nkkollaw··on Climate change driving entire planet to dangerous 'global tipping point‘
I think part of the reason why China pollutes and in general has awful business practices is because their regulation are not in line with ours.

If they were—and if they didn't steal IP from Western companies—their products would be as expensive as ours.

Lastly, you could very well be one of those "dedicated group of "people/bots/etc"." that you're talking about. I see plenty of weird comments defending China here on HN whenever it's mentioned.

nkkollaw··on Climate change driving entire planet to dangerous 'global tipping point‘
Yes, that's why I don't buy anything made in China (unless I have to).
nkkollaw··on Climate change driving entire planet to dangerous 'global tipping point‘
China is the biggest pollutant by far: over twice as much CO2 as the USA, and of course they've been poisoning everything with toxic waste for decades.

Why can't governments stop all Chinese imports until the get in line, instead of banning plastic straws?

That's the real question no one asks.

nkkollaw··on Ask HN: What is your financial “setup”?
I have 6 accounts:

A for income, ex. when I get a check I put 80% here

B taxes, when I get a check I put 20% here (taxes in Poland are 18%)

then:

C for business expenses, I know how much I spend each month, and I wire that amount each month from A

D personal account - whatever is left in A after business expenses, I wire here

Finally:

E, joint account with my partner, I know how much we spend each month and I wire that from D -> E

F, saving account for myself. Whatever is left in D at the end of the month, I put here

ING lets me manage all these accounts from their app, and wire money instantly from one to the other. All these accounts cost about $2/mo. each, but if there's enough action (ex., if you spend at least $500/mo.) the price drops to 0.

This setup is useful to not go splurge every time you get paid.

nkkollaw··on Santa hat removed from VS Code after complaint
I don't know what's more pathetic—that somebody will go out of his way because of a santa hat, or that the project actually removed the hat.

What a clown world we live in!

nkkollaw··on A CT scan costs $1,100 in the US – and $140 in Holland
Next on Vox: "Magic mushrooms are illegal in the US — but they're legal in Holland".
nkkollaw··on America After Climate Change, Mapped
Seems like the Green New Deal (since they mention it in the article) is more about socialism than not the environment..?

I'm wondering why people are still using that term.

nkkollaw··on Google Now Bans Some Linux Web Browsers from Their Services
Sure, there are plenty of users that still use Windows XP, but I guess it doesn't make financial sense to support them.

The article has a click-baity headline that makes it seem like evil Google is banning users on Linux, while reality is pretty different.

That was my point.

nkkollaw··on Google Now Bans Some Linux Web Browsers from Their Services
Don't most Linux users use Chrome and Firefox..?
nkkollaw··on NASA's Treasure Map for Water Ice on Mars
Publications (Engadget in this case) keep leaving details out in the the headline to make it more click-bait, and the result is that there are at least 10 articles/month claiming that "NASA just found water/ice on Mars!!!".
nkkollaw··on Twitter funding a team to develop an open standard for social media
Great, another standard for social media!
nkkollaw··on From SaaS idea validation in 1 day to 150+ Beta signups
I find it extremely annoying.
nkkollaw··on What are your options for cognitive enhancement?
Processed carbs make you sleepy, right..?
nkkollaw··on What are your options for cognitive enhancement?
Get enough sleep (most important I guess), don't do drunks nor drink alcohol.

I'm only good at _giving_ advice, but I don't think there's any secret besides those things..?

nkkollaw··on Ask HN: What are some examples of well-designed personal sites?
Mine is pretty minimalistic, haven't updated it in a few years but people like it: http://www.nbrogi.com/
nkkollaw··on Elementary OS 5.1 Hera
It is:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:elementary-os/stable && sudo apt install elementary-desktop

Then, select elementary when you log in.

nkkollaw··on Dating While Dying
I don't think they add those one by one...
nkkollaw··on Elon Musk 'pedo guy' defamation trial to begin
You can't even write the insult you're talking about, how can you compare with "pedo guy", who no one has a problem writing anywhere?

Obviously they're a bad comparison.

nkkollaw··on Elon Musk 'pedo guy' defamation trial to begin
What's the insult you're referring to? Can you write it here..?

Cool, then you can see that they're not comparable.

nkkollaw··on Elon Musk 'pedo guy' defamation trial to begin
“Pedo guy was a common insult used in South Africa when I was growing up,” Mr Musk said in a court filing as part of a failed request to have the case thrown out of court. "It is synonymous with ‘creepy old man’ and is used to insult a person’s appearance and demeanour, not accuse a person of paedophilia.”
nkkollaw··on Facebook adds corrective label on user's post under new Singapore fake news law
Wikipedia publishes a lot of incorrect information.

The fact that you can source a piece of information doesn't make it true.

nkkollaw··on Google AdWords charged me for clicks in Istanbul while location-targeting the US
So, there are no techniques that work consistently.
nkkollaw··on Ask HN: What are you thankful for?
Me too.
nkkollaw··on What Happens if SAT Scores Consider Adversity?
Why don't they though? I'm in Europe and school is free.

I also went to college in New Orleans, and my classmates got $700/mo. from the government if they stayed in school (no idea how, though).

nkkollaw··on What Happens if SAT Scores Consider Adversity?
Is adversity always bad? Many times adversity creates more motivated people. That's why so many successful companies are created by smart immigrants, and many times spoiled rich kids do drugs and end up losing all the money they inherit.

Regardless, when we stop looking at merit to judge people's work, we get into a very dangerous territory.

Identity politics is cancer.

nkkollaw··on Excite CEO: Why Excite didn't buy Google (2014) [audio]
I love it. When you visit Excite, there's a message saying they're redesigning their site: http://www.excite.com/.

When do you ever need to do that, rather than doing the redesign and then publishing it whenever it's ready..?

nkkollaw··on Greensboro Man Creates Dating App Where He's the Only Guy Allowed
OK, sorry about that.
nkkollaw··on Greensboro Man Creates Dating App Where He's the Only Guy Allowed
Dating is so much easier under socialism... I agree with you.
nkkollaw··on Bye Bye Microsoft Office, Hello LibreOffice
Gimp and LibreOffice are usable?

Fonts are so broken on Linux—which is the platform that would need this the most—that you can barely select dropdown options if you're on a hidpi monitor.

nkkollaw··on Bye Bye Microsoft Office, Hello LibreOffice
I don't understand why people keep comparing LibreOffice to Microsoft Office, or—God forbid—GIMP with Photoshop.

Sure, my mom will have a great time writing recipes on it and will save $10/mo., but can anyone do any real work that you'd do in Excel? Let's be realistic.

Also, does no one care about design? LibreOffice's interface looks awful on all platforms, and stuck in the 90s. Same with GIMP.
