> I could ask the same, because I haven't found many ardent defenders of cryptocurrency outside the tech circles of the so called developed world.

Not surprising, you live in a media bubble filled with people from the "developed world".

nkuttler··on Binance lays off over 1k Employees
Bitcoin has absolutely nothing to do with web3, so you provided an empty list.
nkuttler··on Binance lays off over 1k Employees
If your country's money and banking works for you I don't think I can explain to you why bitcoin is useful, you simply have no use for it. That your peers primarily use it for speculation says more about them than about bitcoin.
nkuttler··on Binance lays off over 1k Employees
> the BTC network uses a staggering amount of power

Actually, bitcoin uses a ridiculously small amount of power for what it provides. See for example here https://www.lynalden.com/bitcoin-energy/ for an introduction to clear up this misconception.

nkuttler··on Founder of crypto lender Celsius Network arrested, charged with fraud
> So most of the people using it are either bad actors or speculators

"bad actors" according to their government, which could mean people who simply want the right to vote, or to live free from oppression, secret police, etc.

nkuttler··on Mark Zuckerberg: “We’re moving very slowly” (2012)
Opened in Firefox, nothing (presuambly adblock), openened in chrome, HTTP 429. Haha.
nkuttler··on Buying an iPad Pro for coding was a mistake
> Apple marketed the iPad Pro as a replacement for a computer

Nah, they were using an extremely narrow definition of computer, one where you can buy and consume stuff and do "cool" social media with the device. If that's not your use case you want a different kind of computer.

> People do drugs to escape seemingly-insurmountable problem(s) in their life.

Some people

nkuttler··on GCC Adopts a Code of Conduct
> Hi! Reminder: “guys” is an inherently gendered term.

That's not a ping, that's imposing your language on others. A ping would be something like "guys is a gendered term for some people"

nkuttler··on GCC Adopts a Code of Conduct
I witnessed everything, the bullies used the CoC to justify their behavior and told me their committee encouraged their enforcement of the CoC in this way. People on the committee have published articles on the matter calling for such enforcement. Bullying is well defined https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullying, I specifically mean it in the sense of repeated abusive behavior by people with more power.
nkuttler··on GCC Adopts a Code of Conduct
The fact that it was white people bullying people from all over the planet only made it worse.
nkuttler··on GCC Adopts a Code of Conduct
I'm not sure what kind of details you're looking for?
nkuttler··on GCC Adopts a Code of Conduct
Here's a shocking concept: language has context.
nkuttler··on Former US SEC attorney: 'Get out of crypto platforms now'
Dunno, it seems like you started a thread with name calling.
nkuttler··on The Federated App Problem
> A big problem is that you don't actually see content on other instances

What do you mean? On lemmy you simply click "all" and see a feed from all federated sources, on kbin that seems to be the default. When you open threads/posts you see comments from all sources. The other stuff doesn't exist yet as the platform is very new. You can help.

nkuttler··on The note Reddit sent to moderators threatening them if they don’t reopen
I can take your GPL code and never show it to anyone any more, that doesn't violate the license. I also don't have to publish GPL code indefinitely simply because I showed it to you once. Terrible analogy.
nkuttler··on The note Reddit sent to moderators threatening them if they don’t reopen
That sounds like toxic work, any sane person would rather move somewhere else and do something productive, like building a new community, or find an entirely new hobby.
nkuttler··on The note Reddit sent to moderators threatening them if they don’t reopen
> in the hands of someone who openly says they aren't going to use it

Closing it IS using it, in a very public and visible way. They just don't like HOW it is used by the people who built it.

nkuttler··on Reddit is removing moderators that protest by taking their communities private
> reddit sti needs all those people who provide the content people browse for, etc

Seems like they are betting their future on commercial content producers. If you're on /r/all a lot of the content is already reposts, disguised corporate posts, professional reshufflers and karma hoarders, etc.

nkuttler··on The Reddit blackout will continue
> commercial value of Reddit is not in r/AskHistorians, it’s in r/aww and r/earthporn and r/mildlyinteresting

That's incredibly short sighted but probably in line with how reddit execs view things. /r/aww and /r/earthporn are trivial to replicate on any other site, /r/AskHistorians is not. It's the small subs with loyal users that build an environment where the cookie-cutter content aggregators are profitable. Oh well, all for the IPO pump n dump.

nkuttler··on The Reddit blackout will continue
I dislike that I have to make an effort to entertain myself during downtimes, but this is an excellent exercise for a future where reddit execs might just have made the site unusable for me.
nkuttler··on Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella: All-In on AI for Future Success
I could literally google "how to sort a list in brainfuck" and copy and paste a solution right now. I specifically said somebody who doesn't know the language, not somebody who knows nothing.
nkuttler··on Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella: All-In on AI for Future Success
Somebody who knows absolutely nothing about a language can also copy and paste together a working solution. I'd trust that about as much as something ChatGPT spit out.
nkuttler··on Remains of an extinct world of organisms discovered
I'm not sure why you're trying to make a point. HN has a voting system, you could just have provided the "better" quote and be done with it.
nkuttler··on Remains of an extinct world of organisms discovered
> The interesting thing

The interesting thing to you

nkuttler··on Remains of an extinct world of organisms discovered
> Newly discovered biomarker signatures point to a whole range of previously unknown organisms that dominated complex life on Earth about a billion years ago.
nkuttler··on ArchiveTeam has saved over 11.2B Reddit links
That sounds naive. Your contributions were only needed and possible because of the volunteers that built the community you participated in. These mode don't own your posts, you can publish them anywhere you like after the community is gone. If you rely on an unpaid commercial entity to preserve your content forever I have bad news for you.
nkuttler··on The Bitcoin whitepaper is hidden in every copy of macOS
It seems bizarre, she was a model and presumably the photo was created while she was doing her job? The cautionary tale seems to be "don't sell rights to pictures of yourself".
nkuttler··on Bank failures come in waves
My guess is less concentration, debt and leverage in total. We seem to have progressed to a point where the entire system is very unstable and always at risk, and the only tool we seem to have left is creating more debt/money. Our modern fiat money is one of the greatest experiments in human history, and we have no evidence yet that such a system can be stable long term.
nkuttler··on Bank failures come in waves
> I think this crisis is the strongest yet reason to push for CBDCs as only a central bank can fully guarantee a deposit

This makes zero sense. A CBDC doesn't have a stronger "guarantee" than normal central bank money, yet it has all kinds of negatives like total surveillance and control.
