine, and dont have any issues personally with the quality, although i am not really too bothered as long as its not shit, which it isn't IMO

not1ofU··on The Winamp Skin Museum is powered by a SQLite3 database with 1.2GB of metadata
The zapper function in ublock origin can be used to get around this limitation. Some people on HN alos talk about nitter, I havent used it, but maybe that would work too.

A lot of IOT devices (including smart TV's), completly ignore DNS
not1ofU··on Windows OS, Services and Apps: Network Connection Target Hosts (2021)
I am blocking shy of 2 million domains with Pi-Hole, and in fairness, the file I was using is 3.11mb and if I open it in Notepad++ it contains 106369 lines (about 40 of the lines are comments / empty)

I am also not sure at what size the issue with the service appears.

not1ofU··on Windows OS, Services and Apps: Network Connection Target Hosts (2021)
yeah but windows defender will wipe it clean evertime it updates.

Plus if you have a massive (>3MB) hosts file it causes other issues during bootup, which requiers disabling another service (dont remember which one off the top of my head, as I am using Pi-Hole these days)

not1ofU··on Cat S22 Flip Phone
Had an S35 a few years ago, bought it because of the waterproof factor. Worst phone I ever owned.

They dont provide android updates (at least for that model) and would just stop working randomly, I had to hard reset it at least once every 2 days, but sometimes twice in 1 day.

Might have been just my phone though as I knew someone else with the same model and they didn't have that issue.

not1ofU··on Top Mac app store dev abuses free with in-app purchase for bait-and-switch apps
Well apologies for assuming you were a random person. I conceed that reviewing app submissions would be quite challenging, but based on all the screenshots provided in that twitter thread, it doesnt look like any effort at all goes in to screening submissions. I would assume (correct me if I am wrong) that comment reviews would be flagged for inappropriate words, and if this assumption is correct, why not also scan / flag on the word "scam". After which, someone would install the app to a test system, and would immediately see that this is in fact a scam / against the rules, etc., etc., because of the immediate paywall thats presented in these examples.

My comment relating to apple brainwashing / jumping to their defence was not so much directed at you, and more directed at, everytime I see a valid complaint, there is always someone that chimes in with, "well thats because of x" (even if x= thats hows its always been done) and I do admit the bit that tripped me into writting a response was "work in progress" from your comment. They make more money than the entire GDP of a few countries, "work in progress" doesnt cut it.

As an ex-apple employee, I am even more curious on your thoughts on the video link I posted. Cheers

not1ofU··on Top Mac app store dev abuses free with in-app purchase for bait-and-switch apps
You would think that the non-stop flow of cash apple has at its disposal would be able to offset the issue.

I love how apple has everyone so brainwashed that random people just jump to their defence.

Do you have some excuses for this? I really would like to hear them :-D

not1ofU··on Launch HN: Optery (YC W22) – Remove your personal info from the internet
>> Also Facebook is a large responsible company (no major data breaches, etc.)

First result for: "facebook data breach"

"Data from 533 million people in 106 countries was published on a hacking forum earlier this month. Facebook said the data was old, from a previously reported leak in 2019. It has denied any wrongdoing, saying that the data was scraped from publicly available information on the site."

Dated: April 20th 2021

There was 100% phone numbers linked to real names and email addresses (at a minimum) in that breach. That may not be what you would consider to be major, however.

not1ofU··on Four-year-old Israeli child tests positive for polio, first case since 1989
Whatever makes you feel better. The main point is, no-one threats their friends like this. Your original comment didn't state that your friends believed that they had holy blood, but if they did, do you think its a good idea to have fun with their beliefs for your own amusement (and some stangers on the internet for imaginary internet points)? If world war 3 breaks out, you're probably gonna need some friends.

If these lies that you tell to your friends prevents them from getting vaccinated, then what?

I have a feeling and also some hope, that your story is just that, a long winded BS story to make yourself sound intelligent, because otherwise, you are just a sociopath.
