nomagicbullet··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I would say Italo Calvino scratches a very similar itch like Borges and Chiang.
nomagicbullet··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
> I especially love that Gross taped his login and password directly on his keyboard, which makes the object more relatable. I may never know what it’s like to manage billions in assets from a Bloomberg Terminal, but I absolutely understand the trial of remembering my passwords.

Wow, what a great history artifact. It is hard to look at this and not wonder where did we go wrong. Everybody _should_ know better, and yet here we are. And now immortalized in the National Museum of American History for all posterity.

nomagicbullet··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
"Tower of Babylon" is an excellent story.
nomagicbullet··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Agree with that assessment
nomagicbullet··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Wow! Nice coincidence. I've read "The Memory Police". I will add "Earthlings" to my queue. Thanks for the recommendation
nomagicbullet··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I'm jumping across several short story collections:

- "Exhalation" by Ted Chiang - "Ficciones" by Borges - "I have no Mouth and I Must Scream" by Harlan Ellison.

I'm also slowly plowing through "The Big Book of Science Fiction" edited by Jeff and Ann Vandermeer.

I love short speculative fiction. And the above are among my favorites.

nomagicbullet··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
This is one of the subplots of Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die. Great film.
nomagicbullet··on Flock cameras used to arrest a child for playing on a swing?
I don't think we understand yet the kind of world we are building.

All the small decisions we are making will shape our future: algorithmic decision making, social network broadcasting and "self-reporting", light-speed meme transmission, always-on audio and video surveillance... the list goes on and on. One day we'll wake up to see we've build a jail around us we can't escape.

nomagicbullet··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
Are you speaking from personal experience or do you have data to back that up? I honestly would love to see some study around this. I haven't done my research but --anecdotally-- everyone around me is ok with it or even enjoying AI to some degree. No strong stances either way tbh.
nomagicbullet··on The Sound and Music of 'Hyper Light Drifter' [video]
For those who would like to watch in Youtube (and save it to their playlists?):

nomagicbullet··on I gave Claude free time after client work – it asked for a blog
Fascinating. I don't think you meant it this way, but it took me almost until the end to realize I had transposed the roles of human and ai. It made for a very interesting first read and second read.
nomagicbullet··on Do not apologize for replying late to my email
They could be giving you a subtle hint to not send messages outside of work hours.
nomagicbullet··on Top downloaded skill in ClawHub contains malware
This is a tough one in my opinion because the content of the article is valuable. Yes while reading it i noticed several AI tells. Almost like hearing a record scratch every other paragraph. But I was interested in the content so I kept reading mostly trying to ignore the "noise". The problem I fear is that with enough AI generated content around, I will become desensitized to that record scratching. Eventually between over-exposure, those who can't recognize the tells, people copying the writing they see..., we might have to accept what might become a prevalent new style of writing.
nomagicbullet··on Show HN: isometric.nyc – giant isometric pixel art map of NYC
> But at the end of the day, the last 10% always takes up 90% of the time and, as always, the difference between good enough and great is the amount of love you put into the work.

Nicely put.

nomagicbullet··on Shackleton and the Endurance Expedition: Photos from the 1915 Disastrous Journey
I’m reading "Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage" and was surprised to find such a rich collection of original photos from the expedition.

(Title shortened to fit HN limits.)

nomagicbullet··on The Dilbert Afterlife
I don't find open spaces noisier than cubicles but I am able to easily block out distracting sounds.

I am interrupted, and when I am is generally somebody giving me a useful quick update or an informal greeting from an office buddy when they notice I make welcoming eye contact.

I don't think I ever felt a lack of privacy in the office or expected it in any way? I wonder what kind of privacy I would need that the restroom doesn't cover, I'm sure there are some instances since it's been called out.

nomagicbullet··on Ask HN: Share your personal website
Here is where I share science-fiction short stories and flash fiction:

nomagicbullet··on Cowork: Claude Code for the rest of your work
About 100,000 rolls on average.

About 2.7 rolls per day for 100 years

nomagicbullet··on Find SF parking cops
> RIP > In rare lightning speed, the SF government changed their site within hours of this site going live. I can't get data from it anymore.

