noindiecred··on Are Plants Farming Us?
For a wonderful scifi novel on this very theme, check out Sue Burke’s excellent Semiosis:

This is amazing, thank you for sharing!

Please read the essay "Don't Mourn For Us" before discussing the possibility of an autism "cure." It's short. Do yourself a favor.

noindiecred··on The worst AI-generated artwork we've seen: Symphony Orchestra's Facebook ad fail
We are in agreement that the image is shitty!
noindiecred··on The worst AI-generated artwork we've seen: Symphony Orchestra's Facebook ad fail
No one is blaming the social media intern. This is a failure straight from the top of the orchestra's business office. The orchestra should have an ad budget allocated for each season, and that ad budget should include photographs of the orchestra on stage. The marketing department can definitely hire a few models - or season ticket holders! - to pose for a few hours for a shoot. Stock photography also exists. These are all solved problems and this is simply poor leadership.

noindiecred··on Healthcare org with over 100 clinics uses GPT-4 to write medical records
> Generative AI models aren't perfect, and often produce errors. Physicians therefore need to verify the AI-generated text. Carbon Health claims 88 percent of the verbiage can be accepted without edits.

So the AI is only wrong 12 percent of the time!

noindiecred··on Apple Vision predictive bio-feedback
Oh so now the hot new thing is a computing device that actively tries to guess its user’s emotional state (using various methods, including introducing new stimuli) and then then CHANGES ITS BEHAVIOR based on the results!

The Free Software people were right - a device this intimate needs to have publicly available, verifiable source code.

As soon as I saw that part of page I thought, "oh shit." All I can think about these days is all the parts of my job that will be automated away by AI, until there's no longer a reason to employ me.
noindiecred··on Generative AI could be an authoritarian breakthrough in brainwashing
Or think about this - prominent critic of the regime? Good luck getting anyone to find you online when there are thousands of AI-generated fake social profiles and personal websites claiming to be yours, all saying things that are vaguely plausible but not in any way substantive.

OP wonders if there’s a version of the Thinkpad keyboard with a metal case. The Tex Kodachi has the Thinkpad layout in an aluminum case, but it’s unfortunately out of stock on the manufacturer’s website:

https://tex.com.tw/collections/keyboard/products/kodachi

The Tex Shinobi isn’t metal, so no help there, but it might have a little more rigidity and still has that Thinkpad layout:

noindiecred··on Pathologies of the attention economy
Oh look, someone else with strange opinions about ADHD! I’m glad that I am able to receive treatment for it - yes, thanks to pharmaceuticals, which the author disdains, but also thanks to evidence-based cognitive behavior therapy and self knowledge. It looks like the author hasn’t done quite enough of the listening to others with ADHD that he pays himself on the back for doing. My symptoms were interfering with my relationship with my spouse and keeping me from being an effective parent to our child. So instead of seeking treatment I should have just… stopped loving capitalism so much?

noindiecred··on Anduril surveillance towers spreading along the US border
The “Flame of the West”? The best hope for the side of light to fight back the hordes of darkness, a.k.a. migrants crossing the border?

But, come on, if they wanted to come up with a LOTR name for an all-seeing eye on top of a tall tower, Barad-dûr is RIGHT THERE.

noindiecred··on US border forces are seizing Americans' phone data and storing it for 15 years
Wow can’t wait until this data is all exfiltrated and sold on the dark web!
noindiecred··on The story of the first “computer bug” is a pile of lies
Mundane observation, but I love reading stories about this era of computing and seeing the history that’s behind all the conventions we take for granted. The “log” was an actual notebook that was manually updated by a human, taking its name from a nautical logbook. The “console” was called that because it was a piece of furniture (a console table) that happened to contain lights that showed the system status. This stuff is fascinating.
noindiecred··on Shell to install 100K charge points in the UK by 2030
I live in the U.S. and initially misread the headline as Shell planning to install charging stations in the UNITED STATES. Of course I was wrong.
noindiecred··on SpaceX reprioritized to cyber defense and overcoming signal jamming
Abso freaking lutely. These statements (so common for him) are way too cryptic and open to so many different interpretations. I guess firing all his PR/comms staff is going well?
noindiecred··on Ukraine will now see ruthless city battles – Russia’s Plan B
Just as a tiny side note here, this is my (U.S. native English speaker) first encounter with the word “lakh,” and it seems an incredibly useful word.

noindiecred··on My work routine: plan, do, learn loops
This is insanely helpful. Since my ADHD diagnosis, I've been trying to find ways to transform my brain's particular liabilities into assets. The strategies here are a good place to start. I'm intrigued by the idea of interstitial journaling - and I would very much like to see the author's teased post about the process. I've been keeping a paper journal for years now and this looks like a way to get more out of it...

Game Boy pocket would be nice to have as well. Especially because it would be interesting to compare it to Gunpei’s original design.
