I've been wishing for years that this would become available on Kindle. My commute wouldn't allow me to easily lug around such a tome, so I have yet to read it despite its obvious quality. I don't understand why a book publisher would hold out on an ebook version yet have an audiobook available...

I live in a 300sf studio in a tenement building built in 1917. There's a single overhead glass dome fixture for each room, but with 10ft ceilings they don't shed much light at all. I've added several hue lamps around aimed at the walls so there's plenty of light (I've also added some under-counter ikea halogen lights on a tp-link smart plug). If I had added these bulbs as regular bulbs, I would have to go around turning on/off each bulb every time I wanted the lights on/off. Instead, I can say one command to my google home (picture: walking into the apartment with hands full of groceries -- "ok google lights on" - done) or tap a button on my phone. I've also set up a cron script on a spare raspberry pi to change the color temperature when the sun sets (like flux but for the apartment lights), which helps with sleep cycle and eye strain. By this point, all but one of the dim overhead lights has burned out (I'm responsible for changing bulbs per my lease, but also since I'm living in a small apartment I don't have room for a 10ft ladder, so it's always a hassle to replace them) and I just don't use the wall switches at all.

Is this a major life improvement? Nah, not really. But having lived here for almost a decade, I can say that I like having a reasonable level of light, and the convenience that comes with the smart lights makes that less of a pain. Not like my lease would let me put in more outlets or light switches (the whole apartment is on a single 15A slow-blow fuse circuit).

But thanks for the _order_ to stop buying smart bulbs. Not like anyone has slightly different use cases for these things than the "_horrible_" replace-a-light-already-on-a-switch case that you demonize.

I used to get something like this, except I described it more like a "burning" behind my eyes. My optometrist recommended reading glasses for computer use. During the day, I wear glasses for nearsightedness, and it turns out that using those while working on a computer was causing a lot of eye strain. I found that reading glasses are actually pretty great -- they force your eyes to focus at a very close range, letting your eyes relax. Since I started wearing them, the burning has gone away. Perhaps you could try something similar.

There's a lot of talk in New England about switching to Atlantic Time, which would effectively give us "permanent DST".

not saying the parent poster's solution would 100% work, but as an anecdote:

I live in Boston. It snows here and I do often buy more than one bag of groceries at a time. Fortunately, I just walk two blocks down the street and go into one of the two grocery stores that are right there.

Compare where I grew up in southern NH: it snows there, too, but the nearest grocery store was a 20 minute drive, so of course I would drive there. Rural NH is not a city, though.

Someone recently mentioned horses as a good analogy. Cars replaced horses; now horses are mostly not allowed on roads, and most people do not own horses. However, horse enthusiasts are still able to own horses and ride them, albeit in certain areas. As someone who enjoys driving, I can definitely see this same sort of thing happening with cars. Fortunately, it gives me hope that manually-driven cars won't become completely extinct.

If the "its" is referring to the quotes, it should be "their significance".

If you find this sort of thing interesting, it might be fun to mess around with designing your own engine in Automation[1]. I've always been interested in cars, but playing around in this (currently in-development) simulation/game gave me a bunch of new insight into various engine parameters.

At a former job of mine, we used to have "Formal Friday." Soon enough, some started to attend "Flannel Friday" instead and it became quite the office-dividing phenomenon. Regardless, it can be quite fun and effective to have informally-defined clothing days. Gives people a nice chance too try out new pieces and styles.
