nols··on A Cruise Ship Called “The World” Is a Luxury Home at Sea for the Super Rich
Not really, it wouldn't even be feasible to replace the on-board electric with solar, ignoring propulsion. Using the information from here[1] it has five generators. One generator produces 4308kVA, and one of these [2] solar panels produces 0.296 kVA. So ~15,000 solar panels to replace one (of five) generator.

nols··on Ask HN: Sell my startup for $14M because I can't raise $2M?
It's a team of people, so the $14MM wouldn't all go to a single person. It's certainly a lot of money, but it may not be retire in comfort money.
nols··on What does an innocent man have to do to go free? Plead guilty
That many people don't go to prison, they get fines or community service or probation.
nols··on What does an innocent man have to do to go free? Plead guilty
What if someone did it and is willing to admit it? Still force them to go to trial, a trial that may take longer than the punishment for their crime? And victims too, say someone robs you, now you're forced to take time off work to attend a trial for the person that admitted to robbing you and also doesn't want a trial.

Plus there would need to be a massive expansion of the court system to accommodate trials for everyone. Where's the money to pay for that going to come from?

Criminal justice reform is necessary, removing plea deals completely is foolishly short sighted.

nols··on New t-shirt sewing robot can make as many shirts per hour as 17 factory workers
That $0.33 is cost of human labor, the article doesn't mention how much the technology contributes to the cost of the clothing.
nols··on Tesla's 'long-haul' electric truck aims for 200 to 300 miles on a charge
This wouldn't be suitable for long range OTR trucking, but great for shorter regional trucking. Delivery drivers like UPS or Fedex don't hit 200 miles a day and other trucks in denser areas also travel shorter distances and diesel fumes in urban areas is a huge concern. There are plenty of use cases for an electric truck that can travel 200 miles, even if it won't immediately replace diesel or gas.
nols··on How BuzzFeed’s Tasty Conquered Online Food
You may not be in their primary audience, but they're pretty popular. I just looked at their Facebook page and it has 87 million followers.
nols··on MIT’s gas-powered drone is able to stay in the air for five days at a time
This is meant to be portable, weighing only 150 with fuel and payload.

nols··on Uber’s Anthony Levandowski out as Advanced Technologies lead amid legal fight
He's one of the top experts in self driving technology, a motorcycle he and a team built in college is in the Smithsonian. I can see Uber wanting to keep him on unofficially.
nols··on Uber gets sued over alleged ‘Hell’ program to track Lyft drivers
The CFAA is absurdly broadly worded, so much so that it's extremely easy to wield against people accused of violating it. The DoJ uses it as their hammer, if they targeted everyone who violated it the jails would be overflowing.
nols··on A Facebook bot purge clobbered USA Today
People follow pages and join groups and all that, so bots have to do that as well to blend in. It's to make the bot more legitimate.
nols··on “Millennial savages me on Glassdoor for giving constructive feedback”
If he graduated college in 2004 then he would be in his mid-thirties and considered by most definitions to be a millennial himself or very close.

I shouldn't be surprised that a business owner would publicly trash someone to make themselves feel superior after seeing it happen so often, but how could he not see how embarrassing this would be? No wonder he needs a communications specialist.

You and other people found a good deal, it's not like you're jumping on a bandwagon because it's cool.

nols··on Amazon Cash
Banks and credit unions generally use Chexsystems, which is for banking history not the credit score from the three companies you'd usually think of.
nols··on Amazon Cash
Credit unions have similar, maybe slightly lower, standards for opening accounts. They don't want to be stuck with overdrafts either.
nols··on [dead]
That's stated in the article
nols··on Ask HN: What do you want to see in Ubuntu 17.10?
BQ put out an Ubuntu tablet that is similar to what you're talking about, I've heard bad things though. However that is the goal of Ubuntu for mobile.

nols··on Automation is set to hit workers in developing countries hard
People said the same thing about companies offshoring jobs, consumers like low cost, acceptable quality items, whether it's American labor, offshore labor, or robots.
nols··on Uber Freight
"Unlike Uber, which takes a cut from every ride, Huochebang makes money primarily from selling toll cards, taking a cut from the card top-ups, and helping truckers with financing."

nols··on Deleting the golang subreddit
Even if they effectively delete /r/golang or close it while retaining control so others can't use it, the users will just create another one. I doubt it will have a large impact on the future of golang on Reddit, it will just get rid of years of discussion and make it slightly more difficult to use. You don't want to use Reddit? Cool, don't. There are still millions who do want to use it and some might use that to find information on golang.
nols··on How to start a company with no free time
She's a lot more popular than your average person, and more tied into SV than most. Her resume includes Google, Youtube, Twitter, and Postmates before founding her own company, plus she's got 35K followers on Twitter and had a TechCrunch article written about the startup. I think a lot of what she wrote is applicable but she also moves in spheres the average person doesn't.
nols··on How to start a company with no free time
Then don't. There are only so many hours in the day, this is about fitting as much as possible into them. If you want to take a break during your shower, or go to get coffee with friends every day, that's cool, but there are people with many things going on and they enjoy doing it all. To each their own.

nols··on Y Combinator blacklists founder of Gab.ai
Seems like it, I Googled him to get a better understanding and several prominent links were Breitbart articles about other posts of his that were removed from Twitter and Facebook. Looks like a lot of it is just drumming up support for his completely free speech Twitter clone.
