nomy99··on Deloitte tells staff they can work from home forever
So I interviewed at Facebook, multiple banks, along with my current gig at ”nyc company”, and they are all heavily enforcing returning to the office. This news seems contradictory to the reality I’ve witnessed
nomy99··on America, Stop Moving West
Moving to Chicago from nyc because of lower rent
nomy99··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
Yes, I found a job in chicago while interviewing from nyc. It's a great time to find a new job.
nomy99··on “Great resignation” wave coming for companies
I am going to resign today. I was hired as UI developer during the pandemic, and my employer was kind enough to not let me go when the project ended during the pandemic. Now I'm moving to chicago from nyc to do UI work.

The pandemic has been hard because I never enjoyed the work I was doing, but I grinded through it considering it was hard to find a job.

Nyc isn’t for everyone, I’m glad you found an alternative
nomy99··on America has a drinking problem
Absolutely. With the pandemic and the social isolation, alcohol has kept me going. I know the judgemental people will label me, but honestly nothing else has helped. In the pandemic I tried many other coping mechanisms, exercise, social media, etc… but alcohol, strangely enough kept me grounded through this mayhem. I am pretty sure I’ll wean off it when the world gets it’s shit together.. pardon my French
nomy99··on Employees are quitting instead of giving up working from home
I'll never work from home. I'll go so far to say that I'd only work for companies that require you to come in. My experience WFH has been abysmal.

nomy99··on Ask HN: How can I move away from engineering?
I haven't decided which field I want to go to, but someone here mentioned law. That sounds fascinating to me, and a complete different thing. I am hoping my analytical skills can be used at a firm.
nomy99··on Ask HN: How can I move away from engineering?
I'm a software engineer. I have an Electrical Engineering degree from an ivy league school (if that matters. Personally I think it doesn't).

I am VERY interested in your comment regarding law. Thank you. Can you give me any references on some firms I can contact?

nomy99··on Ask HN: How can I move away from engineering?
That's a very specific market, and I suppose your 25 years of experience in the field helps you market it. I don't think I can sell anything (other than my skills), which I don't want to do anymore.
nomy99··on Ask HN: How can I move away from engineering?
What do you sell?
nomy99··on Avoiding Leetcode Anxiety
I'd like to also share this resource: https://labuladong.gitbook.io/algo-en

It is a systematic approach to mastering Leetcode

nomy99··on Avoiding Leetcode Anxiety
Also try solving a question in Python then in C++, you will notice drastic performance differences. That is also fun.

The testcases leetcode has is impressive. I know that I can never generate those cases in my spare time or with other tools, so its also enjoyable to watch your code work through it.

nomy99··on Avoiding Leetcode Anxiety
I'm a simple man, I see "Accepted" and my solution is faster and more efficient than "X%" it makes my day. Maybe I am just the type of person who just enjoys coding for fun.

Also I forgot to mention, one of the reasons I started doing leetcode was our team started a new project in python. Having never written a line of code in it, being a javascript developer for most of my career, I needed the shortest path to proficiency. Solving a bunch of leetcode questions in python also helped me get a grip on the language.

nomy99··on Avoiding Leetcode Anxiety
I'd rather breeze through a process I've no control over. Don't hate the playa, hate the game!!!
nomy99··on Avoiding Leetcode Anxiety
I started doing leetcode when the pandemic hit. I wanted to be ready in case I got fired and I have to do an interview... surprisingly I fell in love with it. I am one of those ppl that writes codes in their head, so I just look at a problem and go on with my day until I have a solution. Then I write it and test it out.

It's enjoyable to me, and I have been forced to learn a lot of CS concepts I had forgotten and techniques I wasn't aware of.

I don't approach it with the drudge of performance, but just as something I do now. Like other things in my life, basketball practice, namely.

I am pretty sure eventually I'll be in a position I can breeze through an interview if I really wanted to, but that's not my goal anymore out of leetcode.

nomy99··on Best practices for remote software engineering
So you are telling me a person suffering from ADHD is not accountable for the $ lost in productivity. If I had ADHD, just for survival, I wouldn't ever let my boss know that I have this condition which is costing his company X amount of dollars a year.
nomy99··on Best practices for remote software engineering
Honesty doesn't replace accountability. Wasting three days is a long time to just be "procrastinating"
nomy99··on Best practices for remote software engineering
I'm not sure if it's wise to publicly post this "taking advantage of that freedom and focusing instead on podcasts or reddit for 3 days to avoid 3 hours of writing unit tests."
nomy99··on Dan Kaminsky has died
I’m one of those people who never knew you. Ironically, Your death brought forth your achievements for me. I’m impressed and I wish I had interacted with you. RIP
nomy99··on Dan Kaminsky has died
I guess there really is no such thing as a free lunch.
nomy99··on Ask HN: Should I get a Masters in Computer Science?
I have an electrical engineering degree. But I graduated in 2011, so I'd have to brush up on the math if I pursue the masters degree.
nomy99··on Ask HN: Should I get a Masters in Computer Science?
It’s just that there are some great online programs now, and being “pandemic” adjusted, along with an hybrid work model, I think I can earn one. Also I always wanted to get into a top tech company, and I’m thinking this could help.

As someone else posted, I also love coding but I enjoy the theory equally as much; if not a bit more

I wish I resonated with this. It would definitely make me a better programmer because I would code a lot more. I unfortunately look at it like an exhausting thing that I only do when I have to. Most of my time is spent playing basketball or watching hbo/netflix/youtube =(
