norealidea··on Napster: A New Killer Internet App (1999)
Digital "ownership" is just as temporary, and when "buying" digital products online (or, technically, even physical copies of media), you're only paying for a license that can be revoked at any point. Just because they don't hunt you down doesn't mean you properly own something.

There's a reason SaaS took off, just like media streaming took off. Convenience is higher on the list of priorities than ownership. If they take my stuff away, I'll just switch to media that isn't barred from public use.

norealidea··on Tell HN: Aaron Swartz's website is offline
1) That's not how the burden of proof works. 2) This is not a factual or rational thought in the current system. every time the Libertarian or third party does well in an election(like in the last election of 2016), it shows those in power the ideals that are looked at when choosing a candidate. The problem does not inherently lie in the system, it lies in the people telling each other that voting third party is a waste. That train of thought is what is ruining this country(USA), because it's a slippery slope to complete apathy of the system.
norealidea··on I Used to Be Homeless
But they usually don't. They work harder, longer, and more efficiently than most americans and there's just as many people paying them fair wages as not. Also, when you have 6 working people in a house, it's a lot easier to justify the costs. How many roommates do you have working full time jobs and contributing to everything in the house?
norealidea··on Show HN: FreePizza.io – free pizza for usergroups, meetups, hackathons, talks
What else surrounded that? What was breakfast and dinner? There's a lot more than lunch in a day. 2 slices and a can of pepsi is probably around 700-800 Calories.
norealidea··on Show HN: Clipboard Plus, free and open-source clipboard manager for Windows
its synced to your personal Microsoft account, only if your email is tied to your OS. How is that a "utmost crazy privacy problem", plenty of people do the same thing with cross platform tools.
norealidea··on Show HN: The Vue.js Handbook – Free 120 pages ebook
SF isn't the only place programmers live.
norealidea··on Ask HN: What’s your “Everyone has a price” experience?
when you're in your early twenties and making a ridiculous amount of money, ethics takes a far back seat.
norealidea··on Michael Jackson Estate Turns the 'Fair Use' Tables on Disney
it comes to a point where Piracy isn't just about caring, but from old habits. What are they going to do if I don't pay their piracy fines? Find me and put me in jail for something they cannot prove even happened?
norealidea··on Free Music Archive
You just said Flac is for lossless backup. Losslessback is not equal to the user experience.

Kind of selfish of you to think Flac should be a standard where some people wouldn't even know what it is.

norealidea··on Ask HN: Which non-programming books are a beneficial read for programmers?
the little prince is really one of the best books I have ever read about enjoying life while subsequently understanding the decisions I make/Will make/Have made.
norealidea··on YouTube Stars Being Paid to Sell Academic Cheating
If you're cheating in a 101 class, you have much bigger problems than worrying about being expelled for committing fraud in a 101 class. The thing is, that isn't where people are cheating(probably), and finishing a BS in computer science is relatively easy. I'm going to stand by the fact that the hiring process is flawed, the college system is flawed, and our public school system is flawed. There's nothing motivating anyone to learn but themselves.
norealidea··on Ask HN: Interview with Microsoft tomorrow, how to prepare best?
Or he didn't ask.
norealidea··on Mathematics I Use (2012)
So, are you still afraid of math?
norealidea··on ‘I Fundamentally Believe That My Time at Reddit Made the World a Worse Place’
What right leaning subreddits have been banned in contrast to extreme left? Inciting hate and violence is a reason to be banned, and that seems a common thread in those subreddits.
norealidea··on Be likeable or get fired
While I agree with you, reading this showed and ego coming from the writer, but in his place probably should have handled it better in a new environment. What I was reading felt more skewed towards "I was right and got fired, but made no attempt to communicate sans telling people they were wrong".
norealidea··on ‘I Fundamentally Believe That My Time at Reddit Made the World a Worse Place’
right, because the rules of the subreddit indicate that. The subreddit has its own mods that follow its own rules. And the Admins of reddit do not get involved unless they're peventing a lawsuit. Which is kind of how the internet should be run. Free and safe from mass control, but communities controlling themselves.
norealidea··on Consumers are frustrated by endless streaming services
bittorrent itself is not illegal.