That was fast! I missed it.

nomagicbullet··on Laid off for the first time in my career, and twice in one year
Thank you for introducing me to the Ventriloquist and Scarface. Absolutely bizarre characters. I love it.
nomagicbullet··on HowStuffWorks founder Marshall Brain sent final email before sudden death
My initial reaction reading this (I had t heard the news) was disbelief. How could someone so accomplished and influential be driven to such despair over what seems to be an interpersonal workplace conflict? But the more I think about it, the more I get it. Many of us pour our identities into our work. It becomes more than a job. It’s our purpose, our sense of self. When that’s destabilized or taken away, the fallout can be devastating.

It’s a sad reminder of how vulnerable those who care deeply about their work can be in the face of toxic or unjust environments. Passion and commitment, when met with indifference or hostility, can push anyone to a breaking point.

nomagicbullet··on Control iPhone with the movement of your eyes
There is a specific accessibility setting to reduce motion and prevent videos from autoplaying on iOS.

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion and turn on "Reduce Motion"

nomagicbullet··on IRS Direct File to open to all 50 states and D.C. for 2025 tax season
> absolutely everyone hates doing their taxes and the whole shady process behind it all.

I like preparing and paying my taxes.

> The IRS should have to declare what they think you owe before you pay or submit any paperwork

Agree.

nomagicbullet··on Passkeys: A shattered dream
I agree, framing it as a mental model makes sense.

Here’s the issue: when a site rejects my password, I understand the potential reasons—wrong site, wrong account, or forgotten password update. But what does it mean when a passkey fails? How can I resolve this? Is it even fixable?

My lone attempt to use a passkey for login involved an unrecognized fingerprint authentication, leading to repeated failures and ultimately, a return to traditional passwords due to the opaque nature of passkeys.

For now, I’ll stick with what I understand.

nomagicbullet··on Florence museum won suit against publisher that used Michelangelo's David image
> In a statement, the museum claimed that by “insidiously and maliciously [juxtaposing] the image of Michelangelo’s David with that of a model,” the publisher was “debasing, obfuscating, mortifying, and humiliating the high symbolic and identity value of the work of art and subjugating it for advertising and editorial promotion purposes.”
nomagicbullet··on Advice to young people, the lies I tell myself
I very much liked this quote on choosing happiness:

> In the short term, you would be much happier if you accepted and admitted to yourself that the reason you don't have what you want is simply because you do not want it badly enough. The sooner you accept that, the happier you'll be. Then the next question is: Do you want to be happy or do you want to achieve what you want?

nomagicbullet··on How to make history with LLMs and other generative models
The idea of LLM-powered personal assistants sounds like a game-changer (eg. an AI buddy that not only helps with work tasks but also offers real-time advice and fact-checking during conversations)

Can't wait to see how this evolves. It has the potential of becoming as ubiquitous as a smartphone.

nomagicbullet··on How to Finetune GPT-Like Large Language Models on a Custom Dataset
Is there are Dreambooth equivalent for fine-tuning ChatGPT as there is for Stable Diffusion? I have to imagine that if we can add custom data to a DL text-to-image model, we should be able to do the same with a text-to-text one.

Edit to add: There are a number of Google Colabs for fine-tuning SD and I wonder if there are (or if it is technically feasible) to accomplish the same with other txt2txt models.

nomagicbullet··on Adobe Tells Users They Can Get Sued for Using Old Versions of Photoshop (2019)
I own both Affinity Photo and Pixelmator Pro. I find the UI using Pixelmator to be more user friendly. This could be because I come from many years of using Photoshop and I found the way Affinity deals with layers and effects to be counterintuitive to me.

That being said, both products are solid and likely a matter of personal preference or specific feature needs.

nomagicbullet··on StableStudio, an open-source release of DreamStudio
Some ideas:

AI platform - They could charge a subscription fee for access to premium features on its open-source StableStudio platform.

Consulting services - They could charge businesses for its AI and machine learning consulting services on a per-project basis or on a retainer basis.

Acquisition - A larger company with more resources could acquire Stability AI to scale its operations and reach a wider audience.
