nomemory··on Ask HN: Who are your most treasured live coders?
Tsoding has nice YouTube videos on original topics: customizing TempleOs, writing a snake game in the bootloader, writing FE code in C. It's virtual insanity at its finest.

nomemory··on The Sinusoidal Tetris
Hello, I've added some buttons so you can look on it on mobile.
nomemory··on The Sinusoidal Tetris
Hello, this game is part of an article I am currently writing. I will add there the "optimal" sinusoid :). Thank you for the idea.

nomemory··on Markov Chains are the Original Language Models
I had an exam at Uni where one of the problem was related to Markov Chains, brings back memories.

Also, for a lab we've used Markov Chains to create 'music'. The results were terrible, but the exercise was good.

nomemory··on Ask HN: What's your oldest piece of electrical equipment?
A soviet radio the size of small dinner table from the 50s. It's actually nice, looks like furniture.

I will reply to you here.

Well, for Hungary, you have John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner, who both finished an Elite School in Budapest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasori_Gimn%C3%A1zium. And you also have Erdos.

Of course, you might say they were Jewish, but they are the product of the Hungarian School of Mathematics.

nomemory··on The math exams of my life
The sources are scarce at least for everything that's older than 2010, but I did started to collect exercises like this from various forgotten places.

I plan to put them into a github repo this month.

Sorry for the translations. I will try to check them again, and maybe to some corrections.

nomemory··on The math exams of my life
Author here, it's probably what I did, but i am sure i also had to memorize quite a few radicals, and also multiplying numbers up to 40X40 + other tricks to multiply fast.
nomemory··on The math exams of my life
Quite a lot Jewish people were influential in mathematics in Romania.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leon_Birnbaum

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Emmanuel_(mathematicia...

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meinhard_E._Mayer

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Jacob_Schoenberg

And many others.

My grandfather who become a math teacher eventually had a Jewish math teacher. So was my grandmother's brother, he had lots of Jewish math teachers.

Unfortunately things become bad during ww2, but before that Jews were overly represented into teaching math.

nomemory··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
I love your blog, and if i am not mistaken your capsule.
nomemory··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
My blog is www.andreinc.net . I write mostly about undergrad cs curricula, math, and random thoughts going through my mind. Because of a busy life, i dont have time to write more than a few articles a year.
nomemory··on To save the news, ban surveillance ads
Unfortunately, only a minority of people care enough about privacy to do something against the invasive and immoral practices that are slowly killing the internet.

Most of us have nothing to hide, and that's the exact mechanism on which the internet marketing leviathans operate.

Nothing will change, people will still use them free services and install the data harvesting app. The battle is already lost.

nomemory··on World of Goo Remastered
This is why I've subscribed to Pay Pass. The games available don't have microtransactions and are usually more than plain android cash makers.
nomemory··on World of Goo Remastered
That's a game that kept me hooked more than a game should keep a human captive. I have it on Steam, I don't see any reason to burn some hours on it on the phone.
nomemory··on Has HN Changed? I assume it's just me
This is the reason I've decided to upvote only personal blogs of people that are actually writing about something that's not the next big thing, it's not trendy, it's not a buzzword. The random the article is, the arcane the subject is, the better.
nomemory··on The fastest math typesetting library for the web
It is fast, I was previously using mathjax, and for a significant document I had to wait for a few seconds until the formulas were parsed and rendered. For the same document with katex, everything happens in less than a second.
nomemory··on Surprise computer science proof in combinatorics
That is a good question for a kid.

Ask him back, if it's discovered, where was it "stored" all this time.

If it's invented, does it mean that other potential sentient species will have a different math than ours ?

nomemory··on We're never getting rid of ChatGPT
I know it's popular to mention singularity in the context of AI, but i am afraid it doesn't do justice to the "real" singularity which is a mystery of both scientifical and mystical proportions.
nomemory··on Finding Java Thread Leaks with JDK Flight Recorder and a Bit of SQL
Java is not the most appealing programming language, but you've got to love the JVM, the standard library, all the libraries and frameworks, plus the tooling around the ecosystem.
nomemory··on Demystifying bitwise operations, a gentle C tutorial
I am not sure if this is all that original, I am sure what other have seen that before. For me it clicked when I was redoing the graphics.

What it's more interesting is that symmetry is specific to numbers in general, and the way we represent them. As an exercise if you use base 3, and plot more numbers you will also see hidden patterns.

Thanks for noticing that section.

Thanks, I wanted to post it after it was finished and revised. I also wanted to add more sections, but somebody was faster than I expected (thanks for posting it tod!). I suppose Getting to hn will add some valuable feedback in the first place.

I will probably add some more content in the coming weeks.

nomemory··on Ask HN: What to do about ‘Good at programming Bad at Leetcode’
I am not particularly good at competitive programming, but at some point I did invest quite some time into it. Contrary to my username I have a pretty decent memory and I can remember easily if I've solved something similar.

At some point I've interviewed for a company who gave me four exercises to solve in an hour. Normally, it would've been impossible to solve them without previous knowledge. Funny part is that I knew the idea for all 4 and the only difficulty was to write things quick enough so I can finish everything in time. 57 minutes later, I was finishing all of them, to the surprise of the interviewers who were watching me coding.

I had the all time best score for that company, and everyone thought of me I am some kind of genius, which was certainly not true, because I know my limits, and I am far from it.

Nevertheless, everyone was a little disappointed by me in the next 6 months. I was quite junior, and had junior problems.
