We do not employ public servants. The government, which governs with our consent, does. They are paid with our tax money, but we do not employ them.

Working for the government and wielding power over the general public is a privilege and comes with higher expectations than a private employee.

It is, and sometimes you can use those failings to your personal advantage.

I think the introvert vs. extrovert thing has become almost a meme. I would definitely describe myself as “generally introverted” but I still very much enjoy many “extroverted” activities. I get the same sense of satisfaction and enjoyment out of throwing a party for people as the OP described. I will not be the center of attention at my own party, but I still enjoy the act of making other people happy. In fact, most likely what will happen is once everything is running smoothly and people are having fun, you’ll find me out on the back deck where it’s quiet talking to only one or two other people.

“Throwing a party” is not an introvert vs. extrovert thing. What you do at the party is.

The difference is one works for the public on public dollars and the other works for a private entity.

Your mistake is thinking public and private are the same.

How is that related?

I remember lobbies in StarCraft for maps that used some best match algorithm to recreate porn images with map terrain tiles such that the image would appear in the maps mini map. It was quite a lot of work to view a single, tiny image in all the wrong colors.

Sounds like a great deal, but that’s quite a lot of space required to store them, no?
nkrisc··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
I believe that they believe what they are doing is good.
nkrisc··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
I don’t believe them. I don’t believe that they are truly concerned about much beyond their own self interests.
nkrisc··on Lunar Terminator Paradox
There’s no paradox present, just one person’s misunderstanding of the arrangement of celestial bodies in 3D space.

So either they’re full of shit or we need to stop them by any means necessary.
nkrisc··on Promising discoveries about the potential for life on one of Saturn’s icy moons
I’m well aware of why people do it, that doesn’t change my feelings about it or my opinion of it.

Developing the more heinous weapons before the other guy is the pragmatic thing to do, but it doesn’t give you the moral high ground.

> (Point in fact, we know of several governments currently trying to achieve nuclear, aerial, and AI superiority today.)

And why are they doing that? To get it first since others will do it anyway.

nkrisc··on When did Google get so weird?
People have been adding “please” to their search queries for decades now, this is for them.

It’s the same, lame, self-fulfilling excuse that gets used for every bad thing someone does dressed up as a necessary thing.

You can see it right now with AI barreling forward. If we don’t develop it, someone else will, so we will ensuring it happens.

Of course we can never prove or disprove their claim of “someone else will” because they went ahead and did it.

Technology doesn’t make slavery obsolete, it just makes your slaves more efficient.

There had always been abolitionists who were against slavery simply because they thought it was immoral, not because they thought slaves weren’t needed anymore.

nkrisc··on Allow babywearing carriers on planes
Well, yes, unless you’re advocating for the extinction of humans or plan to throw yourself off a cliff the moment you’re a burden on anyone.

Today’s kids are tomorrows doctors, engineers, tradesmen, drivers, etc.

nkrisc··on Allow babywearing carriers on planes
Unless you’re planning to be completely independent up until the moment you die, today’s children will be caring for you in your old age.
nkrisc··on Allow Carriers on Planes
> Where is SO important that you need to take a baby with you on a plane?

I would guess that in most cases, someone is flying with an infant because they are going somewhere important and traveling with their infant was the best option available to them.

Traveling by air (or at all) with an infant is not fun and I can’t imagine that ever being anyone’s first choice.

So when you see frazzled parents at the airport with their young children, assume the best and be kind.

nkrisc··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
They’re not coming here and forcibly injecting people. Maybe we should be asking ourselves why so many are choosing the oblivion offered by drugs similar to and including fentanyl.

The only reason they’re selling it is because people are buying it.

It’s an American problem.

You’re only losing cold air, which has very little mass compared to what you’re actually storing in your fridge. The energy cost to re-chill the air in the unoccupied volume of your fridge can’t be that significant, I’d imagine.

It’s be an interesting experiment to put a temperature probe in something like a block of cheese, let it cool to the ambient fridge temperature, then open the fridge door for a few minutes and see if the temperature of the cheese even measurably changes over the next few hours or whatever amount of time.

nkrisc··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
Which isn’t surprising at all if you turn off your adblocker and look at how these AI chat products are marketed to the general public. They’re presented as all-knowing oracles that can deliver exactly what you want with only the vaguest and briefest of prompts.

nkrisc··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't

Yep. I haven’t seen an actual MD in quite some time. Instead my general care provider is a Nurse Practitioner and he’s been handling all my routine healthcare needs.
