nkristoffersen··on Google removes ‘view image’ button from search results
Which is why they sued. To solve that problem.
nkristoffersen··on Show HN: Takehome.io – Time-limited coding challenges for interviews via Git
Often enough someone will be under real time pressure to solve a task, right?
nkristoffersen··on Flat UI Colors – Color palettes for use in projects, designs, presentations
I love coolors. Just hit space bar to cycle. Once I see a color I like, I just lock that color and continue hitting space bar and locking colors till I have a full pallet :-)

Signal has desktop apps now https://signal.org/download/
nkristoffersen··on No Cutting Corners on the iPhone X
That’s not what happened though. With the older iPhones (with flat cameras), the flash would actually reflect off cases. It happened to me often enough. you can find examples of this in a web search.
nkristoffersen··on Apple in 2017: Report Card
just a point from the other side. I use iCloud and it is quick, cheap, and seamless. $9.99/mo for 2TB is a great deal. And the file/photo/video syncing is painless and automatic.
nkristoffersen··on HomePod arrives February 9, available to order this Friday
Wouldn't the "sirikit" availability start to solve the problem of 3rd party integration?
nkristoffersen··on Fermented Shark, Anyone?
I spent December 23rd with Icelanders. I tried the shark cubes but main event was Skata. Suuuuper potent rotten skate. Easily the worst thing I've ever put in my mouth. It smells so bad you can't prepare it inside. They boil it outside and bring it in to eat. I thought I would need to throw away my jacket the next day as it smelled so bad I would gag.

Third it! Trip mode is great. I tether from my phone a lot and need to protect my data from background usage.
nkristoffersen··on What Spectre and Meltdown Mean for WebKit
Regarding royalties: My understanding from school is that radio royalties are paid out by samplings from radio playlists. If you song was in the sample then you got paid, otherwise, nope!

Don't the current streaming tech pay artists per literal play? If so, wouldn't that mean more money to the artists since all plays are counted?

My understanding is a bit outdated now perhaps, but would like to understand better if someone knows better :-)

nkristoffersen··on iCloud Drive can strip metadata from documents
Not related, but when I adjust chmod for files in iCloud, they revert back (during next sync cycle I presume). Just something that may or may not be interesting for folks looking at iCloud.
nkristoffersen··on The Future of Transmit iOS
As someone who really wants to use my iPad for everything, I really really tried to use coda for development. But it crashes soooo much. It’s sad because the potential is there. The iPad is so powerful but we need apps to utilize it fully.

Also, relatively unrelated, I await Apple to release Bluetooth mouse support. The touch screen ergonomics aren’t good for long perdiods of hackin:-)

nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: Does anyone use an alternative to a password manager?
Which is never, right? Has iCloud actually been “hacked” in the “Yahoo” sense of the word?

I ask because I use iCloud heavily. Nearly 1TB of photos/videos and now use 1Password with iCloud sync.

nkristoffersen··on The iPhone X
I've had the X for a few days now. The animation to press the physical button totally had me stumped the first few times! Overall I'm a fan (such as great camera and great screen) but some of the new interactions are taking some getting used to.
nkristoffersen··on Apple Plans Combined iPhone, iPad and Mac Apps to Create One User Experience
people seem to forget but Apple makes some of the most powerful iOS apps currently. iMovie, Keynote, Photos, Garagaband etc. And the experience between iOS and MacOS is extremely similar between them. Just more “expanded” on desktop. I wouldn’t be surprised if they share a lot of code between the different platforms too. If this helps more developers accomplish the same thing that Apple is doing with their own apps then I’m all for it!
nkristoffersen··on Apple Plans Combined iPhone, iPad and Mac Apps to Create One User Experience
It’s just the UI. Most of the underlying logic code and magic sauce can stay the same I bet.
nkristoffersen··on Apple Plans Combined iPhone, iPad and Mac Apps to Create One User Experience
I’m waiting for Bluetooth mouse support. It’ll be a game changer. Fingers aren’t precise enough for pro tasks and touch isn’t ergonomical for long duration tasks. The mouse as an option will allow the iPad to blossom into a real capable post-pc workhorse that I could use professionally.
nkristoffersen··on Apple Plans Combined iPhone, iPad and Mac Apps to Create One User Experience
For the hard drive, I think you can use the USB dongle to connect a hard drive. But you are right in that the multitasking probably doesn’t allow for multi day upload. Haven’t tried it yet though.
nkristoffersen··on Apple Confirms It Degrades Your Old iPhone
Apple did disable some graphic effects for older phones during one of the big changes. I recall the iPhone 4 didn't blur the backgrounds like newer phones.
nkristoffersen··on iPhone Performance Degrades as Battery Ages
And yet, in this analogy, you can refill/recharge the tank/battery. And if your tank/battery becomes faulty, you can replace the tank/battery. Just like reality :-)
nkristoffersen··on Google Maps' Moat
My understanding is Netflix uses their own CDN for delivery not AWS.
nkristoffersen··on Taking Gatsby for a spin
Gatsby is great. I have a site for a local construction company hosted on S3. The repo is on gitlab and I use the CI/CD of gitlab to handle deployments and tests. The best part, I trained the non-technical folks at the construction company to make edits on gitlab (change pictures, text, etc) and their changes automatically get deployed. Bacially using gitlab as the cms. It’s very smooth, no security issues, and very fast
nkristoffersen··on More Than a Million Pro-Repeal Net Neutrality Comments Were Likely Faked
Data is the same. Bandwidth is the same. Use more bandwidth get charged more. Use more data, get charged more.

Should I be charged differently for using that bandwidth to view facebook instead of your personal blog?

nkristoffersen··on More Than a Million Pro-Repeal Net Neutrality Comments Were Likely Faked
Bandwidth isn't free. You pay for it, I pay for it, Google pays for it, Netflix pays for it, everyone pays for it.

Bandwidth is what we pay for. Net neutrality does not mean we get bandwidth for free. People who use more bandwidth have to buy more bandwidth already.

nkristoffersen··on Ajit Pai and the FCC Want It to Be Legal for Comcast to Block BitTorrent
I thought https initial request had to happen in the clear in order to get the dns resolved? If so, then you can definitely block/throttle https traffic since you know where it is going.
nkristoffersen··on Jekyll Static Web Hosting – Deployment Pipeline on AWS
I just created a website for a friends construction business. Gatsby on S3 with Cloudfront.

New thing for me was using Gitlab CI/CD. I taught the 'customer' how to edit on gitlab website and do merges. Now changes are deployed automagically without needing me to get involved.

Best part, no wordpress databases I need to worry!

nkristoffersen··on Why QR codes are on the rise
The reason I bet on is now Apple made it integrated into the stock Camera app. The QR reader is very clean (as Apple is to do).
nkristoffersen··on Samsung DeX
This might not be the right crowd, but iCloud is really the un-clunky storage accessible from everywhere. It's just so well integrated between the phone, macbook, ipad, web. Worth it. I spend like $9-10 per month for 2TB of storage. with auto sync of my photos (which is where it really shines)
nkristoffersen··on Ask HN: Which load testing tool do you use? Any recommendations?
I like ab as well. Simple and tells me if my app can handle a load. Exactly what I want to know. I do wish it was easier to see what the failed requests looked like though.
nkristoffersen··on Tesla Semi
I would think mechanics are going to become fewer and fewer as less mechanical bits exist on the electric vehicles. Tires, alignment, electrical. Those will be you're bread+butter services.
