nocobot··on Costco opening a $440M chicken farm to escape America's chicken monopoly
I'm a low income student (in a first world country so still far from poor) and it is totally doable for me to only buy animal products from ethical sources. It just means I eat a lot less of it. I don't think everyone needs to be able to afford to eat meat every day.
nocobot··on Students Evaluating Teachers Doesn’t Just Hurt Teachers, It Hurts Students
I'm a CS student in Germany and contrary to the authors claim we actually do evaluate teachers (to be fair that might not have been common place when she was teaching).

This is obviously anecdotal but in my experience these ratings seem to reflect my perceived quality of the lectures quite well.

nocobot··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted working on a product?
> Traders cannot make a profit if they don't manipulate the price.

Traders aren't the only reason prices move. Clearly a wide spread crop failure would also increase grain prices. You can still make money as a trader if you do a better job at predicting such events than others.

nocobot··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2018)
The German version of the job posting lists it as a requirement
nocobot··on Whois public database is in breach of GDPR, according to European authorities
In Germany you can choose to not be listed in those, I assume it's the same in the UK .
nocobot··on Leaked email shows how Cambridge Analytica and Facebook first responded in 2015
In high school I was told to make up statistics as needed when writing essays. Anecdotal evidence of course but I suspect that many schools do a bad job at this.

But I suspect the bigger problem is that the amount of research needed to hold an informed opinion is growing exponentially in many fields.

nocobot··on GrayKey iPhone unlocker poses serious security concerns
I don't think this becoming common knowledge would have a noticeable impact on sales.

Few people imagine themselves to ever be in a position where they would want to protect the info on their phones from LE.

nocobot··on Ask HN: What stack you use to build websites?
I don't think it's that important what technology you decide to learn first, largely because learning new languages / tech stacks gets easier as your frame of reference grows.

What I think is important is sticking to one thing until you have a good grasp of it.

nocobot··on Using AI to match human performance in translating news from Chinese to English
https://www.nytimes.com/1989/08/21/opinion/l-good-translatio...

Apparently the translation of the Japanese response to the Allies ultimatum calling for their surrender might have been faulty.

nocobot··on Uber, Lyft Drivers Earning a Median Profit of $3.37 per Hour, Study Says
I'd be interested to see what the median profit would look like after adjusting for COL. My guess would be that most high earning drivers are in areas with high population density (thus also likely to be more expensive) so I'm not sure if the increased hourly rate necessarily implies that they are doing better.
nocobot··on Chinese Bitcoin Mining Company May Have Made as Much Money as Nvidia Last Year
I'd love to see who is buying the miners and what percentage of customers manage to run profitable mining operations. Mining without having access to nearly free energy seems to me to be very dependent on bitcoin increasing in value.
nocobot··on Some Notes About How I Write Haskell
I found the paragraph about iterating with list comprehensions very illuminating. As someone who is just starting to learn Haskell, deciding when not to use map / filter is something where my intuitions regularly seem to be off.
nocobot··on Money Laundering via Author Impersonation on Amazon
Unless I'm missing something this doesn't really seem to launder the money. Sure you have converted bitcoin to cash but the cash still doesn't look like legitimate income if you don't sell the books under your own name (which they clearly don't). So wouldn't it be easier to just sell bitcoin on exchanges like localbitcoin?
nocobot··on Money Laundering via Author Impersonation on Amazon
Gyft appears to me to be a legit business (I only had a short look at their website). Buying gift cards at regular prices and then selling them with a small markup while providing anonymity for your customers seems plausible.
