nostalgiac··on Show HN: No Bullsh*t Guide to Fitness (for Men)
Honestly, the first 3 words ("untrained men") of that study make me instantly reject any validity of the study.
nostalgiac··on Show HN: No Bullsh*t Guide to Fitness (for Men)
> Mention the dichotomy of strength vs muscle growth. Lower rep range focuses more on strength while higher rep range focuses on muscle growth.

As far as I'm aware there's still no conclusive evidence for rep ranges affecting muscle growth vs strength. I'm well aware of all strength program routines and follow this method myself, but would love a source.

nostalgiac··on The sad truth about depressive realism (2006) [pdf]
Thank you as well.

I've had depression my entire adult life, and have been in a very similar circumstance to you.

I've been trying to 'think my way out of it' for many years, but it was never achievable. Finally a few months ago I bit the bullet and went to see a Clinical Psychologist, who quickly recommended me to a Psychiatrist and have started medication. I've always been extremely skeptical of anti-depressants given the nature of them and all the talk surrounding them. However, The effects of this medication have literally changed my life in the span of about 4-6 weeks. It was definitely the missing link in what I needed to do 'fix' my brain (chemically) to get everything onto the right path.

nostalgiac··on Donald Trump’s Contract with the American Voter [pdf]
>ut Zillow says my house is worth more than double what I paid five years ago. You can't tell someone looking for housing there's no inflation.

You mean..it's gained value a few short years after a major crash? How surprising.

nostalgiac··on Don’t let your anger persist

nostalgiac··on A Digital Rumor Should Never Lead to a Police Raid
You shouldn't trust your memory...

There's only just under 4.3 Billion IPv4 addresses available. And you can write off a decent chunk of those as being not available for public use.

As of right now there are only 891 listed Tor Exit nodes.[1]

nostalgiac··on PowerShell is open sourced and is available on Linux
As a Windows Sysadmin, my life would be a living hell without PowerShell.
nostalgiac··on Facebook Posts Strong Profit and Revenue Growth
I think you are largely mistaken.

I work for a Not-for-Profit in Health Care / Aged Care and we have bought Samsung VR headsets to take into the Aged Care Homes and the elderly people there have absolutely love the experiences they had.

nostalgiac··on New ransomware written in JavaScript discovered
Yes, it has "Read & Execute". I don't see how this is related though.
nostalgiac··on A Meth Addict Gets Sober in Orange County Community Court

Watch this and see if you still think the same way.

nostalgiac··on New ransomware written in JavaScript discovered
Nothing new about this as they've been around for a long time.

As a sysadmin myself we have set all computers to open .js files with notepad by default (rather than the Windows Scripting Engine) so they will not execute if opened accidentally.

nostalgiac··on Why I turned down $500K and shut down my startup
Although the author phrases it as "70+ hours a week", my assumption is it's not the hours per week that he doesn't want to commit to it, but the total hours involved that it's going to require to solve the situation.

Whether that's 70 per week or 5 hours per month, the total amount of hours needed is going to be x,00 or x,000 - and that's time he simply thinks is not a priority or valuable to him.

nostalgiac··on Automattic Purchases .blog TLD for $19M
He wasn't commenting on the price. He was commenting on the actual traction that the website's have generated.

As in, how many 'generic' domains are actually being used to their potential?

Has anyone ever ordered from Pizza.com? (Or manually put that in their address bar other than right now?). I think you'd be surprised how low that number is.

nostalgiac··on Ephemeral is developing tattoo ink designed to disappear after a year
I don't see how at all.

Everyone (including myself) that has been tattooed KNOWS they were going to be permanent before they got them. If they wanted a removable option they wouldn't have got them in the first place.

A lot of the appeal of tattoos is because of their permanence and the commitment that resembles.

nostalgiac··on Count me as a systemd convert
Those aren't variables though, you are referencing specific files.
nostalgiac··on Count me as a systemd convert
That wouldn't really make sense at all.

Can you name any commands or interfaces that take the variable before the argument?

nostalgiac··on BYOT: Bring your own team
> The idea that all will be hired or none will be hired is kinda odd as well.

It mentions on the page "you’d all be free to accept or decline individually".

Yes this is a risky move by Stripe, but as they say, it's an experiment and i'm sure a lot of people would be interested to see how this pans out. Kudos to Stripe for taking the initiative to open this up.

nostalgiac··on Post-Mortem for Google Compute Engine’s Global Outage on April 11
Sounds good in theory. Until the bug that causes failure is also present in the monitoring system, and as such doesn't fail over to the backup system. AKA exactly what happened here to Google.
nostalgiac··on Brain scans reveal how LSD affects consciousness
It's not lazy to say something such as an LSD trip is ineffable. It's just how it is.

Sure a lot of the sounds, sounds and experiences may technically be describable. But it's the experience itself that is ineffable.

I've done LSD twice myself, and won't be doing it again for many years as I started suffering from panic attacks and pretty much an existential crisis as many others in this thread reported.

That said, I don't regret taking it at all. It definitely broadened my mind to how simple we take the world for granted.

nostalgiac··on Spotify raises $1B in debt with devilish terms to fight Apple Music
If they raised it as equity, they would have to give away a percentage of the company - which gives a 'valuation' to it.

So, if they raised $1B for 10% equity, the valuation of the company's worth would be $10B.

To avoid this hassle entirely, they raised it as 'debt'. The reason being, if they had to give away more than 8.5% of the company for the $1B, the company's valuation would have gone 'down' which can give off a bad vibe/look.

nostalgiac··on OwnTracks: Self-hosted, open source location tracking

nostalgiac··on Common Search – nonprofit search engine for the Web
I agree. The times I search on computers in the address bar and then wonder why the results are bafflingly awful, I realise the search is set to Bing or any other Search Engine. Re-typing the exact same phrase into Google and suddenly the top results are exactly what I wanted in the first place.
nostalgiac··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it awesome? Please include URL
Yes they exist. HotJar is an example.
nostalgiac··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it awesome? Please include URL
Small error at the bottom of your FAQ page, you mention it's free up to 5,000 clicks per day rather than per month.
nostalgiac··on Google Will Soon Shame All Websites That Are Unencrypted
Sad state?

How do you expecet them to know all the apps installed on your phone? And if they DID know this information, people would be up in arms about privacy or lack there-of.

nostalgiac··on Amazon's customer service backdoor
I'm not sure how true this is.

I registered a new domain with Namecheap just last Thursday and it had whoisguard automatically turned on.

nostalgiac··on Instagram's Million Dollar Bug
Reads to me that they are recording the access and no-one did access it.
nostalgiac··on Maintaining the integrity of our community
There's still the issue of the people receiving the content freely when they should have payed (even though it's not their fault).
nostalgiac··on Rocket Fiber Launches 100GB/s Internet Service in Downtown Detroit
Count me in.. all these other posts about anything fiber optic is insane.

Try Australia. $80/month for 8mbit/1mbit if you're lucky.

For reference, our business connection (50/50) costs ~$1200/month.

nostalgiac··on How my Apache server became a malicious free internet proxy
I understand it wasn't needed after the fact. But the entire point of the original post/resolution was to understand what was causing the problem (page time outs) - yet when faced with a second problem, he chose the 'easy' route of just uninstalling it (unalike his resilience to pay for his IP change or wiping the server).
